“Did you talk to Nannie today? How’s she doing?” My mom let me know that my grand-mother was feeling tired and taking it easy. I said I hoped she would feel better soon and mom said “Oh, she’s fine, she just spent all
afternoon dancing and needs to take a break!” Of course the dancing was probably preceded by a card game or bean bag baseball or going for a walk. I think my 92-year-old grandmother is more active than I am! She moved to an independent living community in Folsom about two years ago and is certainly enjoying her cozy apartment, with the knowledge that friends and activities — and help if she needs it — are just outside her door. Many readers turn to Golden Pages when considering new living situations or other options available for them-selves or family members. While it’s obviously best to plan ahead for possible changes in circumstances, we all know that many times families suddenly find themselves scrambling because a situation has become urgent. Several times this year, I’ve shared the information in this book with friends who are helping relatives with some of these important decisions. I am glad to help and make people aware of the many great resources available to seniors in our region! Thank you to the readers who have called to let me know much they appreciate this publication. Observing how many of my friends are transitioning into retirement lifestyles (as well as the example of my folks and grandmother), I can only say that it looks really fun. In this edition you can read about just a few of the sports, so-cial and service clubs in our area that not only offer fun, but other benefits as well! Check them out — you’re sure to meet some great people and may discover, or re-discover, some new interests to pursue! We hope you share this magazine with friends and neigh-bors. And please let the businesses listed know that you saw them in the Golden Pages!

How to organize your affairs Savvy SeniorBy Jim Miller
Dear Savvy Senior, MywifeandIwouldliketogetourpersonalandfi-nancial affairs in order so our kids will know what’s going on if we get sick or die. What tips can you offer? — Procrastinating Paul
Dear Paul, Organizing your key information and getting your personal and financial affairs in order is a great gift to your loved ones. To help you get started, your first step is to gather up all of your important personal, financial and legal infor-mation so you can arrange it in a format that will benefit you now, and your loved ones later. Then you’ll need to create various lists of important information and instructions of how you want certain things handled when you die or if you become incapaci-tated. Here’s a checklist of areas to focus on.
PERSONAL INFORMATION Contacts: Make a master list of names and phone numbers of close friends, clergy, doctors, and profes-sional advisers such as your lawyer, accountant, broker and insurance agent. Medical information: Include a list of medications you and your spouse take, along with any allergies and illnesses.
For phone referral to information and assistance call 211 In Sacramento, 211 can be used to locate support services for older Americans and persons with disabilities.Visit the 211 website at www.211sacramento.org.

“The key to successful aging is to pay as little attention to it
as possible.” — Judith Regan
srgoldenpages.com Sacramento Region Golden Pages 2017 | 7
By Jennifer K. Morita
Liz Applegate is on a mission to convince people it really does mat-
ter what you eat.The UC Davis Director of Sports
Nutrition says eating more vegeta-bles, whole grains, beans, nuts and berries reduces the risk of adult-onset diabetes as well as Alzheimer’s Dis-ease and dementia.
“Would it surprise you if I told you eating for a healthy brain isn’t that much different from eating for a healthy heart?”
Applegate, a nationally renowned expert on nutrition, explained the benefits of the Mind Diet at a recent lecture on healthy brain food put on by the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Dis-ease Center.
The Sacramento-based research center that also conducts comprehen-sive patient evaluations, has hosted a lecture series for the last five years.
“I realized five years ago that people didn’t have access to good information,” Administrator Jane La-Grande said. “We have a tremendous faculty, and we really wanted to share what we were doing and share infor-mation we knew about Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.
“We wanted to be a community resource and not just a place people come to for evaluations. We wanted an educational component for the public.”
Applegate said the death rate for Alzheimer’s Disease increased rap-idly between 1980 and 2010, and the growing number of cases can’t be explained by the aging population alone.
“What the heck is going on? A lot of people want to think there are tox-ins in the water or contamination in our food. That’s an easy answer. We can fix that,” Applegate said. “But
the bigger picture has to do with our lifestyle.”
Research shows people with Al-zheimer’s and dementia have similar characteristics with people who have Type 2 diabetes, or adult onset dia-betes.
The Mind Diet includes: • Plants — eat at least one dark, leafy green salad or steamed veg-etable, plus at least one other colorful vegetable per day. • Fruits — eat one cup of berries at least twice a week. Frozen is as good as fresh, but dried berries lose many healthy benefits through the dehydrating process. • Nuts — eat at least one ounce of nuts a day. No one nut is better than
another. Sorry, chocolate covered nuts do not count. • Beans — eat beans at least every other day. • Red Wine — drink a 5-ounce glass of red wine per day, but you can’t save all your servings for the weekend. Wine can be substituted with pomegranate juice or dark, un-sweetened grape juice. • Poultry — eat poultry at least twice a week • Seafood — eat fish at least once, preferably twice, a week • Whole grains — the less pro-cessed, the better
It also calls for limiting: • Saturated fats • Meat, particularly beef • Cheese • Sugar
The Mind Diet is a combination of the Mediterranean and another re-search-based diet, known as DASH, geared to reduce hypertension.
“All three diets worked, if followed really well over time,” Applegate said. “But only the Mind Diet, even
Mind Diet helps protect against dementia and more

