Descriptive Writing

What is descriptive writing?

• Read this sentence: The boy ate the cake. • Now read this sentence: The hungry boy ate the last slice of

cake before anyone could stop him. • Which of these sentences did you prefer? Did you pick the second sentence? If you did, it is most likely because it helped to make a picture in your mind of the boy. The second sentence

is an example of descriptive writing. *Remember to use words that make a picture in the reader’s mind. Use all 5 senses. 1. What does it look like? 2. What does it sound like? 3. Does it have a smell? 4. Does it have a taste? 5. What does it feel like? Fill in words to describe (a) popcorn and (b) chocolate

Let’s Write a Poem

Poems can be short or long. Some poems have words that rhyme

and some poems don’t. Poems use adjectives and are often descriptive.

like to change some words. • Once you have made any changes, read your poem to someone else

and listen to their feedback. • Underline any spellings you are unsure of and check them with an

adult or a dictionary. • When you are happy with your poem write it on a sheet of paper

using your best handwriting and hang it up somewhere so that the other people in your home can enjoy reading it too.

Art

Make a Bird Feeder

Materials needed:

• Clean and dry recycled milk/juice carton • White paint • Cardboard (for the roof) • Glue • Paintbrush • Paper squares (in assorted colours) • Twine • Wooden spoon

Method:

1. Paint the carton white to colour the lettering (or cover it with paper) 2. Once the paint has dried, glue the coloured paper squares along the

sides of the carton. 3. Allow it to dry. 4. To make the roof: cut out a rectangle from the cardboard. Make sure

it is big enough for the roof. Fold it in half, width wise. Decorate it with coloured squares and allow it to dry.

5. Carefully cut out a rectangular opening in one side of the carton. This will be the door.

6. Ask an adult to cut out 2 small slits in an x shape about 3cm below the door.

7. Put the handle of the wooden spoon through the slits to make a perch for the birds. (Tip: if you put some glue on the end of the handle, it will keep it secure.)

Page 12: Johnstown GNS · the things that interest you. Do your best and keep up the great work girls! Best wishes, Ms Phelan & Ms. Mooney . ... feeling, tasting, hearing and smelling what

8. Ask an adult to make 2 small holes in the roof. Thread the twine through the holes and tie a knot.

9. Glue the roof to the carton. 10. Fill the bottom of the carton with bird seeds. Hang the feeder from a

tree and wait for the birds to discover it. **You might like to design your own bird feeder – go ahead, but don’t forget to ask an adult for some help with the cutting. Remember to send a photo to Ms. Mooney and Ms. Phelan. We would love to see your creations!!

The Butterfly Bush

Read about the butterfly bush and fill in the fact file.

We can make habitats by planting trees and special shrubs that butterflies, birds and bees love. One of the shrubs we can plant is called the Butterfly Bush or Buddleia (bud lee ah). This shrub grows to about 5 metres high and can have purple, blue, red, pink or white flowers. It sows its seeds easily, so you may see it growing on waste ground and on building sites. Its flowers can be up to 25 centimetres long, making it easier for hungry butterflies to spot them. The flowers smell like honey and are full of nectar. Nectar is the butterfly’s main food. The flowers bloom from June until October, so there is plenty of time for the butterflies to drink the sweet nectar. Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell butterflies love the Butterfly Bush.

Where Does Light Come From?

When something gets very hot, it usually sends out light. Campfires and bonfires give us heat but they also give us light. The sun gives us most of our heat and light. We need the sun for us to live on Earth but it can also be harmful. The sun is so bright that it will damage your eyes if you look straight at it. Too much light from the sun can hurt your skin and give you sunburn.

Ten hot sun facts

1. The sun is a star. 6. Light from the sun makes plants and animals grow.

2. The sun is a sphere. 7. The sun is much bigger than Earth.

3. The sun is very, very hot. 8. Earth travels round the sun. 4. The sun gives us heat and

light. 9. The sun is not solid. (like a

rock) It is made of lots of different hot gases.

5. Light from the sun takes 8 minutes to reach Earth.

10.The sun holds Earth in place. It stops it from floating away into space.

The Women at the Tomb (From Grow in Love Teacher Manual)

Jesus had many followers. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and another woman called Salome. These women wanted to take care of the body of their friend Jesus, when it was taken down from the cross but they couldn’t. So, they decided they would come and finish their work another day. That’s why, very early on Sunday morning, they got up and went to the tomb where Jesus’ body had been laid. They brought special oils, ointment and creams with them for the body.

On the way there, the women said to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ It was a very big stone, and the women knew that they would need help to move it. But, when the women arrived at the tomb, they could hardly believe their eyes. The big stone that was placed at the entrance had already been rolled back! The women hurried inside the tomb, and they saw a young man sitting there wearing a white robe, but there was no sign of Jesus. The women were very upset. They didn’t know where Jesus’ body was, or who had taken it.

‘Don’t be upset’ the young man said. ‘I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here – he has been raised! Look, here is the place where he was buried.’ The women could hardly believe what they were hearing. The man continued speaking. ‘Now go and give this message to the apostles and Jesus’ other followers, including Peter. “Jesus is going to meet you near the Sea of Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you.”

When the young man had finished speaking, the women left the tomb, but they were still very upset and scared so they didn’t tell anyone what they had seen.

Jesus Promises to his Friends (From Grow in Love Teacher Manual)

When Jesus told his disciples that he was going back to heaven, to be with God the Father, they were not just very lonely but they were also quite frightened. But Jesus promised them that he would now be with them in a very special way. He would be nearer to them, but he also would be with everyone in the whole world “I am with you always,” he said “to the end of time.”

Jesus asked his disciples to keep doing his work. He wanted them to tell people all around the world about God the Father, and about all the good he had done. Jesus knew that this was a big job for his friends to do but he made a special promise. He said to his friends, “I will ask the Father and he will give you another helper, who will stay with you forever. This helper is called the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will help you to continue spreading the Good News to all people.” Then Jesus went back to the Father.

Jesus’ disciples knew that what he said was true. They knew that even though he was going back to the Father, he was still with them, although now in a different way. They couldn’t see him anymore or hear his voice, or touch him. But they knew that he was even closer to them than before. Because he was alive in a new way, they called him new names like ‘Christ’ and ‘Lord Jesus’. The disciples knew that Jesus’ promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit would come true, so they returned to Jerusalem to wait.
