Sermon Outline

It teaches us to recognize and celebrate God for being our God It teaches is how to have a kingdom perspective and how to surrender our lives to the

will of God It helps us to recognize who’s really in control It teaches us how to get our relationships in order; our relationship with God and our

relationship with each other Matthew 6:12, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

♦ “And forgive us our debts…” Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” “When we confess our sin to God, we don’t ask God to agree with our assessment of the sin; we simply agree with His. God does not ask us to confess because He needs to know we have sinned, but because He knows that we need to know we have sinned.” 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

• Our sin is “out of sight” Isaiah 38:17, “Surely it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. In your love you kept me from the pit of destruction; you have put all my sins behind your back.” Romans 4:7 NLT (Paul quotes from Psalm 32:1,2), "Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight?”

Sermon Notes

• Our sin is “out of reach” Psalm 103:12, “… as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgres-sions from us.” Micah 7:19, “Once again You will have compassion on us. You will tread our sins beneath your feet; You will throw them into the depths of the ocean!”

• Our sin is “out of memory” Jeremiah 31:34, “No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Ephesians 1:7 NLT, “He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.” Colossians 2:13-14 NLT, "You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all your sins. He cancelled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ’s cross." 1 John 2:12, "I am writing to you, my dear children, because your sins have been forgiven because of Jesus."

♦ “… as we also have forgiven our debtors.” William Barclay, “Forgive us our sins in proportion as we forgive those who have sinned against us.” Everett Fullam, “Father, forgive my sins only to the extent that I am willing to forgive those who have sinned against me.” “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” (Mark 11:25) Luke 6:37, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Philip Yancey writes, "At last I understood…in the final analysis, forgiveness is an act of faith. By forgiving another, I am trusting that God is a better justice-maker than I am. By

forgiving, I release my own right to get even and leave all issues of fairness for God to work out. I leave in God’s hands the scales that must balance justice and mercy.” 2 Corinthians 2:10-11, “If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” Reflection…

Tim and Tammy Aho--Church Planting Missionaries

to Great Britain

CMF International is people working throughout the world as Christ’s change agents in the transformation of lives and communities. Our missionaries live among the people they serve, learn the language, and work within the culture to communicate the love of God. We place a high value on our missionaries working in teams, which have a shared strength as they determine the best strategies and use of personnel for their field. This proven approach gives us

continuity, accountability, fellowship, and effectiveness.

Tim & Tam Aho have twenty-one years of history with CMF, and almost nine-teen in England. Their church-planting efforts have been focused on the West Midlands, in Shirley and Dickens Heath on the southeastern edge of Birming-ham. With teammates Aaron and Diane, they launched Dickens Heath Village Church in 2002. In 2007 they turned over their leadership roles to local lead-ers, and shifted to planting a simple church network called thethirdplace. Their focus is on discipling people into followers of Jesus to maturity and multiplication. They serve on a national level with the Fellowship of Churches of Christ to help establish a church-planting movement in the UK. For more information on Tim & Tammy Aho, go to http://cmfi.org/wherewework/missionary/ttaho

The Food and Fellowship Ministry consists of the Fellowship Team and the Take Five Team. The Fellowship Team provides food, sets up, and cleans up at Fellowship Events several times a year. They organize large events such as the Thanksgiving Dinner and All-Church Picnics. They also provide food and set up for Christmas Eve, Easter morning and other small ministry events. When the Journey has outdoor events, you often see this team serving hot dogs and chips. There is also a Take Five Team. This group provides snacks for Take Five break during Sunday services. A person (or a team of two) provides the 18 dozen small snacks for Sunday morning services, once every three months. Another person is assigned to provide about 8-10 dozen snacks for the 5pm service each month. The snacks can be either home baked or purchased. There are also people assigned to set up the snacks, make sure the coffee stations are taken care of, and to tidy up afterwards. We want to thank the following people for their faithful help in providing a delicious Take Five experience:

We also want to thank the Fellowship Team for their great help and support in making the Fellowship Events run smoothly and for the many times they have pro-vided delicious food over the years:

If you would like to help with the Food and Fellowship Ministry, sign up on the sheet in the lobby or contact Vicki Becker—[email protected]

JOURNEY OUTDOORS IS COMING BACK! The Journey sponsors a hiking ministry designed to get us out and moving once a month, but has been on hiatus over the summer as we looked for someone who could take over the lead. And God has blessed this ministry with not one, but two people who are excited to head it up! Renee Mowery and Steve McDonald will co-lead this team, with hikes starting back in September. The first planned hike

will be on September 20th. It will be a short, scenic hike (3.7 miles) at Stony Man Mountain. More details to follow! If you are interested in joining this hike, or if you would like to be on an email list to receive news and updates about the Journey Outdoors ministry, please sign up in the lobby. For more information about this month’s hike, contact Renee Mowery - [email protected].

