NOTE-WORTHY MUSIC STAMPS, PART 20

ARGENTINA. No. 2569. A stamp issuedApril 24, 2010 for the centenary of the BandaSinfónica de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires(Symphonic Band of the City of Buenos Aires). The Symphonic Band is not to be confused withthe Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra,established in the 1940s and formerly known asthe Symphony Orchestra of the City of BuenosAires. The Symphonic Band dates back to 1910.

It was formed on the initiative of AntoninoMalvagni as a way to celebrate the 100thanniversary of the May Revolution of 1810. Theband has performed continuously since 1910,reaching out to people of all ages and socialconditions, giving free concerts in halls and openspaces, and providing educational concerts in thecity schools. The stamp shows a 2002 photo ofthe Symphonic Band (notice that the band hascellos and basses, but no violins). Three otherdesign elements in the stamp are: a portrait ofthe band's founder Antonino Malvagni(1867-1943); a musical staff running across thebottom of the stamp, arrayed with images ofrepresentative instruments in the band; andfaintly printed on the right side of the stamp, anexcerpt from the score of Rimsky-Korsakov'sCapriccio Espagnol, op. 34, as arranged for bandby Malvagni. (Fig. 1)

AUSTRIA. No. 2256. A stamp issuedMay 18, 2010 for the 150th birth anniversary of

the Austriancomposer andconductor GustavMahler(1860-1911). One of the lastgreat symphoniccomposers inthe post-romanticAustro-German tradition, Mahler is best known forhis nine symphonies (a tenth was left unfinished)and his five orchestral song cycles. He was also aleading conductor of his day, serving as directorof the Vienna Opera from 1897 to 1907 andconductor of the New York Philharmonic from1909 to 1911. The stamp features a profilephotograph of the composer and a page ofmanuscript music, taken from a sketch for thefirst movement of Mahler's Fourth Symphony(Fig. 2). He began the Fourth Symphony in thesummer of 1899 and effectively completed thework the following summer, although hecontinued to revise it through the following April. (Most of Mahler's composing was done in thesummer months, when he was free from hisconducting duties.) The final movement of thesymphony incorporates the song "Das himmlischeLeben" for solo soprano, which he had composedin 1892 to words from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn." Mahler conducted the first performance of thesymphony in November 1901 in Munich.

AUSTRIA. A stamp issued June 26, 2010for the 350th birthday of Austrian composer andmusic theorist Johann Joseph Fux (1660-1741). Fux was born in Hirtenfeld near Graz. He heldimportant musical posts in Vienna, first asKapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral and lateras imperial court composer and Kapellmeister,serving under three Hapsburg emperors. Hiscatalogue of works includes around 80 masses,

many other sacred compositions, and numerousoperas. Fux was also known for his theoreticalworks. His "Gradus ad Parnassum," published in1725, is an important textbook of counterpoint. The stamp design features a watercolor paintingof Hirtenfeld (the village of his birth), a portrait ofFux, and musical notes that are an artisticrevision of a detail from his "Gradus adParnassum" (Fig. 3).

BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA. Two stamps andtwo sheets issued October 18, 2010 for the 200thbirth anniversaries of Frédéric Chopin(1810-1849) and Robert Schumann (1810-1856). The stamp for Chopin (Fig. 4) contains a portraitand the opening bars of his Etude, op. 10, no. 1,in C major. The sheet(not shown) has 8stamps with a tab inthe center. The tabfeatures a page fromthe score of Chopin'sBolero, op. 19, aportion of which is alsorepeated in the marginof the sheet.

The stamp for Schumann (Fig. 5) containsa portrait and the opening bars of his Valse noble,the 4th piece in the set Carnaval, op. 9. Composed in 1834-35, Carnaval is subtitledScènes mignonnes sur quatre notes (Little Scenes

on Four Notes). It isa collection of 21short piecesrepresenting maskedrevelers at theCarnival festival. The sheet (notshown) has 8stamps and a tab,with decorativenotes in the margin.

BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA (SerbAdmin.). No. 385. A stamp issued March 1,2010 for the 200th birth anniversary of FrédéricChopin (1810-1849). The stamp features an1849 daguerreotype portrait of Chopin. Thestamp background shows hands on a keyboardand a small excerpt from the autograph score ofChopin's Etude, op. 10, no. 3, in E major (Fig. 6).

Composed in 1832, thiswork has a well-knownmelody that has beenadapted many times forpopular songs and otheruses.

BRAZIL. Onestamp in a set of fourissued September 7, 2010as part of a series ofstamps issued by membersof the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain andPortugal (UPAEP) with the 2010 theme of NationalSymbols. The national anthem stamp has severalbars of the melody, shown behind a baton (Fig.7). The music was composed in 1822 byFrancisco Manoel da Silva (1795-1865). It served

first as national anthemin the imperial period; in1890 it was adopted asnational anthem of therepublic. There were noofficial words, however,until 1922, when a poemwritten in 1909 byJoaquim Osório DuqueEstrada (1870-1927)was adopted.

BULGARIA. No. 4535. A sheet of two

stamps and two labels issued March 1, 2010 forthe 200th birth anniversary of Frédéric Chopin(1810-1849). The background notation on thestamps and labels shows the first page of theautograph score of Chopin's Prelude, op. 28, no.15. Chopin completed his set of 24 preludes in1839 during his stay on Majorca with GeorgeSand. He had patterned the scheme after J.S.Bach's set, with each piece in a different key. George Sand described a terrible storm on theisland, which may have given rise to the title"The Raindrop" for the Prelude no. 15, in D-flatmajor. Larger notes on the sheet itself are fromthe printed score of another piece -- Chopin'sWaltz, op. 18, in E-flat major (Grande ValseBrillante), composed in 1831. The stamps alsocontain a portrait of Chopin, and the labels showhands at a keyboard (Fig. 8).

BULGARIA. No. 4544. A sheet of twostamps and two labels issued June 8, 2010 forthe 150th anniversary of the birth of theBulgarian musician Emanuil Manolov(1860-1902). Manolov was a teacher andconductor as well as composer. Following twoyears of study at the Moscow Conservatory, he

returned to Bulgaria. In 1899 he composed thefirst Bulgarian opera, "Siromahkinya" (The poorwoman), to his own libretto based on a poem byIvan Vasov. His other works include chambermusic, choral works, and children's songs. Hispatriotic song "Hubava si, Tatkovino" (My lovelyfatherland) is shown on the background of thesheet in a 3-part choral version and on thestamps and labels in an orchestral version. Aportrait of the composer is shown on the stamps,and two typical country girls are pictured on thelabels (Fig. 9).

BULGARIA. No. 4545. A sheet of twostamps and two labels issued June 8, 2010 forthe 200th anniversary of the birth of RobertSchumann (1810-1856). A central figure ofmusical Romanticism, Schumann composed works

in many genres, but his contributions are ofspecial importance in the fields of piano musicand song. The music on the background of thesheet is taken from the first movement ofSchumann's Symphony no. 1 in B-flat major, "The Spring Symphony." The music on thestamps and labels is too small to identify. Itappears to be orchestral music, possibly inmanuscript. A portrait of the composer is shownon the stamps, and a portrait of Schumann's wife,Clara Wieck, is shown on the labels (Fig. 10)

CHAD. One in a series of souvenir sheetsissued in 2010 for the 200th birthday of FrédéricChopin. The stamp shows a portrait of Chopinby Ary Scheffer and a portrait of Delfina Potcka (aPolish countess and friend of Chopin). Thebackground of the sheet reproduces the last pageof the autograph score of Chopin's Ballade no. 2,op. 38, in Fmajor, onwhich issuperimposed theportrait ofChopin byDelacroix(Fig. 11). ThisBalladewascomposedin 1839and dedicated to Robert Schumann. In 1918 themanuscript score was donated to the library ofthe Paris Conservatoire by Camille Saint-Säens,who had purchased it from a book dealer. Thelower corner of the final page contains the namesof other previous owners of the manuscript. Theentire autograph score, now owned by theBibliothèque nationale de France, has beenpublished in a facsimile edition.

