Jonathan Law High School A Caring Community
October 2012 Volume 14, Number 2
From the Principal
Jonathan Law High School is a community that exists to maximize the intellectual, the social, and the emotional growth of each student in a safe, stable, supportive environment.
Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to fall! We have had an amazing start to our school year at Jonathan Law. I am so pleased to inform everyone that our students and staff have created a welcoming atmosphere for our new students and everyone is focused on their academics and activities. In addition to our freshmen class, I am so pleased to introduce our two new administrators: Mr. Paul Cavanna and Mrs. Pat Drew. Mr. Cavanna is the administrator for the Classes of 2013 and 2015 while Mrs. Drew will be the administrator for the Classes of 2014 and 2016. We also have welcomed several new faculty and staff! They have jumped right in and embraced the Jonathan Law tradition of support every student to strive towards excellence. Our recent Open House for current parents was a wonderful night to meet all the teachers and hear about the expectations for student learning. As you know, the best chance for a student’s success occurs when home and school work together to create a cohesive support system. Please remember that our teachers are available to answer any questions about their classes – whether by e-mail, phone or meetings. As well, our Parent Portal through Power School will allow you to continually monitor your child’s grades and assignments. Our CAPT scores have been mailed home. We are celebrating the success of last spring’s testing and we are working hard to ensure that our march towards academic excellence continues this year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime. I appreciate your continued support of Jonathan Law High School and I thank you for the honor of being your principal. Sincerely,
Mr. Fran Thompson

!!!!SMILE!!!!
The deadline for submission of Senior Portraits for printing in the Yearbook is fast-approaching; this date will be Tuesday, October
23rd. This means that if you have yet to schedule an appointment for your child, you should do so very soon.
Our official (and recommended) photographer is Photography by Roman, and he has recently sent home another mailing with
information about portrait sittings. If you chose Roman, he will be submitting your child’s chosen photo directly to me for the
yearbook. So, once your child has their photo taken with him, you do not need to worry about getting the photo to me. However, if
you use another photographer, it is you and your child’s responsibility to submit their photo for the yearbook to me by the
October deadline. These photos can be submitted on CD or in print, but the print must be professional and at least 4x6 in size.
If you cannot make it to Roman’s studio, he will be offering 2 sittings at Jonathan Law on Tuesday, October 2nd and Thursday,
October 11th. The sign-up sheet for these dates will be in the main office. For these sessions, the choices are limited to the following:
Formal Senior Portraits: 5-6 formal poses on traditional yearbook background. All poses are head and shoulders in length
specifically for the yearbook. 1 Outfit. $20.00 sitting fee.
Yearbook Only: 1 formal pose taken for the yearbook. No charge.
****Please see the form in the main office for more information on Roman’s offers****
If you wish to have other portraits taken, such as casual photos with outfit changes, you must make an appointment at the studio.
If you and your child wish to have their senior photo in the 2012-2013 yearbook, it is imperative you make the necessary
appointments and ensure your photo is submitted by the October deadline. No late submissions can be accepted. Please note: the
photo taken on Underclassmen portrait day (September 24th) CANNOT be used for seniors in the yearbook. It is for identification
purposes only.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected], or have your student find me in school.
Thank you,

I Would Like to Know More About ….
One of the primary goals of One Voice PTSA is to share information and to increase communication throughout the
high school community. In the past, we have hosted several interesting and excellent forums for parents, students, and
teachers in Milford. Your suggestions on this questionnaire will help us plan the discussion platform for the coming year.
Please tell us what you’d like to know more about and we will consider all ideas submitted to us.
We’ve listed a few topics to get things started – and we look forward to your thoughts. Thanks for your help!
Starting Your Financial Life: how to open a checking account, the importance of savings, the pros and cons of credit
cards, how to get a car loan, etc. This one was very well received by parents and students alike.
CAPT: – The scores, the process, and what it all means. The testing process for this state assessment is a little different
than what you may remember from elementary and high school. Learn all about it.
Naviance: a computerized system that assists a student’s goal-setting, college planning, and application process.
Students and parents need to sign up and use this tool – beginning in freshman year! Learn how.

One Voice PTSA Has a Solid Start; Survey Distributed – “What do you want to know more about?”
Initial Home Meetings 'Set the Stage' for 2012-13: On September 18th, parents and principals met at their 'home' schools for the first official school-based ONE VOICE Meetings. The groundwork was set for putting together a great year. In order to set our slate of presentations based on what you are looking for, we prepared a Survey and urge all parents to fill it out and send it in to the main office in an envelope marked ONE VOICE. A copy of the survey preceeds this newsletter. We will discuss the responses received at our October meeting. Membership Has Been Phenomenal – But We Need More: Wow!! We are thrilled with the level of interest in the ONE VOICE group -- and believe the fast pace of paid memberships is a great indication of this. Thank you for your support of this very important group.
Our work on gaining memberships is not done, though! ONE VOICE does not conduct any other fundraising so our membership dues are our only source of income. Please consider becoming a member of this very important group – adults/$10; students/$6.
Parent Involvement Opportunities: (in other words, HELP!): Here is the list of upcoming opportunities to volunteer. Please contact Kathy Bonetti ([email protected]) or Diane Zanghi ([email protected]) to let them know if you are able to help. Thanks!
Parent Conferences Membership Tables: Thursday, Oct. 4th and Friday, Oct. 5th. Adults needed to man the membership table, collect completed membership forms and collect membership dues. Daytime and evening opportunities available.
Next Meeting: Full membership Meeting (parents/students from BOTH schools): October 16th -- Held at Foran. 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Subject: Safe School Climate Plan AR-5131.911
Administrative Regulation
Milford Public Schools
The Milford Board of Education is committed to creating and maintaining a safe educational environment free from bullying, harassment and discrimination. In order to foster an atmosphere conducive to learning, the Board has developed the following Safe School Climate Plan, consistent with state law and Board Policy. This Plan represents a comprehensive approach to addressing bullying and cyberbullying and sets forth the Board’s expectations for preventing, intervening, and responding to incidents of bullying. Bullying behavior is strictly prohibited, and students who are determined to have engaged in such behavior are subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from school. The district’s commitment to addressing bullying behavior, however, involves a multi-faceted approach, which includes education and the promotion of a school atmosphere in which bullying will not be tolerated by students or school staff. For complete Bullying Policies, please refer to the link below in the Parent and Student Handbook at the Milford Board of Education Website:

New Billboards Throughout Milford
This Summer
A competition among ninth-graders at Jonathan Law High School resulted in billboard designs
supporting the mission of the Milford Prevention Council.
Seventy-seven students participated through their health classes, hoping to be one of the winners whose
art would be displayed on a CBS Billboard by Rita’s beginning in August with one per month through
December. The competition was part of the Alcohol Education Program brought to the health education
teachers and school administrators early in the school year.
The purpose was to bring awareness to the issue of underage drinking, a primary mission of the Milford
Prevention Council. Students were provided with statistics about underage drinking, making students aware that
many of their peers refrain from drinking until they are 21. Submissions were evaluated by three focus groups
at the Woodruff YMCA, students in the school, and members of a Milford Prevention Council committee.
Winners whose billboard designs will be displayed this summer are: Maren Sanchez, Phoebe Herbert,
Samantha Hudak, Jade Santana, Raeven Grant, Zack Rooney, an additional winner, was not able to attend
the photo session. The health teachers, along with school assistant principal, Robert Swan and Principal Mr.
Fran Thompson congratulated the students on a job well done.
