Biography

Joshua Miles is one of the few young accomplished artists who left Cape Town for the purpose of extending on living a creative and fulfilling life. To this extent Joshua together with contemporaries have pioneered a new artists settlement at Baardskeerdersbos, with the living out their core values and creativity. Joshua captures the fresh Cape beauty in his impressionistic and delicate woodblocks, combining masterful cutting with Japanese style simplicity and crispness. The body of work is a departure from previous work through his being able to enlarge the previously smaller scale of his prints, translating his painted ‘impressionist’ brush marks into an expanded and expressive relief print medium. Joshua Miles attended Michaelis Art School (The University of Cape Town), where he received the coveted Michaelis Prize. He has exhibited his paintings and reduction wood cut prints widely in South Africa. Joshua attributes his interest in printing to watching his relative, art historian and artist Elza Miles, doing wood cuts when Joshua was a child, and later, to Cecil Skotnes who taught him the technical aspects of the medium at Michaelis. He lives and works in Baardskeerdersbos in the Overstrand.
