White supremacists dramatically stepped up their propaganda efforts targeting neighborhoods and campuses in 2018, according to ADL’s Center on Extremism. Colorado ranked third in the U.S.,

behind California and Texas, for the highest number of propaganda distributions. Recently released data from ADL shows white supremacists’ propaganda efforts increased 182 percent, with 1,187 distributions across the U.S. in 2018, up from 421 total incidents reported in 2017. ADL tracked at least 72 propaganda distributions in Colorado in 2018, including distributions on 13 college campuses across the state. There were at least 16 propaganda distributions in Wyoming, according to the report. There were no reported incidents in New Mexico in 2018.

“Posting fliers is a tried-and-true tactic for hate groups that allows them to spread hateful ideas and stoke fear and alarm in a community,” said ADL Mountain States Regional Director Scott Levin. “The increased activity of white supremacists in the region is alarming and disturbing as their hateful messages are often weaponized to target particular groups of people on college campuses and in our community.” The number of racist rallies and demonstrations also rose nationwide last year, although on a more modest scale. At least 91 white supremacist rallies or other public events attended by white supremacists were held in 2018, up from 76 the previous year, with hate groups in-creasingly employing “flash mob” tactics to avoid advance publicity and scrutiny. ADL monitored three events in Colorado, including a gathering of more than 35 individuals associated with Identity Evropa on Nov. 10, 2018 at Eldorado Canyon State Park and again on Nov. 11, 2018 in Denver’s Civic Center Park behind a banner stating, “Defend the Rockies/End Immigration.” ADL’s Center on Extremism has gathered the 2018 data on ADL’s H.E.A.T. Map, an interactive online tool that allows users to geographically chart white supremacist incidents and events nationally and regionally. The propaganda included everything from veiled white supremacist language to explicitly racist images and words, often featured a recruitment element, and frequently targeted minority groups, including Jews, Blacks, Muslims, immigrants and the LGBTQ community. l

ADL’s 2019 Civil Rights Awards Reception on February 20 honored community leaders and tireless civil rights advocates Hans Meyer, Qusair Mohamedbhai

and Judy and Dennis Shepard. The reception was attended by over 250 guests and took place at the Chambers Grant Salon at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver. The winners of ADL’s Summer Associate Research Program — David Fox and Matt McKissick from Brownstein, Hyatt, Farber & Schreck and Rachael Collins and Francis Mascarenhas from Hogan Lovells — were also recognized. This year’s event co-chairs were John Chanin, Jordan Linkow, Sacha Millstone and Adam Ross. Governor Jared Polis joined the gathering to congratulate the honorees and reflect on the changes in Colorado and US society that enabled him to attain the highest office in the state. ADL Regional Director Scott Levin shared Dr. Martin Luther King’s reminder that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Levin noted that these are challenging times and it is necessary for all of us, working together, to lean into the arc and push as hard as we can to ensure it does bend towards justice. Words to Action empowers students to stand up to anti-Semitism

In 2018, a record 800 students participated in ADL’s Words to Action program throughout the Mountain States Region, including Colorado, New Mexico and

Wyoming. The program equips students with constructive and effective responses to stand up to anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias in high schools, on college campuses, at summer camps and more. This year, participants in several programs, including at BBYO’s International Convention held in February at the Colorado Convention Center, were trained in skills to respond to anti-Semitism and hate in a variety of settings. A new generous grant from Rose Community Foundation will also support a longitudinal study and the creation of a Words to Action internship at ADL. Words to Action is also supported by the Norton Bain Family Foundation, the Zeff Kesher Foundation and other donors. ADL’s Mountain States Region will host its 38th Annual Governor’s Holocaust Remembrance Program from 6-7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 2 at

Temple Emanuel, 51 Grape St. in Denver. The program is one of the largest in the United States and allows Coloradans of all faiths to come together to honor Holocaust survivors, remember those who perished, educate the community about this horrible crime against humanity and translate those lessons into contemporary action. Free tickets are available at support.adl.org/ghrp2019 or by calling 303-830-2425. The 2019 program features Holocaust Survivor Gene Klein and his daughter, Dr. Jill Klein. In 1944 at the age of 16, Gene and his family were deported from their home in Hungary to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. With an abundance of luck, a resilient mindset, and a powerful will to live, Gene managed to survive until his liberation by Soviet soldiers at the end of World War II. Gene’s story is captured in We Got the Water: Tracing My Family’s Path through Auschwitz, written by his daughter Jill. Gene is a frequent media contributor as an expert on resilience and a witness to the Holocaust. Jill is a professor, dividing her time between Melbourne Business School and Melbourne Medical School in Australia.The program includes a memorial ceremony and has traditionally featured a special Message to Colorado from the Governor. Winners of ADL’s “A Tribute to Moral Courage” student essay contest will also be recognized. ADL NextGen 360 is a group of young professionals that provides unique programming, educational resources and volunteer opportunities for alumni of