if it was modestly followed, still had a risk reduction.”
In addition to nutritional advice, Applegate offered a tip on dietary supplements.
While vegetables, berries and nuts are rich in vitamins and other healthy compounds, simply taking pills or a nutrition bar won’t have the same benefits.
“Don’t take a vitamin pill and think you’re covered,” Applegate said. “Vegetables and berries have hun-dreds of compounds, that’s why a bar or a pill or nutritional supplement is
so inadequate relative to what real food provides.
“... There’s a synergy with what’s in food that we don’t understand, yet. Believe in food, question supple-ments.”
Applegate added that you should always consult your healthcare pro-vider before taking memory supple-ments because they have many side effects.
This year’s lecture series will focus on maintaining a healthy brain and will touch on topics such as physical exercise and activity, diet, as well as social and intellectual stimulation, LaGrande said.
The upcoming lecture series so far includes: • Dr. Charles DeCarli, UC Davis neurology professor, will discuss healthy brain aging, 6 p.m., May 25, MIND Institute, 2825 50th Street in Sacramento • Caregiver Workshop, 8 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., Nov. 4, MIND Institute, 2825 50th Street in Sacramento

How to choose a medical alert systemSavvy SeniorBy Jim Miller
A good medical alert system is an affordable and effective tool that
can help keep you or a loved one safe. Here are some tips that can help you choose one that is best for you.
How They Work Medical alert systems, which have been around for about 40 years, are popular products for elderly seniors who live alone. Leased for about $1 a day, these basic systems provide a wearable help button – usually in the form of a neck pendant or wristband – and a base station that connects to the home phone line, or to a cellular network if no landline is present. At the press of a button, you can call and talk to a trained operator through the system’s base station re-ceiver, which works like a powerful speakerphone. The operator will find out what’s wrong, and will notify family members, a friend, neighbor or emergency services as needed. In addition to the basic home sys-tems, many companies today (for an additional fee) are also offering mo-tion sensitive pendants that can de-tect a fall and automatically call for help if the wearer is unable to push the button and mobile medical alerts that work when the wearer is away from home. Mobile alerts work like cell phones with GPS tracking capa-bilities. They allow you to talk and listen to the operator directly through the pendant button, and because of the GPS, a general location would be known in order for help to be sent.
What to Consider When shopping for a home medical alert system, here are some things to look for to help you choose a quality system: • Extra help buttons: Most com-panies offer waterproof neck pendant and wristband help buttons, but some
also offer wall-mounted buttons that can be placed near the floor in high fall risk areas like the bathroom or kitchen, in case the pendant isn’t be-ing worn. • Range: The base station should have a range of at least 400 feet so it can be activated from anywhere on the property – even in the yard. • Backup: Make sure the system has a battery backup in case of a pow-er failure. • Monitoring: Make sure the re-sponse center is staffed with trained emergency operators located in the U.S., are available on a 24-hour ba-sis, and responds to calls promptly. • Contacts: Choose a company that provides multiple contact choic-es – from emergency services, to a friend or family member who lives nearby – that they can contact if help is needed • Certification: Find out if the monitoring center has been certified by Underwriters Laboratories, a non-profit safety and consulting company.
Top Rated Companies While there are dozens of compa-nies that offer medical alert systems, here are some top options that offer both home and mobile alerts: Bay Alarm Medical (fees start at $30 per month for a home landline system); Life Station ($30/month); Medical Alert ($33/month); MobileHelp ($30/month); and Phillips Lifeline ($30/month plus a $50 activation fee). Most of these companies offer dis-counts if you pay three to 12 months in advance. For mobile medical alerts only, you should also see GreatCall’s Lively Mobile and Wearable (these cost $50 plus a $20 to $35 monthly service fee) and Consumer Cellular’s Ally ($150 plus $25 per month). Golden Seniors Softball Club welcomes all levels of talent
Play Ball!By Jennifer K. Morita
Seventy-eight year-old Henry Low grew up playing softball.
Except for a couple years on his church team in high school, Low was a retired data-processor in his mid-50s before he played on an organized team.
“Growing up, we played in the streets almost every day during the summer, and I gained a lot of experi-ence that way,” said Low, now a Life-time member of the Golden Seniors Softball Club.
Founded in the late ’80s by a group of retired men playing in Tahoe Park, the Golden Seniors Softball Club of Sacramento has grown from six teams to eight leagues with nearly 600 players from as far away as Dix-on and Rocklin.
The club is open to men age 50 or older and women at least 45 years old, with leagues geared for specific age brackets.
Between spring and summer, these senior softballers battle it out morn-ings and evenings at Howe Park and the Sacramento Softball Complex,
culminating the season with their Championship Picnic in September.
“It started out very small, and quickly expanded,” Club President Bill Hill, 64, said.
The club’s day leagues are so pop-ular, there’s a wait list to play every year, although organizers have a lit-tle trouble recruiting players for the leagues that play at night.
Each league plays about 20 games throughout the season.
“I’ve played softball my whole life,” said Hill, who joined the Gold-en Seniors Softball Club 14 years ago. “I wanted to stay competitive and test myself, but it’s also become a social thing. This is place where you can meet new people and new friends.”
Deanna Sesso, 56, played softball most of her life except for about a 10 year window while her kids were young.
“I picked it up again after my daughter graduated from high school,” Sesso said. “It’s fun. To me, it’s like socializing. I call it my social hour.”
Now, she plays for a few different clubs in the region and says while the Golden Seniors Softball Club is more laid-back than tournament clubs, the players are still competitive.
“It’s not as hard on your body as the regular city leagues that allow slid-ing. This is just a notch or two more laid back from that,” Sesso said “We still want to win, but if we don’t, it’s still fun for us, and everybody gets to play, regardless of their skill level.
“We have some guys who play tournaments every single weekend, and some who have never played in a tournament, and it’s the same with the women.”
Players are drafted for their teams so each year they play with differ-ent people, which helps balance the

