When you shop at an independent local business…

1. You keep more money in your local economy & support local jobs Buying local means less infrastructure and more money to beautify your community. Buying local instead of online ensures that sales taxes are reinvested where they belong: in your community.

2. You help the environment Buying from a local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them.

3. You encourage community We know you, and you know us. We support local schools, libraries, charities, and arts and educational programs. Local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains.

4. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify our community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong—right here in your community!

5. You benefit from our expertise You are our friends and neighbors, and we have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. We’re passionate about what we do. Why not take advantage of it?

6. You create more choice We pick the items we sell based on what we know you like and want. We're not beholden to corporate interests, market research, or suppliers' advertising dollars. We believe you're unique and interesting, and we shop for YOU.

7. You invest in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community.

8. You make this community a destination The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

In the upcoming months, we will be featuring more ‘Shop Local/Eat Local’ information and ideas to HELP bring shoppers & revenue to our community.

We were all gathered at the DuPre Chateau for the Krewe of Midas Ball - THE premier social event of Mardi Gras. Membership is by invitation only. Pierre DuPre is the most influential man in New Orleans, and his home has been the site of the ball for many years. Pierre DuPre has presided over the festivities as king Midas for years, his beloved daughter Alexis at his side as Queen. Things have changed! Pierre was married just three months ago to a MUCH younger woman. Many believe he marred beneath this station, and his new bride Melissa, is only after his money. So Alexis went off to Europe, missing Mardi Gras for the first time in her life - little did she know her father would miss it, too! While relaxing in his billiard room before his appearance at the ball, HE WAS MURDERED - strangled with a set of antique Mardi Gras beads.

It was a fun-filled evening with nearly 100 guests in attendance. The venue was the American Center in Rockton, and a wonderfully delicious dinner was provided by Hoffman House. And something different: some of the Roscoe Chamber Ambassador’s sponsored a dessert table with cakes, cookies and cupcakes decorated for Mardi Gras-yummm! There was also a raffle with a bunch of really great prizes.

After dinner the Pecatonica Playhouse Theatre troupe entertained us with ‘Murder at Mardi Gras’. Each guest received info about the event, clues, the police report and the Last Will and Testament of Pierre DuPre to try to help us along. Some of us have never been to a murder mystery dinner, so didn’t know what to expect or the kinds of questions to ask. After the sheriff introduced each of the characters, they spread out and went from table to table to answer any questions we had as we tried to figure out ‘Who Done It’, which was not as easy as we thought it would be! Each suspect tried desperately to plead their innocence, and sometimes tried to blame it on someone else! Our table narrowed it to 3 out of 6 suspects and then after giving our final answer, changed it again - but STILL didn’t get it correct! Guess we’d better attend a few more of these dinners to hone our sleuthing skills.

So, who done it? Isn’t it always the lawyer . . .

L-R: Winner Bryland Lawson, Prairie Hill Superintendent and Dollars for Scholars committee member Ted Rehl, winner Emily Puckett, Dollars for Scholars committee member from First National Bank, Gail Daer.

The 2010 Roscoe Chamber Dollars for Scholars award winners are Bryland Lawson and Emily Puckett, both of Hononegah High School. The presentation of both $500 scholarships was awarded on Friday, May 21 before the monthly Chamber board meeting.

As usual, Ted Rehl’s enthusiasm in talking about the process of choosing and the awarding of the winners was contagious. He told the winners to slow down and enjoy everything about their college experience so that they can totally appreciate where they came from and where they’re going.

Best friends throughout high school, both Bryland and Emily will be taking similar paths for their future careers. Bryland will be continuing on to UW-Madison majoring in International Studies, with an emphasis on global security. Emily will be going to George Washington University, and studying conflict resolution and security. Both hope to eventually work for the CIA, where Emily says Bryland will probably be working for her! Congratulations to both of our 2010 winners!

The May Business After Hours was hosted by the Chamber’s Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club Leads Group, and was held at Sabrosa Tex-Mex Restaurant on Elevator Road in Roscoe. Sabrosa owner, Roy Niksich, a member of the networking group, pulled out all the stops to make this a great event for all who attended.

The group, who meets the 2nd & 4th Wednesday morning of each month, held the After Hours event to network with other business owners, and to recruit for their group as well as the Roscoe Area Chamber. There were a couple folks who came that were not familiar with the group, so members were happy to tell them how to join. Like other Leads Groups, only one person per business category may join the group.

‘Join us for breakfast and grow your business’ is what the group hopes to accomplish. Members of the group give and take referrals as a cost-effective way to find new business. If you are interested in finding out more information about this morning Leads Group, please contact Cindy at 815-997-3367 or Jim at 815-624-2210. Thanks to all the members for a wonderful evening and the great door prizes that were donated!
