Article source: http://tarahedman.com/girls-daddies-knew/
I’m spending the morning waiting
for my car in the repair shop. Four men
in flannel (I missed the flannel memo)
and I sit around smelling tires and
inhaling exhaust fumes while an
enchanting little fairy is in constant
motion around her daddy. She climbs
on him, giggles, turns around, and then
she’s back to twirling on the tile.
She’s bouncing and spinning
around in her pink frilly skirt. Her black
cable knit tights are sagging around
her tiny knees, and her puffy coat
makes her arms stand out further than
is natural. To top off the ensemble is a
shiny crystal tiara. It’s been tacked
down to her head with what appears
to be about 60 haphazard bobby pins.
She’s probably four years old. So
little, so vulnerable. She doesn’t seem
concerned about it as she sings about
teapots and ladybugs in her black
Mary Janes. I feel myself tear up as I
watch her. I tear up as I watch him
watch her. She could not possibly
know at four what impact this man, his
character, or his words will have on her
for years to come. And, maybe he
doesn’t know either.
So, to all the daddies with little girls
who aren’t old enough yet to ask for
what they need from you, here is what
we wish you knew:
1. How you love me is how I will love
myself.
2. Ask how I am feeling and listen to
my answer, I need to know you
value me before I can understand
my true value.
3. I learn how I should be treated by
how you treat my mom, whether
you are married to her or not.
4. If you are angry with me, I feel it
even if I don’t understand it, so talk
to me.
5. Every time you show grace to me or
someone else, I learn to trust God a
little more.
6. I need to experience your nurturing
physical strength, so I learn to trust
the physicality of men.
7. Please don’t talk about sex like a
teenage boy, or I think it’s
something dirty.
8. When your tone is gentle, I
understand what you are saying
much better.
9. How you talk about female bodies
when you’re ‘just joking’ is what I
believe about my own.
10. How you handle my heart, is how I
will allow it to be handled by others.
11. If you encourage me to find what
brings joy, I will always seek it.
12. If you teach me what safe feels like
when I’m with you, I will know better
how to guard myself from men who
are not.
13. Teach me a love of art, science,
and nature, and I will learn that
intellect matters more than dress
size.
14. Let me say exactly what I want
even if it’s wrong or silly, because I
need to know having a strong
voice is acceptable to you.
15. When I get older, if you seem afraid
of my changing body, I will believe
something is wrong with it.
16. If you understand contentment for
yourself, so will I.
17. When I ask you to let go, please
remain available; I will always come
back and need you if you do.
18. If you demonstrate tenderness, I
learn to embrace my own
vulnerability rather than fear it.
19. When you let me help fix the car
and paint the house, I will believe I
can do anything a boy can do.
20. When you protect my femininity, I
learn everything about me is worthy
of protecting.
21. How you treat our dog when you
think I’m not watching tells me
more about you than does just
about anything else.
22. Don’t let money be everything, or I
learn not to respect it or you.
23. Hug, hold, and kiss me in all the
ways a daddy does that are right
and good and pure. I need it so
much to understand healthy touch.
24. Please don’t lie, because I believe
what you say.
25. Don’t avoid hard conversations,
because it makes me believe I’m
not worth fighting for.
It’s pretty simple, really. Little girls just
love their daddies. They each
think their daddy hung the moon.
Once in a while when you look at your
little gal twirling in her frilly skirt,
remember she’ll be grown one day.
What do you want her to know about
men, life, herself, love? What you do
and say now matters for a lifetime.
Daddies, never underestimate the
impact of your words or deeds on your
daughters, no matter their age.
I want to thank everyone for their kind messages, cards, thoughts, prayers during my emergency surgery and support afterwards. I would like to thank the ladies of my Sunday school class for the plant they sent. Thaznks also to Tom and Kathy for their visits. I have missed you all very much and will be glad to see you in Church again soon.
Love to all - Cheri Salter