ADL’s Robert B. Sturm Mountain States Leadership Fellows Program. The program encourages next-step ADL involvement, inspires community engagement, promotes civil rights advocacy and galvanizes life-long supporters of ADL and its mission. The 2019 program year kicked off with an engaging cross-religious dialogue with members of the Jewish, Islamic, and Sikh communities, together with the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado. The group learned how each faith works to address social justice issues in our community. Upcoming events include “An Evening with Planned Parenthood: A Look at the Future of Reproductive Rights” in April, and a June event in conjunction with Pride Weekend that will have an LGBTQ focus. Annual membership includes two tickets to each NextGen 360 event and one ticket to ADL’s Torch of Liberty dinner in November. ADL Advocates in State Legislatures The ADL Mountain States Region engaged in important

policy issues during the Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming legislative sessions. ADL advocated on issues to protect religious freedom, women’s access to reproductive health care, voting rights and equality for LGBTQ individuals. In addition, ADL offered testimony on a proposed bill in New Mexico that would have modified the state’s hate crime law to add protection for homeless individuals. In order to maintain the integrity of law, ADL offered an alternative approach to protect the homeless. New Mexico lawmakers tabled the bill to explore the most effective approach. ADL also monitored a failed anti-discrimination bill in Wyoming that would have protected LGBTQ individuals against workplace discrimination. l

ADL sent two

senior officials from the New Mexico State Police to ADL’s Advanced Training School (ATS) in 2018. ATS is a three-day course for law enforcement executives and commanders on domestic and international extremist and terrorist threats. The training provides senior level law enforcement with the latest in expertise, information and resources to help them combat extrem-ist-related threats. l


Message from the Chair and the Director

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards

justice.” As the progeny of Jewish immigrants, we — like so many others — have benefitted from that arc. Our country has gone from slavery to electing an African American President. Women originally had no right to vote; two years ago, one ran for the highest office and women have been elected to Congress and legislatures across the country in unprecedented numbers. And, while the road from Stonewall has been long, the Supreme Court has ruled that two people have the right to marry irrespective of their gender. While many have benefited, many more still struggle for justice. It was the policy of our federal government to dissuade immigration by outrageously separating children from their parents. Jews, Muslims, Blacks, Sikhs and others have been killed in their synagogues, mosques, temples and churches for no other reason than being the “other.” Women were empowered to create the #MeToo movement, but the fact remains it was in response to years of sexism and the inexcusable conduct of men. While LGBTQ individuals may marry, we have had to fight legislation introduced to provide a license for businesses to discriminate. ADL’s mission for over 100 years has been to not only stop anti-Semitism, but also to secure justice and fair treatment to all. We know that in order to do so, it will take all of us, working together, to lean in and push that arc of the moral universe toward justice. We welcome you joining us in that struggle. l

ADL’s No Place for Hate® 2018-2019 Student Art Contest winners display their creativity for a stronger world

ADL will announce the winners of its No Place for Hate® Student Art Contest at its No Place

for Hate Celebration Breakfast on April 12, 2019 (for tickets, visit www.adl.org/celebrate2019). The visual arts contest was open to students in participating No Place for Hate schools throughout the Mountain States Region. The contest provided an opportunity for elementary, middle and high school students to submit original artwork to convey their vision of a world without prejudice through art that answered the theme “WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE WHEN…. • WeBuildCommunity?• WeFindCommonGround?• DiversityisaStrength?• WeTakeActionAgainstHate?• WeAreDifferent,Together? Close to 170 pieces of art were submitted from 23 schools. Eight judges from ADL’s Education Committee had the challenging task of considering each piece of artwork based on its originality, creativity, universality and impact. Participants shared their visions with explanations of each unique piece. The winning artwork will be available to view on ADL’s website mountainstates.adl.org following the awards presentation at the No Place for Hate Celebration Breakfast on April 12. l
