CHARITy BIKERIDERSTen enthusiastic cyclists from the Boys of Elm Road Cycling Society (BERCS) recently completed the Coast-to-Coast cycle ride in aid of the MacMillan Nurses and Lupus Charities.
They have so far raised a staggering £4170. There is still a little sponsor money to obtain, however, so they are encouraging anyone who sponsored the lads to get their money in now.
"We were intending to write a report of their intrepid journey but feel that the poem, by Neil Franklin, sums up the adventure in the best possible way," said a spokesperson for the Cycling Society.
"CoAsT To CoAsT"On a grey and misty morning,as we shuffled off the bus,we wondered what the day would bring? What would become of us?Would we reach our destination?Would we all be safe and well?Would we all be laughing on Hartside top?Or swearing 'effin hell?'
Well we rode on out of Whitehaven, We conquered Whinlatter Pass,Rode screaming into Keswick,Bad weather on our back. From Keswick into Greystoke,We didn’t make a fuss, When big black clouds released their load And spewed their rain on us!
Now Greystoke and past Penrith, We thought we saw the sun, Our pounding hearts were lifted,We dared to think we’d won !But suddenly the clouds
returned, They gathered up on mass And peeking out amongst them There gloated Hartside Pass.
Now we knew we had it coming, We even raised a smile When the sign said at the bottom Winding bends and for five mile!So we rode up to the summitAnd all at once we saw,Through rain as thick as Guiness, The tea room’s open door! With drink and vittles taken in
Next morning full of breakfast,
To Alston then we sped, We found Lowbyer Manor And put our bikes to bed! We walked then into Alston,For food and drink that night,Returning to our digs for sleepAnd wait the coming light
We started on our way,Four hellish climbs to Rookhope, Was the price we had to pay! With nasty biting beasties, Nipping at our skin, We sweltered up them hellish hills And reached the Rookhope Inn.
Now one last climb before us Was the last we’d see that day,A lethal bit of suicide track That meets the Waskerley Way Now forty miles of downhill Stretched out before our eyes And all our pain had been replaced With warming joyous sighs.
Our adventure now had ended, We shook hands and made a toast To our weary aching bodies We’d survived the Coast to Coast !!!
DEFENDANT FEARS FOR SAFETy
James Allan Robson, of no fixed abode, had his case adjourned until August 19th in order that his co-accused would also appear with him when facing a charge of burglary at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. The 20 year-old is charged jointly with Paul Bake, of entering a house in Queensway, on March 26th. A Playstation 2 console, eight
playstation games, two mobile phones, house key, car key, twelve cans of lager and £6 in cash were stolen. Robson expressed concern for his safety and spoke of Bake chasing him in the Cockton Hill area of Bishop Auckland. The defendant was informed that this was not a matter for the court and that he should inform the police.
CHAOTIC LIFE CAUSES PROBLEMS
Kimberley Baxter’s life was described by the Probation Service as “chaotic”, and plagued by alcohol problems, when she appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates recently. The 26 year-old, of High Northgate, Darlington, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of destroying a double glazed window to the value of £140 in a house rented by her ex-partner in Shildon. The court heard how the defendant had spent the night at the house of Cornelius John McGlade Petrie and had demanded more drink the next
morning. Mr Petrie had asked her to leave and eventually threw her out, which was when Miss Baxter threw a vodka bottle at the window. Baxter, who has a string of previous convictions for affray, violence and criminal damage, produced a letter from Mr Petrie, which detailed some payments she had made to restore the damage. She was ordered to pay the rest of compensation to Mr Petrie and was handed a six month extension to the community order which she is currently serving.

Durham County Council, in partnership with WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme), has trained an army of green volunteers who will now act as community based waste reduction experts. The 14 members of the public have all been trained to ‘Master Composter’ status and are now busy on the front line helping communities reduce
the amount of household waste they bin. Their advice is all free as part of the overall campaign target of recycling and composting at least 40% of household waste by 2010.Vicki Burrell, Projects and Waste Reduction Team Leader, says the volunteers have a really important role to play. “This is a fantastic initiative - by training volunteers to help