This I know. What are
s o m e o f t h e m o s t
f u n d a m e n t a l a n d
foundational beliefs we must
wrap our heads, hearts and
hands around? For our own
sake and for the sake of
others. Knowing that a
fulfilling life that will last for
an eternity is at stake… what
must we know. I’m sure
you’ll want to add to this list,
but please, do not subtract.
I’m sure you’ll find holes, but
please don’t miss out on the
whole picture. This I know…
Jesus matters. He matters to
every person… if they know
of him or not; he matters.
So, please – accept God’s
gift to you this Christmas
season; His Son.

summary statements from

John 4 – Jesus has an
encounter with a Samaritan
woman while sitting at a
well. Every follower of Jesus
needs to clearly understand
that non-believers and the
disconnected are looking for
an authentic Christian, not
rehearsed, surface level,
churchy faith. Secondly,
every believer must be
ready to tell others the story
of how Jesus changed their
life. And non-believers need
to know and experience the
real person of Jesus
because He is the way the
truth and the life … they’ll
do this when we are
authentic, prepared and
use every opportunity for
others to hear God’s Word
so that faith may develop.
Acts 16 – Through Paul,
Silas, a Jailer and his family
we see something every
believer needs to know; we
will endure hardship – just
like the rest of the world –
but, the difference will be
seen in HOW we respond.
We must use the Word of
God to give testimony of
Jesus. There can be value in
hardship and we must be
rooted in scripture and
prayer so that moments of
tension can yield a Godly
result.
1st Thessalonians 5:16-18
- Every believer and
nonbeliever alike, must know
and live out this truth; A
balanced life that is
connected to God’s Will
can only be accomplished
through the conduit of
Thanksgiving
Luke 5:17-26 - Through
the healing of a paralyzed
man Jesus teaches us that
Faith requires an investment.
Paying a price today not
only gains a future benefit, it
also has a direct impact
today.
3 lessons — First, we can
never know the timing of
Jesus. We must be ready to
invest into lives today. This is
seen in the devotion of the
paralyzed man’s four friends
who carried him and did
everything possible to place
their friend in the presence
of Jesus. Second, our own
faith matters to other people
and Jesus. And third, a
changed life is always proof
of Jesus’ work in us.
John 14:6; 18:37; 20:24-29;
1 Cor. 15:3-5 - Our response
to the person of Jesus will
make an eternal difference.
The man, Jesus of Nazareth.
Son of God. Son of Mary
and Joseph. Fully God, fully
man. This is what we must
know about Jesus. First,
Jesus is the way, the truth
and the life. Secondly, Jesus
is the King. Third, Jesus is
Eternal. He is raised from the
dead, he is alive – in bodily
form. And finally, He is our
message.
From 1 Corinthians 15 we
learn; Most importantly and
according to (or fulfillment
of) scripture;
1. Jesus died for our sins
2. He was buried
3. He was raised on the
third day
4. He appeared to Peter,
Paul, James, the Twelve,
and more than 500 at
one time
5. And His Grace changed
me.
This is what the Twelve
preached. This is what Paul
preached. This is what you
believe.

One of the missions we
support here at First Church
of Christ is Midwest Christian
Se rv ices locat ed in
Peterson, Iowa. The
adolescent male residential
treatment facility has a
mission of “Building better
lives.”
They have been serving
children for well over 45
years. They currently serve
male adolescents between
the ages of 8-18 years old.

individual therapy, group
skills, life skills, family
therapy, school, psychiatric

