Definition of Enterprise Architecture 3

¨  Set of models and perspectives that represent multiple aspects of an Enterprise ¤ Usually called frameworks

n  i.e. The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) ¤ Has multiple layers and multiple stakeholder views

n  Typically Business, Process, Integration, Software & Infrastructure Layers

n  Typically

¨  A business unit typically within CIO’s Office ¤ Can be called Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM)

¨  A strategic approach to rationalize and align IT capability with enterprise mission, business strategy and business goals.

Essence of Work [1]Farwick, et. al, “….. Automated Integration of Infrastructure Cloud in EAM”

¨  Problem Statement ¤ Analyzing how IT aligns with business goals is inefficient and

even faulty because up-date and accurate information about as-is IT environment is too difficult to gather and keep up-to-date.

¤  Bigger problem for Cloud Computing given the ease of change.

¨  Their Contribution ¤ Created a conceptual approach to solve information

integration problem ¤  Introduced “prototypical” implementation

¨  Hypotheses (not tested) ¤  This would minimize manual work needed to keep IT model

up-to-date and improve analysis

Essence of Work [1] Farwick, et. al, “….. Automated Integration of Infrastructure Cloud in EAM”

¨  Conceptual approach is federated and tool independent based on central model with versioning capability and an extensible meta-model.

Research [1] Farwick, et. al, “….. Automated Integration of Infrastructure Cloud in EAM”

¨  Defined an Usage Scenario and run-time information needed.

¨  Defined prototypical implementation ¤ Picked real-life tools. ¤ Described creation of Central Model Controller and

WSDL APIs, push-pull model, and pool frequency ¤ Resolved issues with tagging instances with UUIDs.

¨  Walked-though possible execution of Usage Scenario.

What Was Not Explained Well [1] Farwick, et. al, “….. Automated Integration of Infrastructure Cloud in EAM”

¨  “Various Runtime information” ¤ Why is state information valuable for EAM? What other

Information is needed? ¨  No explanation for importance of planned information

from project tool. ¤  I think it is important for creating unique instance IDs which ties

instances to business need.

¨  No justification for tool selection, possible limitations and relevancy to most popular tools & technology

¨  Validity of Usage Scenario and its relevancy to EA ¨  Did prototypical implementation work? How did they

measure?

Future Work [1] Farwick, et. al, “….. Automated Integration of Infrastructure Cloud in EAM”

¨  Implement and evaluate other cloud integration approaches

¨  Usage of generic Cloud APIs

¨  Other types of Clouds….PaaS, SaaS ¨  Synchronization issues and meta-model evolution ¨  Integration of various other runtime IT environments using

Agent based approach

Essence of Work [2]Lange & Mendling, "An Experts' Perspective on EA Goals, Framework Adoption and Benefit Assessment”

¨  Research Objectives ¤  To provide real word understanding of EA Goals, Framework

Adoption and Benefit Assessment that up to now has been mostly academic discussions.

¤ Validate goals most often mentioned in literature. ¤  Establish theoretical foundations for the goals companies

seek in practice. ¤  Identify modeling techniques being used and how benefit

assessments are done. ¨  Their Contribution

¤ Defined four goal classes with a distinct focus for modeling and the beginning of a maturity model.

¤ Discovered that EA benefit assessment varies with goal classes and there is little real-world practice.

Research [2]Lange & Mendling, "An Experts' Perspective on EA Goals, Framework Adoption and Benefit Assessment”

¨  Qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews.

¨  Research Questions 1.  “Which goals do companies aim to achieve over time in

practice..?” 2.  “In which way to companies adopt available EA

frameworks and modeling methods..? 3.  “How do companies measure the achievement of the set of

goals?” ¨  Used Nvivo 9 for qualitative data analysis

Research Findings [2]Lange & Mendling, "An Experts' Perspective on EA Goals, Framework Adoption and Benefit Assessment”

¤  Their Theoretical Foundation

¤  The classes reflect how goals change over time ¤ All companies customized Frameworks and selected

modeling techniques to fit there needs ¤ All companies reported they don’t use structured techniques

to objectively measure benefits n  But all agree it’s important

What Was Not Explained Well [2]Lange & Mendling, "An Experts' Perspective on EA Goals, Framework Adoption and Benefit Assessment”

¨  Demographics of Interviewees, Companies they work for and demographics for the EA organizations.

¨  The questions asked and interview guide

¨  Acknowledged Limitations ¤  Limited number of interviews (16 and half was done by

telephone) ¤ Need to increase geographic spread (theirs was mainly from

Germany) ¤  Subjective interviewee selection process based on personal

contacts ¤  Public Sector Industry not covered

Future Work [2]Lange & Mendling, "An Experts' Perspective on EA Goals, Framework Adoption and Benefit Assessment”

¨  Detailed cases studies to validate findings ¨  Develop a maturity model ¨  Ways to do benefit assessments of EA ¨  How can EA frameworks be more easily adopted
