Hello, I’m the new man on the block!

The fact is, now I have three legs,

So it’s one less shoe to lace.

Dr. MacKenzie took good care of me;

I lived in a four-by-four wooden box

With no windows and no doors.

Now, in my wonderful spacious new home

Update on DJ

DJ came to Journey’s End a few years

ago after he was found in an outside

colony with a badly broken leg. After

surgery to stabilize the leg, DJ made a

full recovery and now lives in the Cat

House. He loves attention and has no

trouble jumping on the cat towers to get

some petting.

Florence’s love for animals did not truly begin in the 1970s,

but rather from the day she was born over 89 years ago.

Florence was born in a small village in Chile while her

father was a civil engineer in South America. Her father

encouraged her love of animals and gave her her first pets,

including a monkey in Venezuela, and an injured parrot in

Haiti. When her family returned to the States, she studied in

upstate New York to be a teacher, but became a physical

therapist instead.

Meet our soon to be 90 year old (Dec. 16th) founder ... Florence Thuot!

Florence has enjoyed a remarkable life that also includes a talent for music and theatre. In her youth,

she was a classical pianist and played with well-known collegiate groups. She also played in a local

swing band, performing for audiences throughout Florida. Her love for theatre grew here in DeLand as

well with a long stint with the Shoestring Theatre and the Daytona Playhouse, performing, directing,

and producing for over 25 years. She was also a competitive swimmer, and was 50- and 100-meter

freestyle champion in Venezuela. Now her professional duties are to be 24-hour nanny to the many

residents of Journey’s End.

Hurricane Update

Thanks to everyone who checked in and offered to

help during Hurricane Irma. We were fortunate to

avoid any major damage. Some trees were

knocked down and there were a lot of branches

and leaves in the yard, but no injuries and no

building damage. Our generator kept the power

on…a real necessity since we rely on well water.

Special thanks to everyone who brought food or

supplies, or volunteered with the yard clean-up, or

otherwise helped out, and our best wishes to

everyone affected by the storm.

Memorial Stones

We are continuing to gather names to inscribe on the memorial stones that will be placed in the walkway to

the Memorial Garden. Soon we will be doing the inscriptions and laying the stones in place. Each stone is

approximately 8” x 12” and will have space for a short inscription of one animal’s name, or a person or

persons’ name, and optionally a year. (Examples: “Maggie 2014”, “Bill and Mary 2016”, “The

Donaldsons”) To order, just send a minimum $25 donation via check with a note including your desired

inscription; or use PayPal to pay online and specify the inscription in the “Write a note” field.