CHINA, PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF. Nos.3838-3841. A set of four stamps issued July 25,2010 to honor Bach, Haydn, Mozart, andBeethoven. Each stamp features a large portraitof thecomposer,with afragment ofmanuscriptmusicprintedfaintly in thebackground(Fig. 12).

The Bach stamp shows the autograph manuscriptof "Der Tag, der ist so freudenreich," from theOrgelbüchlein, a collection of 46 organ chorales. The Haydn stamp is reported to be from a stringquartet in C major. Nine of Haydn's 68 stringquartets are in C major, and at the time of thiswriting I have not identified which one is shownon the stamp. The Mozart stamp shows anautograph excerpt from Act II of his opera "LeNozze di Figaro," first performed in 1786. Andfinally, the music on the Beethoven stamp istaken from an autograph sketch for the lastmovement of his Ninth Symphony, op. 125.

COLOMBIA. No. 1328f. One stamp in asheet of 12 issued January 28, 2010 to honorfamous personalities. It features the Colombianmusician Adolfo Mejía Navarro (1905-1973). Born into a musical family, Mejía studied at musicschools in Cartagena and in Bogotá and later for abrief time with Charles Koechlin in Paris. As aguitarist and conductor, Mejía had an activecareer in both the popular and classical musicfields. His experience abroad included two yearsin New York, working for the Columbia and Victorrecord labels and for NBC, and several yearstouring in Europe, Brazil, and the United States. He also achieved fame as a composer, chiefly ofworks based on popular urban musical styles ofhis country. His most ambitious work is the"Pequeña Suite," anorchestral piece basedon Colombian dancemotives and rhythms. A collection of hispiano pieces waspublished after hisdeath, but most of hisworks remainunpublished. In 1945he returned toCartagena, where hehelped establish the Pro-Arte Musical Society. He received the National Music Prize and anhonorary doctorate from the University ofCartagena in 1970. The stamp contains a portraitof Mejía and a page of his music (Fig. 13). Thetitle of the music is given on the stamp, but Icannot decipher it from the illustration. [Note:Biographical sources list Mejía's year of death as1973, but the stamp gives it as 1976.]

CUBA. One stamp in a set of four issuedin the 2010 UPAEP series of National Symbols. Cuba's national anthem stamp features anautograph manuscript of the melody and words(Fig. 14). The anthem, "Himno de Bayamo," wasfirst sung during the Battle of Bayamo, a Cubanuprising against Spain in 1868. The words andmusic are by Pablo Figueredo (1819-1870). Figueredo played a leading part in the Battle ofBayamo. He was captured by the Spaniards andwasexecuted bya firingsquad in1870. It issaid thatjust beforethe firingsquadexecutedhim,Figueredoshouted oneof the linesfrom theanthem: "Morir por laPatria esvivir" (Todie for theFatherlandis to live). The national anthem is a popular subject onCuban stamps. It appeared also in 1952, 1970,and 1976.

ECUADOR. Onestamp in a set ofthree issued inthe 2010 UPAEPseries of NationalSymbols. Ecuador'snational anthemstamp featuresthe opening barsof the melody(Fig. 15). Theopening words are "Salve, oh Patria, mil veces! "(Hail Fatherland, a thousand times hail). Thelyrics were written in 1865 by

the poet Juan León Mera (1832-1894), at the request of the Ecuadorian Senate. The music wascomposed in the same year by Antonio Neumane(1818-1881). Although the song has beenwidely performed since 1865, it was not formallyadopted as the national anthem until 1948.

FINLAND. No. 1347d. Onestamp on a sheet of5 issued January 25,2010 for St.Valentine's Day, witha theme of fairies. Each stamp shows afairy in a distinctivepose -- with stars,butterflies, hearts,flowers, or music. The music fairy isplaying a violin,surrounded by aswirling staff ofdecorative musicalnotes (Fig. 16).

GAMBIA. No.3296. A miniature sheetissued April 15, 2010 forthe 75th birthday of ElvisPresley. Each of thefour stamps features aportrait of Presley withunidentified music in thebackground (Fig. 17).

