Vision

The £10 million e-Infrastructure programme is primarily concerned with consolidating and building on work to establish an e-infrastructure undertaken with other partners during the initial five-year investment in the UK e-science programme.

e-Infrastructure embraces networks, security, grids, data centres, specialist services and collaborative environments, and can include supporting operations centres, service registries, single sign-on, certificate authorities, training and community support services. The range of e-Infrastructure developments is already maturing: grid computing is now typically used as a basis for the computation and data management required by collaborative research, and JISC investments such as in virtual research environments and Shibboleth are presently being adopted.

Introduction to e-Infrastructure Security

One of the four themes of e-Infrastructure;

Split into three areas:

– Identity management and levels of assurance (IM & LOA)

– Developing and enhancing federated tools and services

– Virtual Organisation authorisation and management tools and services

Part of the ongoing work by JISC on security and access management;

Builds on the existing work in Core Middleware;

Links with the Transition to Federation programme;

Inputs to programme

Community consultation with a range of national and international experts, which is ongoing and includes meetings such as this one;

Some of the items from the recent core middleware wishlist that can be accommodated within the programme;

Direction from the JISC Committee for Support of Research;

OST AAA working group;

Background to IM and LOA

Trust amongst members of a federation requires robust identity management to be in place;

Different resources require different levels of assurance of a user to be able to access them;

Therefore need to gain consensus on:

– Equivalence of IM practices, processes and technologies

– How different LOA are created and assigned to resources

Increased use of virtual organisations by researchers to collaborate could change IM and LOA in institutions;

IM & LoA - Aims of the Call, Timescales and Funding

Help establish consolidation and consensus amongst the community on existing practice in the areas of identity management and level of assurance (phase 1);

Develop solutions to resolve gaps/issues (phase 2);

Two year duration with potential for six month extension

– Phase one over one year

– Phase two over one year

Call already issued and being marked;

Projects scheduled to start in September;

£650,000 total budget:

– £400,000 over the four areas in the first phase

– £250,000 in second phase

IM & LoA - Call Areas

First Phase:

– Identity Management within Institutions

– Identity Management across Institutional Boundaries

– Defining Level of Assurance

– Appropriate Level of Assurance

Second Phase:

– Closed call for gaps/issues identified in first phase

Developing and enhancing federated tools and services

Call for projects in September for £900,000;

Projects planned to start in January 2007 and finish December 2008;

Aims to support piloting and the wider adoption of an integrated Grid/Shibboleth approach to identity and access management through:

– Delegation within n-tier Web Service architectures

– Development and initial rollout of a “Virtual Home for Identities”

Virtual Organisation Management Tools and Services

Call for projects in September for £525,000;

Projects planned to start in January 2007 and finish December 2008;

Aims to ensure that appropriate authorisation services and related infrastructure are in place to support higher level tools for the construction and management of VOs;

Works in collaboration with the semantic models package, which is seeking to automate the VO set up processes.

Accounting and Usage

Comes under the Grid Services and Tools theme;

Reviewing existing models of accounting and usage as a first stage (£100K);

Acting on recommendations from first stage in second stage (£300K);

Potentially interesting area for security as traditionally closely tied in with AAI;
