MEET YOUR CSO MUSICIANS
Born in Romania, violinist Calin Ovidiu Lupanu is the Concertmaster of the Charlotte Symphony.
What do you love most about being a professional musician?Sharing our music with other people makes us better understand each other. I strongly believe in live music – once you hear a really powerful performance, you are hooked.
If you could meet one composer, who would it be and what you ask him/her?Beethoven. I would love to say, “Thank you for your music!”
CALIN LUPANU concertmaster
Victor Wang is an alumnus of Yale University, where he earned both a Master of Music in flute performance and a Bachelor of Sciences in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology.
Why did you select your instrument?I was drawn to the richness and resonance in the sound. I got this flute when I was in 9th grade, and I love how it performs to this day!
Any pre-performance rituals?A banana and a good night’s sleep.
VICTOR WANGprincipal flute
Originally from Bulgaria, violinist Dima Dimitrova joined the Symphony in 2016.
Do you come from a musical family?Yes. My grandmother was a violinist, my mother a pianist, and my older sister began playing the violin four years before I did. We both ended up studying at the Juilliard School where we overlapped for two years and played together in a string quartet.
What do you love most about being a professional musician? I love that music has taken me around the globe and has given me the opportunity to meet people of many different cultures.

Originally from San Diego, CA, Brice Burton has played percussion since the age of 8 and is new to the CSO.
Does your instrument have a special story? My favorite snare drum I won as a prize in a competition.
If you could meet one composer, who would it be and what you ask him/her?I would like to meet Anton Bruckner. He had an incredible work ethic, but I would like to ask: What is the deal with only one cymbal crash in his 7th Symphony?
BRICE BURTONprincipal percussion
Peruvian-born cellist Marlene Ballena began playing at age 7 in her hometown of Lima. She joined the Symphony in 2014. What led you to the CSO?I served as a member of the Peruvian National Symphony and as principal cellist of the Piura Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, I was awarded a performance scholarship at the University of Louisville, where I earned by bachelor’s degree. I then continued my music studies at the Cleveland Institute, and in 2011, I was accepted into the performance residency program at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
MARLENE BALLENAcello
A Juilliard graduate, Tom Burge received a Queen Elizabeth II Award, and now lives and performs primarily in the US.
What do you love most about being a professional musician?Reaching people and connecting people, pure and simple. Through my travels with music, through performance, through teaching. It’s a very tough life, and there is a lot of work involved, but what a great way to spend my years on the planet.
What would most surprise people about you?Maybe that I can sing.
TOM BURGEtrombone