GAMBIA. Twosheets issued August 26,2010 for the 200thbirthday of Robert Schumann (1810-1856). Theminiature sheet contains four stamps withSchumann portraits and illustrations relating tohis life (Fig. 18) . The souvenir sheet (notshown) contains one stamp. The background ofboth sheets contains a portrait of Schumann andthe opening notes of "Soldatenmarsch," thesecond piece in his "Album für die Jugend," op.68. Writing to a friend about this collection ofshort piano pieces for children, Schumann saidthat these pieces "in particular

had a special place in my heart and were takendirectly from my family life."

GIBRALTAR. No. 1256. One of fourstamps issuedNovember 26,2010 forChristmas. Thedesign featuresthree snowmenmusicians, withtwo sets ofdecorative noteshovering in the airabove them (Fig.19).

GREAT BRITAIN. A set of stamps issuedin various formats on November 2, 2010 forChristmas. The stamps feature the much-lovedanimated movie characters, Wallace and Gromit. Wallace is a cheese-loving, absent-mindedprofessor, and Gromit is his intelligent but

misunderstood hound. Two of the stampspicture Wallace andGromit singing from acarol book. The notesshown in the book donot represent actualsongs, according toinformation receivedfrom the stampdesigner (Fig. 20).

GREECE. Nos. 2441-2446. A set of sixstamps issued September 16, 2010 featuringpopular Greek music. These six musicians arepictured: Giorgos Zambetas (1925-1992),Vassilis Tsitsanis (1915-1984), Stelios Kazantzidis(1931-2001), Grigoris Bithikotsis (1922-2005),Vicky Moscholiou (1943-2005), and Sotiria Bellou(1921-1997). The background of each stampshows an unidentified excerpt from the samemusical manuscript (Fig. 21).

GRENADA. Nos. 3767-3768. Two sheetsissued September 1, 2010 for the 200th birthdayof Frédéric Chopin. The miniature sheet (Fig. 22)contains four stamps (two portraits of thecomposer, one of George Sand, and a picture ofChopin's birthplace) and a profile portrait. In thebackground is a reproduction of the last page ofthe autograph score of Chopin's Ballade no. 2, op.38, in F major.The souvenirsheet (notshown) hasone stampwith a portraitof thecomposer. Decorativenotes adornboth thestamp and thebackground onthe sheet.

GUINEA. Two sheetlets and two souvenirsheets issued May 10, 2010 honoring famouscomposers. Each of the sheetlets contains ninestamps. The first sheetlet (Fig. 23) honors thesecomposers: Johannes Brahms, Joseph Haydn,

Leonard Bernstein, Leos Janácek, RichardWagner, Arnold Schönberg, Carl Nielsen, MauriceRavel, and Johann Strauss (Father). Anunidentified keyboard score forms a continuousbackground on the stamps.

The second sheetlet (Fig. 24) honors: AntoninDvorák, Béla Bartók, Claude Debussy, DmitriSchostakovich, Hector Berlioz, G. F. Handel, J. S.Bach, Franz Liszt, and Johann Strauss (Son). Inthis case, two unidentified pages of music formthe background.

One of the two souvenir sheets (not shown)contains decorative notes in the margin, below ascene from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story"and a stamp for Béla Bártok.

GUINEA. Nos. 3304-3305. Two sheetsissued July 12, 2010 for the 200th birthday ofRobert Schumann. The miniature sheet (notshown) contains six stamps with portraits of Liszt,Chopin, Mendelssohn, Nils Gade, Wagner, andMahler, and decorative notes in the background. Thesouvenirsheet(Fig.25)featuresa stampwith aportraitofSchumann,alongwith asceneand unidentified music in the background.

GUINEA BISSAU. Two sets of sheetsissued July 12, 2010 and August 3, 2010 for the200th birthday of Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849). The first set includes a souvenir sheet with apage fromthe score ofChopin'sEtude, op.10, no. 1, inC major,composed in1830,during hisWarsawyears (Fig.26).

