EXALTED RULER’S CORNER

The holidays are here and the lodge is in a constant flurry of activity. I hope you partici-pated in and have enjoyed recent events.

Veterans Day was a huge success, golf tournament was beyond my wildest dreams. More sponsors and players than ever thanks to the outstanding efforts of the golf outing committee. Too many names to publish....thanks to all. All proceeds go to the Greater Pine Island Charitable Trust.

We are in need of funds for our building and all other (general) funds concerning this Lodge. It is critical for us to raise these funds. In a review of last year’s financial results the Grand Lodge wrote us up for our low club gross margin of 51%. The house commit-

tee was tasked with getting our drink prices in line with the Elks policy of a 35% cost of sales (COS) pricing structure. The prices which were put into effect in September represent our attempt to comply with that policy. However, we still fall short. Only the well drinks and bottled domestic beer meet the policy. On a total basis we miss the 35% goal by 5%. We hopefully will end the current year, which will benefit from 7 months of the in-crease, with a result which will compare much more favorably than last years 51%.

Please plan on attending our Memorial Service to our absent members, who will come no more, on Sunday, December 3. Our annual Christmas Party will be Saturday, December 16, serving a.$20 prime rib. Dinner and our New Years' Eve party is on December 31.

We will continue to have two meetings a month, the2nd Tuesday of the month will be business only and the 4th Tuesday initiation only. Social hour will be 5:00 - 6:30 for both meetings.

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

Hi everyone! I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome back our part time residents! I look forward to seeing you again. Our Veterans Day affair on November 11 was a great success. We served dinner to approximately 85 people, of which 40 were Veterans. I feel compelled to thank all the volunteers for their various contributions to this affair. Jim Flanders for the wonderful tribute to our Veterans.

Cooks: Stan and Karen Chmielewski , Beverly Henderson, Deb Gordon Servers: Bob Gordon, George Yorkston 50/50 team: Ann Mcdonald and Sandy Madey

It is important to remember “Why we are Members”.

BECAUSE – We Elks are a nationwide community service organization of nearly a million American citi-zens. We love our Country and desire to preserve its cherished institutions, traditions and values. We respect our neighbors and constantly seek to promote their well-being. We love and enjoy life and be-lieve this enjoyment is increased by sharing it with family, friends and all with whom we come in contact.

As Elks, we may want to exercise “Brotherly Love” in this great and beautiful season.

If you need me, I can be reached at (239) 283-4388 or [email protected]. Fred and I wish all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year!!

Fraternally yours, Judy Hopkins, Secretary

LEE’S ENF CORNER

The Elks National Foundation recently introduced a film series titled “The Future Looks Like…” featuring short profiles of all of the 20 top Most Valuable Students from 2017. From expressing their gratitude, to the Elks to sharing their college and career goals. these short films will make you feel good about your support, their passion and our future.

For Samantha Johnson, the future looks like a lifetime a service. “You don’t have to leave the country to find people who need help,” says Samantha, who comes from of small rural community in Illinois. “You can serve literally anywhere.”

Leul Dadi’s life began on an Ethiopian estate. His family relocated to a modest home in suburban Dallas and then to an inner-city apartment. He’s experienced the extremes of economic inequality. For Leul, the future looks like studying, understanding and ultimately addressing the issue.

To hear from the rest of the top 20 and to watch the series, visit enf.elks.org/TheFutureLooksLike.

For 2017-18, the Elks National Foundation allocated $2.89 million to fund the Most Valuable Student scholarship program, which includes 500 four-year ranging from $4,000 to $50,000. For more information about the Most Valuable Student scholarship program, including eligibility and deadlines, visit enf.elks.org/MVS.

HOUSE COMMITTEE MESSAGES

Volunteers, treat them right!

Please remember, anyone you find working in the Lodge is a volunteer. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. It is impolite to be rude or disrespectful to them or to be impatient with those who donate their time to serve you. If you have any complaints, comments, or suggestions for improvement please direct them to the House Committee Chairman: Ron Oja at [email protected]. Please also contact the House Committee if you want to volunteer your time.

In December we are planning our Christmas Party and New Year’s Eve for your enjoyment. Also, look forward to Heike’s fabulous Hungarian Goulash Dinner, made from scratch, simmered for 3 hours with all the right spic-es.