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor,The B.E.R.C.S. would like to thank everyone who kindly sponsored their bike ride in June. All sponsor money is nearly in and we have reached at present a massive £4170, which will be Split 50 / 50 to the MacMillan Nurses and Lupus Society when we know the final figure. We intend to present the two cheques in two weeks time, subject to all involved being available for a photo shoot. The ride was a tremendous achievement for most, considering eight people didn’t
even have a bike when it was suggested. And probably not even been on one for 20 years or more. It has been hinted that this may continue with a ride next year. Once again, many thanks for all who gave their support and help and made that vital donation towards two wonderful charities. If anyone would still like to donate they can, before Friday 21st, to the Crier’s office or Elm Road Club for the attention of Brian Burn or the B.E.R.C.S.
Brian Burn,B.E.R.C.S.
Dear Editor,I would like to gave my sincere thanks to everyone who sponsored me for my shave and hair cut on behalf of young Chloe Clark. I have been inundated with praise, but I feel all the thanks should go to the ladies that started this amazing fund raising campaign, these are

Victoria Nelson, Lesley Tremble, Wendy Lambert, Colette Little and Emma Raine. They have worked very hard behind the scenes and, I for one, admire their hard work and determination. Thank you to them all.
Cllr Gareth Howe,Mayor of Shildon.
Councillor Gareth Howe believes the praise he has received for his charitable efforts should be directed to the ladies who
began the campaign.....Before leaving for their summer break, year 5 children at Timothy Hackworth Primary School had been studying World War Two.
The enthusiastic youngsters then decided that their end of term party should be a VE Day celebration. The boys and girls dressed

HORSE GALLOP OUTOF THE BLOCKS
Grey Horse began the new season away to Darlington Croft, after promotion to Division two, and got off to a great start with a 1 – 2 win. Manager, Martin Joyce, had a pleasant problem to solve, with the amount of players available for the game, some having to miss out on the 16 selected. Starting with a 4-5-1 formation, Horse began well, passing the ball around and creating chances from play through midfield and both flanks. Jeff Dixon and Russell Mercer were playing well, with attacking play down the wings and, eventually, new signing John Myers put the away team 1-0 up with twenty minutes played.
Sub, Harry Thomson, went close with a header that just flew the wrong side of the upright, to leave the half time score 0 – 1. After looking fairly comfortable in the first half, tiredness began to take effect in the sunny conditions and Croft began to look dangerous, breaking from midfield in the second half. They were rewarded with a goal midway through the half; a shot from the edge of the box beating goalkeeper, Stuart Timmiss’ attempt to save.Shaun Moore went on a mazy run from the full back position, and should have gone for goal instead of wasting the chance with a misplaced pass.Horse needed to convert their forward play and, with 10
minutes left, a pin point pass from Myers reached Darren Foster, who shot the ball into the net and sealed the win. Horse played well in patches, but need to provide better quality of final pass if they are to consolidate their good ball possession. The title of Man-of-the-match was given to defender Mel Douglas, who stood strong when Croft were attacking in numbers. Please note, due to the Fun Day in Hackworth Park, the Grey Horse's Home Cup Game against Sunderland Vain Arms will be played at Jubilee Fields. Players and fans are asked to meet at Grey Horse Car park for 9.45am or go directly to field.
RAILWAyMEN CAN PLAy BETTER!
Shildon AFC's season started last Saturday, with a draw against a hard working, but very direct, Billingham Synthonia side. The Railwaymen took the lead through a great Sam Garvie shot, before once again conceding a poor goal, which seemed set to stop Shildon in their tracks. Prior to the Synthonia goal, Shildon had looked comfortable and in control, with Warren Byrne, in particular, causing problems. Shildon may even have felt that they could have had a couple of penalties. Synthonia scored their second goal with only their second attack of the game and, with Byrne having to come off injured at half time, Shildon were certainly up against it. The desire to not lose the opening game was massive, and Shildon got a deserved equaliser. Sinners pressed Shildon all over the park. At the same time,
the game certainly became stretched, as players tired in the heat and pace of it. It was at this point that Shildon missed Byrne most. The management at Shildon AFC told the players in a meeting on the previous Wednesday that the game would be a high tempo affair, which would be decided by the team that made the least defensive mistakes and took their chances when they came along. On a positive note, Shildon showed great attitude and commitment.Tinkler and Walklate had solid games in midfield, dominating the second ball. Before his injury, Warren Byrne was causing Synthonia lots of problems. However, Shildon will be keen to ensure that they deliver more quality in the final third, as well as seeking to stop conceding soft goals.