The secondset has aminiature sheet of five stamps, three of whichcontain music (Fig. 27). The 700Fr stamp showsChopin's Nocturne, op. 9, no. 1, in B-flat minor,and the 800Fr stamp shows his Etude, op. 10, no.3, in E major. The music on the 450Fr stamp isnot identified. Finally, the souvenir sheet in thesecond set (not shown) contains a stamp with anunidentified Nocturne on the piano rack.

HUNGARY. No. 4152. A sheet issuedMarch 26, 2010 for the bicentenary of FerencErkel's birth. Born into a family of notableHungarian musicians, Ferenc Erkel (1810-1893) was a composer, conductor, and pianist. In 1837he became the first conductor at the HungarianTheatre of Pest, later the National Theatre. Heheld this post until his retirement in 1874 asgeneral music director, retaining this title at thenewly formed Hungarian Opera House. Hegradually withdrew from regular conducting, and

in 1875 helped found the Academy of Music inBudapest in 1875, where he was the director andtaught piano until 1888. As a composer, he isremembered chiefly for his operas and otherstage works. In 1840 he composed his firstopera, "Bátori Mária." This was followed by ninemore operas, the most notable of which was

"Bánk Bán," first performed in 1861. In 1844Erkel won the competition to set Ferenc Kölcsey's"Himnusz" to music, a song that was adopted asthe Hungarian national anthem. The openingwords (in English translation) are "O Lord, blessthe nation of Hungary." Since it is a prayer, it ismore solemn than many other national anthems. An excerpt from the manuscript for this music isfeatured on the postal sheet, along with a portraitof Erkel, a picture of the Opera House, and achess board (to signify his skill as a chess player). (Fig. 28)

INDIA. One of three stamps issuedDecember 3, 2010 to commemorate the 2010Music and DanceFestival "Brahma GanaSabha." The stampspicture three Indianmusicians, one of whomis ThiruvaduthuralRajarathinam Pillai(1898-1956). KAZAKHSTAN. A stamp issued August24, 2010 for the 175th anniversary of the birth ofMusa Baizhanuly(1835-1929). He isknown both as amusician and a poet. He traveled from onevillage to another,singing lyric songs andsongs glorifying hisnative land. They wereusually accompanied bythe dombra. Known bythe nickname "Zhayau Musa," he was also a poet,who left a rich literary heritage for his people. The stamp features a portrait of Musa Baizhanuly,with an unidentified song (melody and words) inthe background. (Fig. 30)

KAZAKHSTAN. A stamp issued October28, 2010 for the 200th birthday of FrédéricChopin. It features aportrait of the composer. The stamp backgroundshows an excerpt fromthe autograph manuscriptof sketch fragments ofhis Sonata in G minor,op. 65, for piano andcello. It is a very latework, showing signs ofthe direction in whichChopin's style might havedeveloped, had he livedbeyond the age ofthirty-nine (Fig. 31). The margins of theminiature sheet of 10stamps (not pictured) show part of the autographmanuscript for Chopin's Mazurka in C major, op.33, no. 3. The set of four mazurkas, op. 33, werecomposed in 1837-38.

KOREA, DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'SREPUBLIC OF. A souvenir sheet issued July 1,2010 showing azaleas in full bloom and themelody of a song, presumably about azaleas. Thesong and its composer and lyricist have not beenidentified. (Fig. 32)

KOREA, DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'SREPUBLIC OF. A souvenir sheet issued July 5,2010, featuring the melody and words of thenational anthem, along with the flag and emblem

of the DPRK. Mt. Paektu, the sacred mountain ofthe revolution, is pictured in the background. The song's title, "Aegukka" (Patriotic Song) is thesame as that of the South Korean nationalanthem, and the two anthems have a somewhatsimilar melody. The words, however, aredifferent. The North Korean anthem wascomposed in 1947 by Kim Won-gyun(1917-2002), and the words were written by PakSe-yong (1902-1989). (Fig. 33)