REFUEL WEDNESDAY NIGHTS BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 17TH Attention all Jr/Sr High! Beginning September 17th, Refuel moves to a new night and a new schedule. We’ll kick it off on September 17th here at the church at 6:30, with “Refuel’s Kitchen Challenge,” - but don’t worry, there will be no actual cooking! Instead we’ll have some “minute-to-win-it” type challenges involving food, like maybe… peeling a banana with your feet, or using only your face, moving a

cookie from your forehead to your nose! Stuff like that. Plus we will be starting a new study on basic Biblical doctrines. The following week we go “off site” to JR & Christy Pittman’s. Pick up a postcard in the lobby for details on the new schedule and directions to JR & Christy’s house. There is also a sign up in the lobby if you can provide snacks. If you have questions about the new schedule and the reason for the move, contact: Adam Schuster—[email protected].

GIRLFRIENDS AND GOD SEPTEMBER 21ST We hope that you had a fun & relaxing summer. We have missed you and look forward to catching up at our next Girlfriends & God event on Sunday, September 21 with the back-to-school theme of Teachable Moments. We will meet from 1-3pm (after the second service). A light lunch and childcare will be provided. Please RSVP on the sign up sheet in the lobby or by evite, which will be sent out next week.

HOMESCHOOL PICNIC SEPTEMBER 5TH Jen Skaggs, Kristen Bieszke & Abby Bulliner would like to invite anyone that is homeschooling to come out Friday, September 5th to Chessie’s Big Backyard Playground at Lee Rec Center at noon. Bring your own picnic lunch. This is meant to be an opportunity for fellowship and encouragement.

JOURNEY MEALS TO GO Journey Meals To Go is an area of our church ministry that directly touches those in need. Currently, we provide meals to those that have had a new baby, had surgery or had any other circumstance arise that put them in need of meal support. The meals are coordinated through the Meal Train website, making it simple for the Journey Meals supporters and recipients to get all the important details. If you or someone you know within the church is in need of support, or if you would like to help provide meals, please contact Abby Bulliner at [email protected] or Lisa Steedsman - [email protected] via email.

ARE YOU MISSING SOMETHING? We have a small "lost and found" location behind the guest welcome booth in the front foyer. We'll keep stuff for 30 days and then send it along to our local charity clothing bank or the Salvation Army. Not finding it here? Check down at the infor-mation booth for Journey Kidz - they have a box, too! Contact Jim Pruitt at [email protected] .

Opportunities to Serve

HELP WANTED - CONNEXION MINISTRIES: Summer is a time of transition at the Journey. Lots of visitors. "Zone Greeters" offer a friendly face and a chance to help first time visitors and recent attendees get connected with the Journey family. Remember the chal-lenges of being new to a church? How about volunteering

for this important ministry? If you are interested or just want more details, please contact Jim Pruitt at [email protected].

LEAD USHERS NEEDED - VOLUNTEER TODAY! Are looking for a place to serve, but you’re a behind-the-scenes kind of person? We’re looking for some good men and women to help serve as ushers in one of our three services to ensure that the worship service runs smoothly. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Gabe Stewart [email protected].

ESL TEACHERS NEEDED: Want a rewarding, hands-on volunteer opportunity? Teach English to our immigrant neighbors. Classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 9-Nov. 20, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 5952 Franconia Rd., Alexandria, VA 22310. Teachers must commit to one class per week (mornings or evenings.) Classes are team-taught. No experience necessary -- just a smile and a desire to help people from other countries! Volunteers also are needed to assist with registration Sept. 9. People from several area churches come together to meet this critical need in our community. For more information, visit www.sjlc.com/learn/ESL. Or e-mail Franconia Area Churches ESL Coordinator Diane Brody at [email protected].
