They Say It...“Nestled on the panoramic backdrop of the ‘Meenachilaru’ and the age-old Church at Cherpunkal, BVM Holy Cross College is conspicuous for its congenial academic atmosphere. The Principal with his academic and administrative team takes good care of the students, whose enthusiasm makes the campus vibrant.”

The BVM College, Cherpunkal, indeed, happens to be one of the landmark memorials to a great and noble Soul of this Place - Bishop Vayalil of blessed memory… This temple of learning which offers a variety of courses- the conventional and the new generation ones -stands true testimony to tradition and nobility, quality and discipline and a level of eminence in education par excellence. Congratulations. With my prayer of good wishes,

BVM Holy Cross is a college that has in recent years registered a quantum jump in many aspects of its functioning. Something new is happening here in every month. Creativity and commitment are the hallmarks here. Let the light shine ever more...

It was always a delightful experience for me to visit BVM Holy Cross College, Cherpunkal. This college radiates with positive energy under the able, dynamic, visionary leadership of the Principal Rev. Fr George. I had the pleasure of interacting with the faculty of this college on two occasions. The faculty were deeply involved in keenly listening to the lectures and absorbing this with absolute sincerity. There are very many healthy practices followed in the college which require emulation by other institutions. I pray to Lord Infant Jesus to bestow his unbounded blessings on this great temple of learning.

Principal’s Message

PrincipalRev. Dr A.J.George Ampazhathumkal

It is said that “the weakest ink is stronger than the strogest

memory”. BVM Beats is the documentation of the memoires of the

academic year 2015-2016. Each of these events has a unique role in

moulding the destiny of the members of BVM family. Homi Bhabha,

Director of the Mahindra Humanities Centre at Harward University

and renowned Cultural Theorist opines that “Sans humanities,

the Centre of Indian Education doesn’t hold”. Many employers

in the corporate world feel that people trained just in technical fields cannot represent their

corporation as a whole, particularly not on a global level. We, at BVM give equal importance

to Arts, Culture, Communication, Outreach Programmes etc. for a holistic development.

This Beats gives a glimpse of these activities along with the teaching-learning process. The

year 2015-2016 was a boost for us to take up challenging ventures in the coming years. I

congratulate all my Team- mates for their dynamism. I gratefully acknowledge the services of

Ms Bhagyasree B. for the unflinching commitment she has shown in bringing out this maiden

issue. I extend my thanks to Mrs Amaladevi V.C. for her untiring support in this endeavour.

abode on 22 March 2015. We are proud to acknowledge this unique personality, who was our Principal from 2006 to 2015. His 9 year

tenure as the Principal of the college brought a matchless identity to the institution. The present name and fame of BVM Holy Cross College, Cherpunkal owes much to this great individual. A great scientist, an

erudite educationist, an efficient administrator, a perfect teacher… Titles are countless for Rev. Dr Mathew Maleparambil who was a continuous

Orientation Programme.

Mr Brijesh George John, Assistant Professor and Placement officer of Marian College, Kuttikanam conducted a Career Oriented Personality Development Progaramme. The interactive session, “How to get Placed” focused on the current job scenario and the various sectors in which more jobs are produced. He differentiated between unemployment and unemployability and made the students aware of the necessity to have both hard and soft skills to achieve a good career.A follow up of the programme was conducted on 20 July 2015 by Mr Brijesh himself.

On 11September, 2015 Mar Sleeva Parish Hall witnessed a session on “Exploring Ourselves” lead by Prof. Joby Cyriac, HOD of Hospitality Management Dept in Marian College, Kuttikkanam. Prof. Joby Cyriac started the session with a simple, but a very relevant question “What stops me from what I can be?”. The need of a bigger aim for a happy and successful life was made clear to the students and „small aim is a crime was made their motto. Through striking group and self-activities, the students were given a chance to look

back into their past, evaluate their present and chart a determined aim for their future. „The Me Chart, „ The life I want to Live and „The Goals To Be Fulfilled in the Three Years of College Life prepared by the students under the advice of Prof. Joby Cyriac, made them with a concrete and confident mindset.

Mr Jijo Chittadi during his talk.

Mr Robin Mathew, HR Consultant conducted an orientation class for the first year postgraduate students on 30 September 2015.The major topics of discussion were The need for having a goal How to Set a Goal? How to Achieve Goals? What are the Barriers of Goal Setting? How could one Achieve Success in Life? It helped the students to evaluate

He stated that the IT field prefers team to individual. Most of the companies need team-players. So he asked the job aspirants to learn to work as TEAM, as “Together Everyone Achieves More”. He highlighted the importance of developing a positive attitude that will help a person to achieve 100% in his life. Positive attitude is above hard work and skills.

1. Wealth without work.2. Pleasure without conscience.3. Knowledge without character.4. Commerce without morality.5. Science without humanity.6. Worship without sacrifice.7. Politics without principle.

Prof. Joby Cyriac, engages the session on “Exploring Ourselves”.

An inspiring motivation session was held on 13 October for First Years by Mr Jijo Chittadi. Mr Jijo started the session classifying the children into three: dull, smart and over smart. He listed the dull people as those who think of everything in a negative manner and are usually filled

with negative energy. He pointed out that being over smart is not always appreciable. Instead of being over smart, students should be smart enough and need not stay back.

VALUE CLARIFICATION SESSSIONS

COUNSELLING CENTRE

PTA

TEACHER- A MENTOR

Being a value-oriented college destined to form a generation of students with positive thoughts and blissful hearts, we formally organize Value Education Sessions for all students. Every Wednesday we spend 30 minutes in live discussion on social, moral, ecological and Gandhian values.