KOREA, DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'SREPUBLIC OF. A sheetlet with four stampsissued August 25, 2010 for the 50th anniversaryof the Songun Revolutionary Leadership of KimJong II. The four stamps contain art worksportraying revolutionary activities. The right sideof the sheetlet features a martial song of the(North) Korean People's Army titled "We WillDefend the Headquarters of Revolution with OurLives," composed in 1955 by Cho Kyong-jun. KOREA, DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'SREPUBLIC OF. A sheetlet with five stampsissued September 10, 2010 for the 60thanniversary of the entry of the Chinese People'sVolunteers (CPV) into the Korean War. A labelcontains the melody of "The Military Song of CPV,written in 1950 by the Chinese composer ZhouWeizhi (b.1916), with words by Ma Fuyao. (Fig.35)

LATVIA. A set of three stamps andthree miniature sheets issued November 12, 2010in anticipation of the 100th anniversary ofLatvian independence. One of the stampsfeatures the words of the Latvian nationalanthem, "Dievs sveti Latviju!" (God bless Latvia).

The accompanying miniature sheet contains 8stamps and a large label that has musicalnotation of the song behind the words. The labeland the stamps also picture Karlis Baumanis(1835-1905), who wrote the words and themusic. The song was first performed publicly in1873 at a singing festival and was sung at theLatvian independence ceremonies in 1918. It

was proclaimed the national anthem in 1920, butwas suppressed in 1940 when Latvia became partof the Soviet Union. In 1990 it was restored asthe official national anthem of Latvia. (Fig. 36)

MACEDONIA. Nos. 523-524. Two stampsissued June 8, 2010 for the 200th birthanniversaries of Robert Schumann and FrédéricChopin. TheSchumannstamp featuresa portrait, aclose-uppicture of apianokeyboard, andan excerptfrom anunidentifiedpiano score(Fig. 37). TheChopin stampfeatures a brush drawing of Chopin's head andtwo decorative notes in front of the words "Thethree musketeersAlexandre Dumas." Chopin was a friend ofAlexandre Dumas,père, author of thehistorical novel, "TheThree Musketeers." For a time they bothlived in the Squared'Orléans, a littleenclave in Paris. Irene Lawford hassuggested thisconnection betweenChopin and "TheThree Musketeers": there is a Disneyvideo of the Dumasbook that incorporates the music to Chopin'sPrelude, op. 28, no. 15 ("The Raindrop"). (Fig.38)

part of the stamp. The music seems to be theIntroduction and Polonaise for violoncello andpiano, op. 3. Chopin composed the Polonaise inthe fall of 1829 while visiting Prince Radziwall athis estateat Antonin. He wrote itfor adaughter ofthe princeand for herfather,adding theslowintroductionlater. (Fig.39)

NORWAY. No. 1603. One of two stampsissued February 5, 2010 for the birth bicentenaryof two famous Norwegians: the historian PeterAndreas Munch and the violinist and composerOle Bull. Ole Bornemann Bull (1810-1880) was aworld-renowned violinist, who gave hundreds ofconcerts in Europe and the United Statesthroughout his active and successful career. Hewasacquaintedwith some ofthe leadingmusicians ofthe 19thcentury,includingEdvard Grieg,RobertSchumann,Franz Liszt,and FelixMendelssohn.Schumann praised Ole Bull's violin playing for itsbeautiful tone and considered him to be morethan Paganini's equal in technical feats, such asthe ability to play four parts at once. Bull was agreat supporter of Norwegian culture and art,helping to establish a Norwegian national theatre. He was also a composer; most of his works,though, remain unpublished. One such work ishis "Grüss aus der Ferne," for violin andorchestra, which survives in incomplete form.

It was composed in 1841 while traveling inPrague. An autograph page of the violin part isshown on the stamp, behind a portrait of Ole Bulland a smaller picture of him playing the violin. (Fig. 40)

PARAGUAY. A stamp issued in the 2010UPAEP series of National Symbols. Paraguay'snational anthemstamp features abanner on which arewritten the words tothe refrain of the"Himno Nacional." Several decorativenotes are on the side. The words werewritten by FranciscoEsteban Acuña deFigueroa, who alsowrote the words tothe Uruguayannational anthem. There is some disputeabout who wrote the music. The anthem wasadopted in 1846, and the arrangement byRemberto Giméniz was declared the officialversion in 1934. (Fig. 41)