teams talent-wise, but there’s an add-ed benefit.
“You get to meet all kinds of differ-ent people,” Hill said. “Every year is a brand-new team, so every year you meet ten other guys you didn’t know the year before. By about the fifth year, you know just about everybody in the league.”
The Golden Seniors Softball Club also has more than 100 Lifetime members, who may not be able to play anymore but still help out and attend games.
Low, who played on a team up un-til suffering a stroke a few years ago, still serves as a league commissioner.
“I like the activity,” Low said. “It’s a chance to get together with fellow old guys that are interested in keep-ing active and hopefully improve their health and getting a lot of ex-ercise.”

Tips to Help Prevent a Return to the HospitalThe Associated Press
Patients too often leave the hospi-tal without knowing how to care for themselves, leading to a preventable return. Here are tips to improve your chances of a successful recovery at home: • Be sure you understand your ill-ness and the care you received in the hospital. • Ask if you will require help at home. Can you bathe yourself? Climb stairs? Will you need band-ages changed or shots? If so, do you have a caregiver to help, or will you need to arrange a visiting nurse? • Repeat back your care instruc-tions, to be sure you understand them. • Ask for a written discharge plan that lists your medical conditions, treatments, and plan for ongoing care. • Get a list of all medications, how to use them, and what to do if you ex-perience side effects. Be sure to ask whether to continue medications you were taking before this hospitaliza-tion. • Ask what symptoms suggest you’re getting worse and what to do if that happens, especially at night or during the weekend. • What follow-up appointments will you need and when? Ask if your hospital will make the appointments for you. • Do you have transportation home, to follow-up appointments, and to the drugstore? • If you have a regular physician, make sure the hospital sends a report of your hospital stay. • If you are uninsured or will have difficulty affording prescriptions, a hospital discharge planner or social worker may be able to link you to community resources that can help. • Get a name and number to call in case you have questions once at home.

