Dear TxSSAMT Members,

During our Winter Board of Directors meeting, we worked on some strategic planning for the future of our

state society. Most important to us was to find ways to sup-port our membership and encourage involvement. Please bear with us as we implement some of these ideas to reach our goals of providing you with avenues for professional and educational growth.

First, we are going to offer free CEU conferences to all members, non-members and students who pre-register online. We understand that some members are not reimbursed for time spent attending a conference. Since we travel around the state, this will hopefully provide local members with an opportunity for networking, education, and involvement with the state society. At each of the conferences, a member could obtain up to 16 lectures that are geared toward medical technology, laboratory topics, and patient care. If you are interested in presenting a lecture, there are additional credits that can be claimed for the CCP program. There are also two meals (Friday dinner social and Saturday lunch) provided at our cost.

Second, our journals will only be available online on the state society webpage. This will provide the state society the financial resources to provide the free conferences mentioned above. We feel that providing free CEU and meals during state conferences will benefit the members more than a printed journal magazine. Though we under-stand that many bring and read the paper journal to work, we hope that you will find the online journal provides the same versatility on your tablet or phone.

Lastly, we realized that there is a very low percentage of individuals who turn in the free CEU credits from our state journal. Obtaining quality articles has always been a struggle and Texas is the last state that was offering free credits in our journal. It was a hard decision, but we have decided to remove the free CEU articles from the journal. These articles are an optional journal component stated in the National Editors Manual, TxSSAMT Bylaws and TxSSAMT SOP.

It may appear that we are removing more than providing. National AMT has two journals that are published 3 times a year. TxSSAMT has two publications a year. There are multiple state and national conferences each year. There are many ways to obtain continuing education credit for the CCP program.

It is our goal to provide our membership options for continu-ing education, networking and leadership. We need people to actively join our committees and spread the word about our professions.

We created a TxSSAMT scholarship application that is posted to our website. If you are in school, please fill out an application to be considered for a scholarship award pre-sented during our Fall Conference and Business Meeting.

We are looking forward to a fabulous 2018 so please mark your calendars for these dates!

• Spring 2018 Conference will be May 4-5, 2018 in McKinney, Texas, hosted by Rocella Carlysle, RMA(AMT)

• National AMT Convention will be July 1-5, 2018 in Washington, DC

• Fall 2018 Conference will be October 12-13, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas hosted by Alfonso Clemmings, MT(AMT)

• Spring 2019 Conference will be March 28-April 1, 2019 with Carnival Cruise Lines Valor hosted by the TxSSAMT Board of Directors

• Fall 2019 Conference will be dates-TBA in Houston, Texas hosted by Dranette Murray, RMA(AMT)

All the best,

The Texas State Society has experienced several chang-es in the last year that effect our State Society budget

and processes. First, Centralized Banking has been fully implemented. Forms for check disbursement can be found on the AMT Website if needed, and all mileage reimbursements must include a Google Map as supporting documentation.

Our state journal, the “New Texan” is a large expense, costing over $2000 just to mail. Recent changes to the publication have freed up funds to provide FREE!!!! Registration to state conferences for all members who register via EZRegister at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Early registration is encouraged to help the Conference Chair prepare head counts for the facility. TxSSAMT will be trialing free conventions for the next year, and expect to continue this after the evaluation period.

Our budget remains balanced at this time, and a full report will be given at the next Business Meeting at the FREE!!!! Spring Conference in McKinney Texas.

Hope to see you there!

My name is Taffy K. Durfee and I am proud to be your new Central District Councilor. It will be a difficult job

to try to fill Randy Swopes’ shoes, but with his guidance, I promise to work hard to do so. He has always been an inspiration to me and someone who I could count on for help. My home is in Texas but I plan to try to visit each state in the Central District this year, to meet members in all state societies.

We will be having our 2018 Educational Program and National Meeting in Washington, D.C. on July 1st thru 5th and I hope to see each of you there. The hotel is the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill and it is within walking distance to many of the area attractions. Be sure to check out the Early Bird Registration form and get those completed soon to save some money.

The Magnolia Educational Treasures will be holding their 2018 joint meeting in Gulfport, Mississippi on October 20 and 21st at the Holiday Inn Gulfport Airport. If you have never been to one of these meetings, you are missing a lot of fun and education.

Don’t forget to check out the state society websites for publications, both current for meeting dates and their locations and past publications of up to two years for historical content.

Hope to see you soon.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil is used in just about every kind of beauty product and is a great first oil to start within the family of essential oils.

by Jill H. Gandy, B.S., MT (AMT)

Did You Know…

Bonus: Beauty Tip – Take a small mason jar (about 4 oz) and fill with over half way with Himalayan Pink Salt. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 4 drops of lavender oil. Mix well with spoon, and this all-natural exfoliating scrub can be used over the entire body. Rinse well and towel dry for renewed and softer skin.

Note: When purchasing any essential oils, you should look for the scientific name of genus and species along with lot numbers and expiration dates on the containers. Just like reagents, Eoils are quality controlled for potency and batch troubleshooting in case of a contamination incident. Also, make sure oils are packed in amber glass containers. Anything in plastic bottles may be diluted or lab manufactured which could produce a negative result for your symptoms.

Caution: Lavender essential oil closely mimics estrogen and should not be used if you have an estrogen-dependent cancer.

References Used: Essential Oils Natural Remedies: The Complete A-Z Reference of Eoils for Health and Healing; Fall River Press; Pages 384-385.

This oil is extracted from the flowers of the Lavandula plant by steam distillation. Since it comes from the flower, supply and demand can dictate the price of

this very popular oil.

This oil can be diffused or applied directly onto the skin. However, it is not edible. The main uses of Lavender are for skin conditions, as an antiseptic, and aromatically for relaxation.

1. Lip balms and sunburn treatments – Add 1 drop of Lavender oil per ounce of any Vaseline container, and mix well with a small spoon or wooden applicator. Great to use all over the body and portable.

2. Antiseptic for minor cuts, scrapes, bug bites, and bruising – Hold the essential oil container with your thumb and pointer finger and invert. Apply the neat oil to the newly cleaned wound. Cover if desired. Apply as often as needed.

3. Relaxation - Studies conducted on lab mice show that inhaling the Lavender oil’s vapors can help to prevent brain oxidative stress and improve cognitive impairment. To support the nervous system, diffuse it at home, inhale it directly from the bottle or apply it topically to the temples and back of neck. You can add a few drops to fractionated coconut oil to create a healthier massage experience.

Hello to All! Thank you for taking the time to submit the free CEs available to you in THE NEW TEXAN

journal. CEs from previous issues of the journal can also be submitted. Please remember that if the articles have the former CE Chair’s name on them, please send them to me. I have been achieving my turn-around goal, for you to get your graded results within 14 days, the majority of the time. If you have not received your graded results within that time period, please email me. Thanks to those of you already doing this. Here are a few observations:

1. Write legibly on all your papers – print, if possible. This is especially true for your email address.

2. Check your answers before mailing your answer sheets. Do not leave questions unanswered. You must get 80% to get a passing score. Re-read the question, ask your co-workers for their interpretation, and/or try to eliminate each incorrect answer. Guess if you must! Also, do not put multiple answers if the question is not asking for it.

3. If you do not have a personal email address, please let me know where to email your results to, otherwise, I will have to mail your results to you.

Your homework for today is to log onto the AMT website, then the TxSSAMT webpage and access THE NEW TEXAN via the publication link. If you have any issues, please let us know.

Our 2018 TxSSAMT Spring meeting will be in McKinney on the 4th and 5th of May. I hope to see you there!
