Priscilla Cummings Priscilla Cummings is often thought to be from Maryland because of her well- known books set in Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas: Chadwick The Crab, and Red Kayak. However, she actually grew up on a dairy farm in western Massachusetts, where she wrote and illustrated her first stories about their farm animals. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in English literature, Priscilla became a newspaper reporter, and was honored as UPI’s Journalist of the Year for Virginia in 1981. In the same year, she moved to Maryland, which inspired her to write picture books and novels for children. Her most recent novel, The Journey Back, the companion book to Red Kayak, begins at a juvenile detention facility located in Western Maryland, and follows the journey of fourteen-year-old Digger on the run. Jackie Urbanovic Jackie Urbanovic is the New York Times best-selling author and illustrator of Duck at the Door, Duck Soup, and Duck and Cover, as well as the illustrator of If You're Hoppy, by April Pulley Sayre. She lives in Silver Spring, Maryland. Growing up, Jackie spent her childhood immersed in story. She came from a family of oral storytellers and comedians. Jackie attended Maryland Institute of Art, where she received her BFA. She then began her career as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 1997, she began studying with author Jane Resh Thomas and added author to her credits, along with illustrator, when Duck at the Door was published in 2007. It became a NY Times Bestseller and was followed by Duck Soup, Duck and Cover and Sitting Duck. Floyd Cooper Floyd Cooper was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He began drawing at age three on pieces of plasterboard left over from his father’s work as a builder, and continued to draw constantly after that. Floyd received a degree in fine arts from the University of Oklahoma. After graduating, he worked as an artist for a major greeting card company. In 1984 he moved to New York City to pursue his dream career as an illustrator of books. His first illustrations were for Eloise Greenfield’s book, Grandpa’s Face, which brought great attention to his work. The technique Cooper uses is called oil wash on board, which is really amazing to watch. Floyd received a Coretta Scott King Award for his illustrations in The Blacker the Berry and Coretta Scott King Honor for his illustrations in Brown Honey in Broomwheat Tea and I Have Heard of a Land.