Soroptimist, Odd Fellows continue traditions of service
Good WorksShrouded in mystery for decades,
clubs like the Odd Fellows and Soroptimists are more than secret handshakes and funny-sounding names.
These service organizations, whose members span the globe, are really about trying to make the world a bet-ter place and finding a little camara-derie along the way.
Soroptimist InternationalSoroptimist International gets its
name from two Latin words mean-ing sisterhood and best, according to longtime member Nancy Wolford-Landers.
“We interpret that to mean best for women,” she said.
Founded in Oakland in 1921, So-roptimist is a service organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and children.
The Sacramento club, established in 1923, is the fourth oldest in the world and is among a half dozen So-roptimist clubs in the greater Sacra-mento area.
“Back in the ’60s, our particular club was the largest in the world with over 150 members, but like all ser-vice clubs, we’ve been getting small-er,” said Wolford-Landers, a Soropti-mist since 1983.
Although it started as a women’s service organization, Soroptimist is open to anyone.
“Women lack in a lot of ways — economically, inequality in job pay-ment, domestic violence, human traf-ficking — and our club works hard to improve those situations,” said Wol-ford-Landers, a retired Sacramento County auditor controller.
Every year, the Sacramento So-roptimist club gives away more than $40,000 to programs such as Women Escaping A Violent Environment, My

Sister’s House and the Boys & Girls’ Club. They helped build a computer lab for youths in Rancho Cordova, updated the kitchen at the Wellspring Women’s Center and restored the Clunie Community Center in McKin-ley Park.
In addition to roughly $8,000 a year in scholarships, Soroptimist also runs two programs that help single moth-ers go back to school and get jobs as well as manage their finances.
“We offer a lot of scholarships be-cause we believe that education is the best way for women to achieve their full potential,” Wolford-Landers said. “... It’s always about building the individuals to be self-sufficient, productive members of society.”
The Sacramento club currently has about 60 members from all walks of life.
“We are probably one of the most diverse clubs in the area whether it’s racially, economically, profession-ally and age-wise,” Wolford-Landers said.
Like many clubs, Soroptimist membership has dwindled in recent years, so leaders are always recruit-ing.
“We have made a real effort to try and attract younger members,” Wol-
“We have made a real effort to try and attract younger
members. The real heart of our working membership are the
ones whose kids have just gone off to college and they’re
looking for some activities. They have a lot of energy and
a lot of enthusiasm.”
ford-Landers said. “The real heart of our working membership are the ones whose kids have just gone off to college and they’re looking for some activities. They have a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm.
“But we call ourselves the No Guilt Club. We’re really happy to have you contribute wherever and whenever you can.”
The Soroptimist Sacramento Club meets every Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., at the Casa Garden Res-taurant, 2760 Sutterville Road from September through June.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows
Longtime Sacramento Odd Fellow John Morgan isn’t really odd at all — he just wants to help people in need.
“We’re a well-kept secret,” John Morgan, 77, said. “... You can only play so much golf and go fishing so often … Even if I can only go to one meeting a year, if I can make a differ-ence in somebody’s life, to me that’s satisfaction.”
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows dates back to 18th Century England, when people were dying of famine and disease.
“There were several men of means who wanted to try and make a differ-ence, so they started having meetings in a pub and pooled their resources,” Morgan said.
They visited the sick, buried the dead and educated orphans.
“The community called them odd fellows because they thought what they did was odd,” Morgan said. “That’s how we got our name.”
With several lodges throughout the Sacramento region, the Odd Fellows

“The compensation of growing old...was simply this; that the passions remain as strong as ever, but one has gained — at last! — the power which adds the supreme flavor to existence, — the power of taking hold of experience, of turning it round, slowly, in the light.” — Virginia Woolf

has an auxiliary women’s group called the Rebekah’s as well as a youth camp near Sonora.
In addition to scholarships at American River College, the Sacramento Odd Fellows gives money to the Mustard Seed School and hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt for vi-sually impaired children.
Roughly 300 people show up for the hunt, which uses beeping easter eggs children can find and exchange for prizes. Afterwards, volunteers cook hamburgers and hot-dogs.
“The food that’s leftover we package very carefully and take downtown to feed the homeless,” Morgan said.
In California, the Odd Fellows run a children’s home in Gilroy and senior care facilities in Saratoga and Napa.
“The bad side is we’re suffering, like all fraternal or-ganizations, because we’re getting smaller and smaller,” Morgan said.
“But fraternal organizations are needed just as much to-day as they were a hundred years ago. Just look at how many homeless people you see every day when you leave the house.”
Members are not required to put in a certain number of hours.