The Counselling Centre of BVM does a great work from the beginning of the academic year in mending the students. The three visiting Counsellors: Fr Mathew Panthalany, Fr John Mattamundayil and Sr Jismy FCC and the permanent Counsellor, Sr Annie Ancheril FCC work with utmost sincerity and dedication. Counselling empowers the students to face

life challenges and move ahead to achieve their academic goals. Students can freely approach any of the counsellors and get their help for solving their personal, academic, vocational and other allied problems. Counsellors spent 40 minutes to one hour for each student. During the year a total of 488 hours were spent on counselling.

Parent Teacher Association is very active since the inception of the institution. Sem-wise PTA meetings were conducted for all UG batches and Department meetings were held for

PG batches. A session on “New Age Parent” was engaged by Prof. Tommy Cherian, former Vice Principal of St. Thomas College, Pala. for the freshers and their parents.

A teacher at BVM is a mentor too. A mentor positively encourages his mentee and points out his strong areas. Teachers conducted individual and group mentoring formally during the academic year. Mentors were allotted for the students as per their preference.

From the PTA meeting.

The coat of Arms Professes the intellectual and spiritual aims the college signifies. The symbols on the emblem represent the church tower of the shrine of Infant Jesus Cherpunkal, a lamp, a dove, a pen and a book in descending order. The church tower symbolizes the presence and blessings of the Omniscient Almighty from the shrine of Infant Jesus opposite whom the college is situated. The lamp denotes the light of our Saviour Jesus Christ which enkindles us in our daily life. The dove represents the Holy Spirit which inspires and leads us to true wisdom and knowledge. The pen and the book symbolize

the teaching learning process in the college.

From the Reflective Writings on one of the best learning journals.

People we interact, events we witness, write ups we read etc. give us valuable insights when we pause and reflect on them. When we write up these reflective notes systematically, it becomes a learning journal. We at BVM, takes up this practice systematically with our learning journals. They serve as personal encyclopedia for future reference. The best learning journal from each class was given prizes on College Day.This is indeed a new feature in our curriculam.

FACULTY CORNER

FAREWELL TO TEACHERS

LEARNING SESSSIONS

TCI WORKSHOP

A teacher is a continuous learner. Learning sessions named “Thursday Sessions”, where each of the faculty was given a chance to excel in English Language were organized every week. Numerous sessions for Speeches, English Songs,Group Activities etc. were conducted by the Dept of English. Faculty

members spent 30 minutes to one hour on every first Friday to learn something new from fellow teachers. One faculty will elucidate on the recent developments in his/her area or introduce a new book.

As part of The Faculty Development Programme, Dr Thomas Abraham engaged sessions on Theme Centred Interaction (TCI) for the faculty of BVM on 24, 25 September and 3 October. The three days were fruitful and ever cherishable and the motto of the programme was “A teacher with a Difference in a College with a Difference.” TCI spends its 20th year in India ever since its arrival

from Europe. Dr Thomas Abraham had become the first accredited Indian TCI- graduate from Ruth Cohn Institute for TCI International and he is now a part of the “Teaching Staff for RCI India”. TCI with its gradual, but everlasting growth in India proved to be a living learning and a psychology, which grows its seekers. TCI advocates its aspirants:

“Be your own Chairperson. That means, be aware of yourself and your internal realities and your environment. Take each situation as an opportunity for your decisions. Give and take according to how you wish to be responsible for yourself and others.”

“Disturbances and strong involvements have precedence. Be aware of obstacles along your way, your own and those of others. If they are not dealt with, growth will be more difficult, even if it is possible.”Enhancing the quality of life and ensuring safety in abundance is the ultimate goal of TCI.

Participants and the Facilitator keenly observing when one of the participants speak during TCI workshop.

Welcome to the maiden endeavour of BVM. Being an academy heading towards professionalism, BVM BEATS

adds a new plume to the crown of BVM. Intended to immortalize the happenings of the college, this newsletter

would indeed be an appreciation for the top notches in various arenas. To set foot on an untrodden trail is

always a task that demands courage. The support of a strong pillar pushes us to take the leap. Having a head

of the institution in the zenith of novelty is such a bliss that we are forced to pounce upon the untried. We deem

it a privilege to express our heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Dr A.J. George Ampazhathumkal, Principal of our

college, who was instrumental in our success.

We also thank the faculty members of various departments for their support. Timely help always needs to be

cherished. We are really thankful to Asst Prof. Shintu Sebastian, Mr Sunny Thomas and Mr Deepu Jose for

their sincerity and concern.

Presenting with contentment, BVM BEATS, the pioneering effort from BVM.

Pleasant reading…

When Fr Sebastian Vayalil was made the Bishop, he gave priority for establishing educational institutions including St. Thomas College, Alphonsa College, St. Thomas Training College and hundreds of schools and vocational training institutes. Holy Cross is the symbol of Christianity. It symbolises all the sufferings we undertake for a noble cause. Christians believe that these sufferings are salvific. It is believed that St. Helena the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine found out the true cross (326-328A D) on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Churches celebrate the feast of the exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14 every year. Syro Malabar Catholics venerate Marthoma cross-the cross without the image of crucified Jesus. This cross symbolises the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Mar Sleeva- Syriac name of Holy Cross- church Cherpunkal was established in the year 1101 AD with a picture of Holy Cross brought from Persia which is still in the “Madhbaha” sanctuary. Holy Cross College got its name from the Holy Cross Church as the usual practice of maintaining the institutions of the Parish under the parish name.