development, recreation,
and most importantly to us,
spiritual development in a
Christian environment.
We are privileged to be
a part of this mission in a
hands on way. Boys from
MCS regularly attend
Sunday school and worship
services with us. We also
provide a monthly birthday
party and gifts for those
students celebrating in that
month. In addition we
provide a special summer
camp for them at Camp
Nebowa that includes not
only worship and learning
God’s word but other
activities such as fishing,
a r c h e r y , a n d f r e e
recreation time.
Even our Bible Buddies
youth program have
included MCS in their
mission this fall and winter.
They have raised over $125
to purchase items for the
boys for Christmas.
In turn the boys have
also done some great
things for us. For example,
they are fantastic help
when we do our annual
Rake and Run. You will also
see them serving in the
community, such as helping
clean up fairgrounds after
the rodeo along with many
other service type projects.
The boys are a joy to visit
with and we encourage
you to visit with them,
encourage them, and be
an example for their journey
with Christ.
Christian Evangelistic Mission
That the word would
become flesh and dwell
among us is truly amazing. It
is one thing to show up and
experience what people
are going through it is quite
another to do so to save
those who have rejected
you. This time of year
reminds us that Jesus came
into this world to save and
bring us back to God
because of His great love.
Praise God for the great
things he has done in 2013
in the lives of people at our
new churches. Last year we
saw Northwest Christian
Church in Council Bluffs
become total ly self -
supporting before schedule.
This year they started
sending support to CEM to
start more new churches.
Life Bridge Church of Christ
(Puente de Vida Iglesia de
Cristo—our church plant in
DesMoines to reach first
generation Hispanics) is
making a good transition to
training leaders to lead the
small groups in the church.
Life Bridge is also expanding
its influence by working with

We are now receiving Harvest Offerings. Over the next few weeks feel free to place your
Harvest Offering in the collection trays during worship services. This year’s offering will be dedicated to carpet replacement and other
building improvements. May God Bless you in your time of generous giving.
Once again Esther Circle
will be sending funds to IDES
for the purchase of goats.
Each goat costs $60. These
goats are given to families
to use for income for their
families. They sell the milk
and cheese and build herds
which can then be used for
meat.
If you would like to give
to this ministry, you can give
your offerings to any Esther
Circle member: Sandy
Specht, Eleanor Johnston,
Joyce Clark, Jan Hanson,
Judy Ferrin, Vangie Sins, or
Betty Martin.
Thank you for your
support of this project.
We would like to thank all the janitorial volunteers
that helped to keep our church facility clean and
spiffy in 2013. Your hard work and the time you take to
clean and vacuum is greatly appreciated.
In 2014 please note that if you are schedule to clean
that you have include cleaning all the bathrooms
each week.
Should you want to be added to the janitorial
volunteer staff please or have any questions about
your janitorial duties please contact Dixie Draper at
(712) 229-1864 or (712) 225-4838.
This year’s Annual Thanksgiving Dinner served
more people than ever with 210 meals being
served, carried out, and delivered. Because of
your generous support of food donations along
with financial support from our church family
and other individuals we were able to donate
$363.01 to the Cherokee County Ministerial
Association (CCMA) after expenses.
WELL DONE!

Do you know someone
who would make a great
foster parent? Because
current foster families leave
the system, often because
of positive reasons such as
adopting a child or retiring
after many years of service,
Iowa has an ongoing need
to find new foster families
every year.
Children enter foster
care through no fault of
their own, but often due to
circumstances related to
abuse or neglect. Foster
families provide a
temporary home for a child
until he or she can be safely
reunited with family or, if
needed, find a new
permanent home through
adoption.
You might be surprised
at what you or someone
you know could offer as a
foster parent! There is no
typical model for a foster
parent. Foster parents
come from all backgrounds
and walks of life, and
Iowa especially has a need
for more families who could
share their support and
guidance with teenagers,
sibling groups and children
with special needs or
behaviors. It only takes one
caring adult to make a
world of difference for a
child.
Iowa KidsNet is a
statewide collaboration of
agencies that recruits,
trains, licenses and supports
Iowa's foster and adoptive
parents. To learn more
about how you could make
a difference for a child,
visit www.iowakidsnet.com
or call 1.800.243.0756. You
can then sign up for an
information session to learn
more about the process.
The Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP)
offered through Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Inc. may be able to help
you pay your winter heating bill. This program is funded through
the Iowa Department of Human Rights and has been established to
help qualified low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a
portion of their primary heating costs.
Your local Mid-Sioux office will be taking applications through
April 30, 2014. Each applicant will need to furnish a copy of their
most recent heating and electric bill, original Social Security or I-
94 card for each household member, and proof of the household’s
income for the past three months (13 weeks), the past twelve (12)
months, or the most recent calendar year (tax return). Eligibility
for participation is established according to federal income
guidelines listed in the box. Applicants eligible for an award will
be paid on a first come, first serve basis, and all payments are
subject to availability of funds.
