1. Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. The Godfather definitely started a sympathetic analysis of the mafia family. Not only did it revive the genre, but it a view from the inside. We saw these people almost as everyday human beings going there lives as influential and powerful people. Michael Corleone used that angle when describing to Kay that his father was just like any other powerful man. However, we also saw how a hero, a college boy bound for better horizons becomes as corrupt as the family business. We have sympathy and contempt for the characters as in depending of the scene they are both hero and villain.

2. Find a related article and summarize the content. The article The Godfather, I and II: Patterns of Corruption by Anthony Ambrogio describes and compare the Michaels journey into a life of organized crime in both films. Although, the articles main argument is the comparison of Michaels corruption in films and how they actually parallel, its still a great explanation of the same. Michael begins to address the organization as a business, much like his father. Its contrasted in Sonnys reactions as they are more emotional and get carried away. However, little by little, even though the murders are necessary we a denigration in Michael as he slowly becomes emotional yet calculative. http://library.kean.edu:2048/login?url=http://library.kean.edu:2054/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=cookie,ip,url,cpid&custid=keaninf&db=aph&AN=31286101&site=ehost-live&scope=site

3. Apply the article to the film screened in class.Having seen all three Godfather films the article did point out the similarities in the story between the first two films. However, for the sake of the exercise Ill concentrate only on the first film. The article didnt really change my values, perception, or emotion about the film. Ive always valued how the film describes step by step process Michael Corleone goes through from Ivy League college wanting nothing to do with the family business to the Godfather.

4. Write a critical analysis of the filmThe film is an elegant piece of film history. Michaels corruption is carefully written and played out to the point where one could say, This could happen to me Its clear that the film was product of a formally trained producer-director. The shots are carefully planned and edited together. The story is rich and detailed, yet quick and exciting. Additionally, its still refreshing to see the mafia family from the inside. Although we still have that today, like the Sopranos, this film really set the tone for it.
