The Journeyof Jonah

Jonah 3:1-10 HCSB1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time:

2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach the message that I tell you.”

3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the Lord’s command. Now Nineveh was an extremely large city, a three-day walk.

4 Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed, “In 40 days Nineveh will be demolished!”

5 The men of Nineveh believed in God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in sackcloth—from the greatest of them to the least.

6 When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7 Then he issued a decree in Nineveh: By order of the king and his nobles: No man or beast, herd or flock, is to taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink water.

8 Furthermore, both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God. Each must turn from his evil ways and from the violence he is doing.

9 Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His burning anger so that we will not perish.

10 Then God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways—so God relented from the disaster He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.

…prayer ceases to be a vital part of a professing Christian’s life

…the quest for biblical truth ceases and one becomes content with the knowledge of Scripture already attained

…earnest thoughts about the reality of eternity and the eternal condition of my lost loved ones ceases to move me

…I do not rejoice with others when they experience the blessings of God, but instead secretly struggle with envy

Personal revival is needed when…

Page 10: Jonah 3 - Revival The Journey of Jonah

…aspirations for Christ-like holiness cease to dominate my life and thinking

…I can hear the Lord’s name used in vain and eternal issues used flippantly and not be bothered...I can watch degrading movies and television and read morally inappropriate literature and not be grieved in my heart and shut it off or walk away

…I find more delight in the promotion of discord than in working for unity and harmony among the Lord’s people

…injustice and human misery exist all around me and I do little or nothing to relieve it

Personal revival is needed when…
