Special issue: applications of industrial ecology

Industrial ecology (IE) is one of the main themes ofthe Journal of Cleaner Production. The journal pub-lished a special issue on industrial ecology in 1997 with17 high quality article contributions. We are now pleasedto announce a special issue on Applications of Indus-trial Ecology.

Industrial ecology contributes to the aims and scopeof the journal. During the last decade, this emerging con-cept has generated lively debates that have an interdisci-plinary and an international focus and have includedresearchers, governmental actors and practitioners in thefield of sustainable development.

Some view industrial ecology as a new metaphoricparadigm for sustainable development, while othersadopt the concept as a practical tool for policy and forcorporate environmental management. There is a needto develop the concept of industrial ecology by compari-son with other approaches and tools discussed andapplied in cleaner production. The documented casestudies on industrial ecology remain only few in theliterature. Case studies have to be developed with aninternational perspective to communicate the experiencefrom different countries. The focus of this special issuewill be on practical applications of industrial ecologyand related approaches and tools in cleaner production,and how can these practical experiences and strategiescontribute to ecological, economic and social dimensionsof sustainable development.

Papers are invited in the following areas, but mayaddress any relevant focus that is related:

� Industrial ecology and eco-industrial park case studies� Industrial ecology and networking� Industrial ecology and corporate social responsibility� The role of industrial ecology in regional develop-

ment and environmental planning� Industrial ecology tools and indicators

Original research papers of 6000-12000 words sub-mitted to be considered for publication should bedirected to the editors at the address below.