Thyroid disorders often missed in seniorsSavvy SeniorBy Jim Miller
Dear Savvy Senior, Can you write a column on the overlooked problem of thyroid dis-ease? After struggling with chronic fatigue, joint pain and memory prob-lems, I was finally diagnosed hypo-thyroidism. Now, at age 70, I’m on thyroid medication and am doing great. Five years of feeling lousy. I wish I’d have known. —Frustrated Patient
Dear Frustrated, I’m glad to hear that you’re finally feeling better. Unfortunately, thyroid problems are quite common in older adults but can be tricky to detect be-cause the symptoms often resemble other age related health problems. In fact, as many as 30 million Ameri-cans have some form of thyroid dis-order, but more than half of them aren’t aware of it. Here’s a basic overview: The thy-roid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck that has a huge job. It produces hormones (called T3 and T4) that help regulate the rate of many of your body’s ac-tivities, from how quickly you burn calories to how fast your heart beats. It also influences the function of the brain, liver, kidneys and skin. If the gland is underactive and doesn’t produce enough thyroid hor-mones, it causes body systems to slow down. If it’s overactive, and churns out too much thyroid, it has the opposite effect, speeding up the body’s processes. The symptoms for an underactive thyroid (also known as hypothyroid-ism) – the most common thyroid dis-order in older adults – will vary but may include fatigue, unexplained weight gain, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, joint pain, muscle stiffness, dry skin and depression.
Some patients may even develop an enlarged thyroid (goiter) at the base of the neck. However, in older adults, it can cause other symptoms like memory impairment, loss of appetite, weight loss, falls or even inconti-nence. And the symptoms of an overactive thyroid (or hyperthyroidism), which is more common in people under age
50, may include a rapid heart rate, anxiety, insomnia, increased appe-tite, weight loss, diarrhea, excessive perspiration, as well as an enlarged thyroid gland. Too much thyroid can also cause atrial fibrillation, affect blood pressure and decrease bone density, which increases the risk of osteoporosis. Those with the greatest risk of de-veloping thyroid disorders are wom-en who have a family history of the disease. Other factors that can trig-ger thyroid problems include: auto-immune diseases like Hashimoto’s or Graves disease; thyroid surgery; radiation treatments to the neck or upper chest; and certain medications including interferon alpha and inter-
leukin-2 cancer medications, ami-odarone heart medication and lithium for bipolar disorder.
Get Tested If you have any of the aforemen-tioned symptoms, or if you’ve had previous thyroid problems or notice a lump in the base of your neck, ask your doctor to check your thyroid
levels. The TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) blood test is used to diag-nosis thyroid disorders. Thyroid disease is easily treated once you’ve been diagnosed. Stand-ard treatment for hypothyroidism involves daily use of the synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine (Lev-othroid, Synthroid and others), which is an oral medication that restores ad-equate hormone levels. And treatments for hyperthyroid-ism may include an anti-thyroid medication such as methimazole (Ta-pazole), which blocks the production of thyroid hormones. Another option is radioactive iodine, which is taken

orally and destroys the overactive thyroid cells and causes the gland to shrink. But this can leave the thyroid unable to produce any hormone and it’s likely that you’ll eventually be-come hypothyroid and need to start taking thyroid medication.