PERU. Astamp issued in2010 for the200th birthanniversary ofFrédéric Chopin. In the center ofthe stamp is aportrait of Chopin,surrounded bydecorativeelements, amongwhich are a circling keyboard, two treble clefsigns, and two decorative eighth notes. (Fig. 42)

PHILIPPINES. One stamp in a set offour issued November 10, 2010 in its NationalArtists series. It honors Levi Celerio,(1910-2002), a composer and lyricist with over4,000 songs to his credit. In 1997 he wasawarded the title of National Artist for Music andLiterature by Philippines President Fidel Ramos,

who cited him for writing music "that was aperfect embodiment of the heartfelt sentimentsand valued traditions of the Filipino." He also hasthe distinction of being recognized by theGuinness Book ofWorld Records asbeing the onlyleaf player in theworld. The stamppictures himplaying not a leafbut a violin, withan unidentifiedmusical excerptin thebackground. (Fig. 43)

PORTUGAL. No. 3180-3183. A set oftwo stamps and two souvenir sheets issued March1, 2010 for the 200th birth anniversaries ofFrédéric Chopinand RobertSchumann. TheChopin stamp(Scott 3180)features a portraitof the composerwith faint notes inthe background,which are anexcerpt from theautograph scoreof Chopin's Waltzno. 9, op. 69, no.1, in A-flat major. Subtitled "L'adieu," it wascomposed in 1835 and dedicated to MariaWodzinska, the daughter of a noble Polish family,whom Chopinsoughtunsuccessfullyto marry (Fig.44).

The Schumannstamp (Scott3181) alsofeatures aportrait of thecomposer withfaint notes in

the background, but in this case the music hasnot been identified (Fig. 45). The souvenir sheet(not shown) pictures Schumann at a deskexamining a sheet of unidentified music.

QATAR. Astamp issued in2010 to celebrateArab culture. Itfeatures a musicalinstrument(perhaps a lute)along withdecorative notesand musicalsymbols. (Fig. 46)

SERBIA. No. 502. A stampissued March 1, 2010 for the 200th birthday ofFrédéric Chopin. It features a portrait of Chopinand the image of an old piano. In thebackground is an excerpt from LeopoldGodowsky's arrangement of Chopin's Etude, op.10, no. 2 in A minor. These "Studies on Chopin'sEtudes" are renownedfor their technicaldifficulty. In the caseof this etude,Godowsky moved thechromatic 16th-notepassage from the righthand to the left handand titled the work"Ignis Fatuus" (will-o'-the-wisp) (Fig.47). The stamp is alsoissued on a sheet witha label between thestamps that contains an excerpt from Chopin'soriginal version of the Etude, op. 10, no. 2.

SLOVAKIA. A stamp issued November12, 2010 for Christmas. It is a beautifulreproduction of an illuminated initial from anearly 14th-century liturgical manuscript -- thecelebrated Bratislava missal 1, which is preservedin fragments found in various archives inBratislava and Trnava. A miniature painting ofthe Nativity scene is contained in the letter P (theinitial letter of the Christmas introit "Puer natus

est"). The stampalso shows some ofthe surrounding textand early chantnotation. Theparchment sheet thatcontains this paintingis found in theBratislava TownMuseum. (Fig. 48)

ST. THOMAS& PRINCE ISLANDS. A souvenir sheet anda miniature sheetissued September 2, 2010 for the 200th birthanniversary of Robert Schumann. The souvenirsheet has music both on the stamp and on thesheet itself. Allof the excerptsare fromSchumann'sFantasiestücke,op. 12, no. 1,"Des Abends,"composed in1837 (Fig. 49). The music alsoappears on theminiature sheet(not shown).

