    Journey Growing in Faith

Teach me the way I should go, for to you I

lift up my soul.” ~ Psalm 143:8

  • Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Jesus tells us that the greatest commandments are to “love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) And so we believe that it is crucial in our walk with Christ to continue to learn and grow in our faith. The Journey program is Centreville United Methodist Church’s way to offer you opportunities to deepen your spiritual life,

strengthen your understanding of faith, and learn more about the God that we follow.

This fall Centreville’s Journey program is offering more new classes, lectures, and events to help you grow. Between September and December we will offer both long-term, and short-term learning opportunities. Some of the studies will ask you to read a book or watch a lecture in advance of the class meeting. Others will simply invite you to come and learn together. Some of our classes build from week to week and others allow you to come when you are able. The Journey program is designed to meet the needs of everyone on all different walks of life. Whether you are exploring Christianity, new to the faith, or continuing in your walk with Christ, we hope that you will consider taking this

next faithful step on your Journey.

We would also like to express our gratitude to the many hands and hearts whose dedication, hard work, and prayer have guided us to this place. Many people have given their time, talents, gifts, service, and witness to provide these opportunities. We are

grateful for their leadership and willingness to guide us all closer to Christ.

We pray that these classes will be a meaningful experience for you, and in all things

they will draw you close to our great teacher, Jesus Christ.

    Grace and Peace,

  • Broken and Blessed by Jessica LaGrone is a six week study that traces the story of God bringing

blessing from brokenness through generations. Despite both good and

bad traits that were passed down, God worked for good in every generation: determined to transform those in and

outside the family bloodlines. Through this study we are shown how God can use our own broken families

to bring blessings to a hurting and broken world.

    Teacher: Libby Wayne Tuesdays, 12:15pm

  • Yoga is a practice that brings together mind, body, and spirit in prayer. With your intention set on God, yoga becomes a holy practice that can transform your body andspirit. Our classes will be spent connecting our spirit with the wholeness of Christ as we reflect on the fruit of the spirit. These one hour sessions are lead by Brittney who is a certified Yoga instructor. She began with the practice of Bikram in 2010 and obtained her Mastery of Mediation in August 2016. She has also traveled to the Arhanta Yoga Ashram in India for her advanced 500 hour Registered Teacher Training. While this is a free class, we invite you to consider making a $10 donation each week to help sustain this ministry.

    Session 1 Monday 10:00AM, September 11 - October 23 Saturday, 10:30AM September 16 - October 27

    Session 2

    Monday 10:00AM, November 6 - December 18 Saturday 10:30, November 4 - December 16

  • Experience God through community and

liturgy in the woods. Guiding prayer and

scripture will be given as we take in fresh air

and notice the earth. Midway through the

hike, we will have a discussion and share in

communion and prayer before returning to

our starting point for a benediction. Come

experience worship a new way while we

    explore stories from the wilderness.

  • Have you ever considered the role of food in the Bible?

In the book of Ruth, hunger is the character that truly drives the plot

forward. Join us for a five week study on Ruth as we explore this well-known story.

We will gain a new insight into the historic role of women and food in

Ancient Israel, and uncover the truth that this story can speak into our world today.

Teacher: Pastor Ellen Wednesdays, 7:00pm September 27th—October 25th

  • GriefShare support groups are led by

people who understand what you are

going through and want to help. You’ll

    gain access to valuable GriefShare

resources to help you recover from your

loss and look forward to rebuilding your

life. This support group is designed

specifically for those who have lost a

    spouse.

    Facilitated by

    Pastor Michelle Holmes Chaney and

    Roxanne Woodward, MSW, Captial Caring

    Thursdays, September 28th —November 16th

    6:30pm—8:00pm

  • DivorceCare is a friendly, caring group of people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Don’t go through separation or divorce alone. • This one night lecture is an

    introduction and orientation to the

Bible. We will look at the development

of the Bible, the different types of

    biblical literature, and the overarching

scope of the Bible’s stories. If you’re

looking for a place to begin or a

refresher on the basics, this is it!

    Teacher: Pastor Ellen

    Monday, October 9th

    7:00pm—9:00pm

  • Paul tells us in Romans 10:17 that “faith

comes by hearing.” Chances are the only

time we hear the scriptures are on Sunday

morning in worship when the choir sings and

when the lessons are read. In the quiet of our

homes, we will read the scriptures, but do so

    silently. Isn’t reading aloud something

reserved for a parent and a small child?

In this class we will participate in the

practice of hearing the story and not just

reading it. We will bring the stories to life

and let the drama unfold as we hear

these stories that were part of the oral

tradition of the early church long before

they were written down. Hopefully we will

gain new insights and deepen our

appreciation of these life giving words

that were meant to be heard.

    Teacher: Pastor Will

    Thursdays, October 5th— November 9th

    7:00pm—8:15pm

  • Begin the Advent season with this special one day women’s event as we explore scripture and hear Florence Littauer’s

    Silver Boxes:

    The Gift of Encouragement

These humorous anecdotes and touching insights inspire readers to reach out with

encouragement to people who are hurting and need help. Learn how to make others

feel special, mend broken dreams and share the affirming message of the gospel through

    encouragement.

    Saturday, December 2nd 2:00pm

  • How do we make disciples of Jesus Christ outside of the walls of our

church? Join Pastor Don Gibson of Beulah United Methodist Church for this special advent event. Come hear

Pastor Don tell how one church introduced their neighbors to Christ

with Chinese food and radical hospitality.

    Saturday, December 2nd 10:00am

  • Family caregivers provide a wide

range of services and support for

    their loved ones’ well-being and

continued independence. Answering the call to provide

support as a family caregiver is

    challenging, but also rewarding.

    Join this one-night discussion about

    the unique needs, potential

    resources, and helpful strategies for

all caregivers of those we love.

    September 25, October23, November 18

    7:30pm—8:30pm

  • Our church mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ as we worship, grow, and serve together. But how do we actually go about doing the work of making disciples? Join us on October 16

    th for

an evening discussion of visionary discipleship. We will look at how John the Baptist made disciples of Jesus Christ, and what we can take away from that lesson in order to make disciples in our own community. The guest speaker for the evening, Rev. Tim Craig, is the Senior Pastor at Great Bridge United Methodist Church in Chesapeake Virginia. He is also currently serving as the mentor to Centreville UMC in the Next Level Innovations program. Monday, October 16th 7:-00pm—9:00pm

  • So many of us long for a more meaningful, awe-inspiring Christmas. The four weeks of Advent offer us a time to experience the joy,

hope, and peace of this holy season. Pausing for just a few minutes each day readies our hearts to receive the most

wondrous gift of all—the Christ who is alive and present with us today and every day.

This four week study is perfect to do

together as a family. A daily reading will lead you to reflect on one word and passage from the Christmas story, and a doable

practice helps us apply the day’s word to our lives. Each Sunday will also examine one of the characters from the Christmas story—

Mary, Joseph, the magi, and the shepherds. Teachers: Barb Shaiko and Nancy Rowland Sundays, November 26th — December 17th 4:00pm—5:00pm

  • Are you ready for the next step on your faith journey? In September our congregation is going to take a year to read the bible together. You can begin today to pray and discern how God is calling you deeper into the Word. Three different reading tracks offer a place for everyone to begin. If you are looking for a place to begin,

commit to reading the four gospels. If you want to take the next step deeper,

commit to a weekly reading that will introduce you to the 52 stories every Christian should know.

If you are ready to experience the word of

God in its entirety, commit to daily readings that will take you through the whole bible in the year.