Sons in Retirement, a nearly 60 year-old organization with branch-
es throughout Northern and Central California, offers a lifeline for retired men looking for a little camaraderie. “It’s just a friendly organization of retired gentlemen,” 77-year-old Elk Grove resident Pete Eres said. “We’re just trying to keep seniors active, and give them a place to go and visit. “We don’t raise money. We don’t have a political agenda. There’s no religious orientation. We don’t sell light bulbs, or anything else. It’s just time for us to enjoy life.” Sons in Retirement started as a friendly luncheon in 1958 between former co-workers in San Mateo who wanted a way for retired men to get out and socialize with one another. Today, SIR is a non-profit organiza-tion with more than 15,500 members and 133 branches from Bakersfield to the Oregon border. The greater Sacramento region alone has 13 branches, including ones in Roseville, Carmichael and Lake of the Pines. Branches hold monthly luncheons, usually featuring a guest speaker whether it’s someone from the U.S. Coast Guard or the California Rail-road Museum. “We recently had a speaker from Vote Smart, but we always have an educational speaker who talks about some topic that is relevant to to the retired population,” Robin Aurelius, 78, said. The branches also organize a varie-ty of activities including weekly card games, fishing trips and tournaments, and bowling. Golfers in SIR put together regular rounds at courses throughout the re-gion. “It creates a sense of belonging,”
said Aurelius, a longtime member of the Carmichael SIR branch. “There are all kinds of sub-groups, and it’s great because you have something in common with one another whether it’s playing golf or bocce ball or fish-ing. Anyone can just start a group.”
Aurelius, a singer and musician, joined SIR four years ago so he could participate in a choral group that per-forms at nursing homes and senior communities throughout Sacramento County. Some branches also have groups for retirees interested in learning more about investments, computers, recreational vehicles and even li-censed radio amateurs.
“There’s a bridge group and a book discussion group,” Aurelius said. “We have a newsletter, and we keep track of all the members, so if some-one is sick a chaplain will call them. “Even if someone is aging and can’t get to a meeting anymore, somebody usually goes and picks him up.” Some branches also arrange travel tours whether it’s fishing trips to Alaska or a day trip to Old Sac. “The last one we had we toured the caverns underneath Old Sacramento where the old houses and shops used to be, and that was very, very inter-esting,” Eres said. “Afterwards, we went on the river for a cruise.” Once a year, each branch hosts a lunch for their spouses and partners. “They love it,” Eres said. “They re-ally enjoy it. They like to see where their husbands go every month and meet who they’re associating with. Plus, it’s nice to get all the wives to-gether.” For more information about Sons in Retirement, and to find a branch near you, go to www.sirinc.org.

COMMUNITY PROFILE By Jennifer K. Morita
In Woodland, no one embodies base-ball more than 78-year-old Barbara
Bodkin — not even hometown hero and Boston Red Sox All-Star Dustin Pedroia. A fixture at Clark Field for more than 40 years, Bodkin is the offi-cial scorekeeper for the local high school’s varsity team and has served on the Woodland Babe Ruth Base-ball League Board of Directors since 1976. She makes sure the snack shack is well-stocked, fills the team’s water jugs, buys pizza on game nights and every year she’s the one in charge of the fireworks booth and organizing the state tournament. “When my boys got out of base-ball and started their own lives, I just stayed on,” Bodkin said. “They want-ed me to stay, and so here I am.” Bodkin was among three recipi-ents of the 2017 Woodland Commu-nity Service Award for her work with young baseball enthusiasts.
“I’m doing it for the kids,” she said. “The boys start with Babe Ruth and so many of them make the high school team, so I get to know them. It’s all for the kids.” Bodkin, a Woodland native herself, played softball, basketball as well as hockey all through high school,
where she met her husband, Douglas, in 1953. “We were high school sweethearts, and we’ve been married 58 years,” Bodkin said. The Bodkins raised their two boys in the same town they grew up in. Douglas coached them through Little League and Babe Ruth before they went on to play for Woodland High. “It was great watching them play for the same school we went to,” Bodkin said. “The only thing I didn’t like was being in the stands when they got hurt and not being able to do anything.” During baseball season, Bodkin spends several mornings a week making sure everything is ready for the games. On game nights, she’s
busy keeping score and tracking the stats on players’ batting averages — all by hand. “I don’t own a computer. I do it all by hand. I’ve got great big scoresheets to keep the score on,” Bodkin said. “My son wants to buy me a computer and he keeps telling me there are pro-grams to do this and that, but I’m too old to learn. “Maybe if I were in my 40s or 50s.” This year, a new rule went into ef-fect limiting pitchers to 100 pitches per game, so Bodkin also has to keep count of throws and warn the coach when they were getting close. “I was good at math in school, and it’s not that hard a job to do,” Bodkin

said. “I try to keep my brain active.” The only time Bodkin visited the East Coast was to see the World Se-ries in 1994. Her team — 13-year-old Woodland boys in the Babe Ruth League — won. “My husband said to me, ‘After all the years you’ve put in, you want to watch them, don’t you?’ And I said, yes. So that was our vacation that year,” Bodkin said. “Just going to watch them play was such a thrill,” Bodkin said. “But to have them win the World Series and bring back the trophy was just won-derful.”
At home, Bodkin likes to garden in her spare time. When baseball season is over, she and her husband go on camping trips, where she gets to read while he goes fishing. But they always make sure to catch an Oakland A’s or San Francisco Gi-ants game whenever they’re playing the Boston Red Sox. “Dustin Pedroia is a Woodland boy, and I kept score for him,” Bodkin said. “Every year we go to a game and I get my annual hug from him. “He comes off the field because he knows I’m there, and I get my hug.”