SURINAME. A sheet with two stampsissued in 2010 in the UPAEP series with thetheme of National Symbols. One of the stampscontains the words and melody of the nationalanthem of Suriname, "God zij met onsSuriname!" (God be with our Suriname). The

words are based on a song written in 1893 byCornelis Atses Hoekstra that had been set to apiece of music written in 1876 by JohannesCorstianus de Puy. In 1959, whenself-government was granted, the words wererevised by the poet Henry de Ziel, whose penname was Trefossa. (Fig. 50)

SWITZERLAND. No. 1368. A stampissued March 4, 2010 to commemorate the 550thanniversary of the founding of the University ofBasel. Established in 1460, it is Switzerland'soldest and largest university. The stamp designis a swirling vortex of symbols that represent theuniversity's multi-faceted scholarly and researchendeavors in the sciences, medicine,mathematics, the humanities, and law. Musicalsymbols are included. (Fig. 51)

TOGO. Four se-tenant stamps and asheet issued July 15, 2010 for the 200thanniversary of the birth of Robert Schumann(1810-1856). Each stamp has a portrait ofSchumann and another picture relating toSchumann's life. A continuous design runningacross the background of all four stamps shows apiano keyboard, treble and bass clef signs, andseveral decorative notes (Fig. 52). The sheet(not shown) has a stamp and a larger portrait ofSchumann. It also shows four instruments andthe interior of a concert hall. Running diagonallyacross the top of the sheet are musical staveswith unidentified notes.

URUGUAY. Two se-tenant stamps issuedNovember 8, 2010 in the UPAEP series with the2010 theme of National Symbols. The twostamps together form a single design showing theUruguayan flag, coat of arms, and the chorus ofthe national anthem. The words, written byFrancisco Esteban Acuña de Figueroa, begin"Orientale, la Patria o la tumba!" (Easternlandsmen, our country or the grave). The music,

composed by the Hungarian-born Francisco JoséDebali, is operatic in nature. Written in 1845, theanthem was officially adopted in 1848. (Fig. 54)

VATICAN CITY. A set of two stamps anda sheetlet issuedSeptember 20, 2010for the Chopin andSchumann birthbicentenaries. TheChopin stamp featuresa portrait and excerptfrom his Nocturne, op.15, no. 3 in G minor,composed in 1833 (Fig.55).

The companionSchumann stampfeatures a portrait of

Schumann and anexcerpt from his ValseNoble, op. 9, no. 4 (Fig.56). The sheetlet hassmall portraits of Chopinand Schumann and alarge tab that containsthe opening page ofChopin's Nocturne, op. 9,no. 2 in E-flat major,composed 1830-31. (Fig. 57)

VIETNAM. A stamp issued February 22,2010 for the 200th birth anniversary of FrédéricChopin. The stamp design features a portrait ofChopin, a piano keyboard, and the opening barsof his Ballade, no. 1, op. 23, in G minor,completed in 1835 and published the followingyear. Although the term "ballade" suggests aliteraryassociation,Chopin'sballades do nothave any directprogrammaticconnotation inthe sense thatSchumann'sworks have. Chopin's piecesare to beunderstood in purely musical terms. (Fig. 58)

HAPPY 200 BIRTHDAY TO FRANZ LISZTTH

In 2011, the music world commemorating the 200 anniversary of the birth andth

the 125 anniversary of the death of composer and virtuoso Franz Liszt. Lisztth

became renowned in Europe during the nineteenth century for his virtuosi skill asa pianist. He was said by his contemporaries to have been the most technicallyadvanced pianist of his age. In the 1840s he was considered by some to beperhaps the greatest pianist of all time. He was also a well-known composer,piano teacher, and conductor. He was a benefactor to other composers.

As a composer, Liszt was one of the most prominentrepresentatives of the "Neudeutsche Schule" ("NewGerman School"). He left behind an extensive anddiverse body of work in which he influenced hisforward-looking contemporaries and anticipatedsome 20th-century ideas and trends. Some of hismost notable contributions were the invention of the symphonic poem,developing the concept of thematic transformation as part of his experimentsin musical form and making radical departures in harmony.

BEARDEN

Bearden is celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to

collage along with his work in watercolors, oils, and other

media. The four collages by Bearden as they appear on the

stamp sheet are: Conjunction (1971), Odysseus: Poseidon,

The Sea God—Enemy of Odysseus (1977), Prevalence of

Ritual: Conjur Woman (1964) and Falling Star (1979). Art

director Derry Noyes chose a different work by Bearden for

each of the four stamp designs.
