To the ATCA membersI would like to start by apolo-

gizing for the late arrival of the Jan/Feb issue of Double Clutch. The publisher has promised us to not let it happen again. The Holi-day season, heavy mailings and vacation scheduling seems to be the cause of the two to three week delivery delay.

The ATCA Board of Directors meeting on March 16th will be focusing on the final prepa-rations for the 40th Annual National meet at Macungie Me-morial Park on Father’s Day weekend, June 14-15, 2019. If you are planning on bringing trucks to show, please try to preregister before June 1, 2019. Preregistration reduces the congestion at the front gate, cuts down on traffic issues on Rt. 100, and allows our parking staff to speed up parking on the show field.

Due to the generous continuing support of our corpo-rate and private member sponsors, our dues and fees should be able to stay at the current rates for several more years. If our current sponsors would like to continue their sup-port, or if anyone else would like to join our sponsor roster, please contact Andrea at the office.

I thank you in advance for your help in defraying our costs, allowing us to keep this great family oriented orga-nization affordable for all who wish to participate in this great hobby.

Hope to see you at Macungie,

Fred Chase

John Walsh Preserves His Late Father's TruckStory by Michael PettiPhotos by Jim Haklar

What struck me about the 1964 International DCO405/Emeryville that John Walsh brought to the 39th ATCA National Show was the plaque on the rig dedicated to the memory of his father. It reads: “In Loving Memory of My Dad… My Best Friend 1944-2011.”

At many ATCA get-togethers, one can see the bond that a father and a son or a daughter have for one another. When a father passes away, the son or daughter continues to care for the father’s truck.

John’s father, also called John, who preferred to be called Jack, passed away of a heart attack while on vacation in Myrtle Beach. He was a self-employed truck driver who owned and operated J & L Trucking. The company’s initials stood for Jack and his wife Lillian.

John explained: “My dad purchased this truck from Marshalls Moving Service in the late 80’s, and the moving company is located in my hometown of Hawthorne, New Jersey. My dad was a life long truck driver, and always loved the Emeryville International. He bought this truck to have as a toy that could also work if needed, and dad put her to work quite regularly.

She never complained, and always got the job done.”John’s father’s truck has a naturally aspirated

220 Cummins generating 220-horsepower. It has a 10-speed transmission, single axle, and Dayton wheels.

John stated: “ The truck is mostly in original condition other than a repaint in the 70’s and has a unique interior installed by St. Louis Interiors in the 70’s. The story told to me was that there was a little interior shop behind a truck stop in St. Louis, and they had all the patterns of all the trucks of that era, and they could be installed rather quickly. This one has a brown button tuck style.”

In addition to ATCA sons and daughters keeping their late father’s truck, there is an issue of where to keep the rigs. Unfortunately, many neighbors do not want a tractor’s intrinsic noise and presence. They look down on a rig as if it is going to drive their property value down. Thus, praise has to be given to sons and daughters who are able to store the big rigs someplace.

John concluded: “This truck was my dad’s baby, and she is in my care since his passing in 2011. I’m proud to be her caretaker now, and she will be with me forever. I hope to restore her to a Johnson Motor Lines tractor, as that was my dad’s plans for her.”
