TRANSCRIPT
Journeys with Jean… “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old people will dream dreams, your young people will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit.”
Joel 2:28-29
Vision is an interesting thing. As I’ve struggled through the years to maintain a
good correction to my inherited poor vision, I’ve occasionally been frustrated, but
mostly resigned. I am grateful that poor vision can be medically corrected with
lenses or surgery. But I still miss the days when I could simply get up in the morn-
ing and see clearly without scrambling for glasses or contact lenses.
I believe churches struggle with vision also. At times, with good leadership and enthusiasm
from pastor and people alike, a church can really take off and grow both numerically and spir-
itually. At other times, a congregation may feel lackluster—like it’s a daily struggle just to
survive.
I am SO pleased to say that I believe Christ UMC is moving into the first category. We are
indeed taking off and ready to grow in so many ways. We have a wonderful presence in our
community, and we’re working to make deeper connections with all the groups that use our fa-
cility. We have people visiting us for worship, and record numbers of families with children
involved in our programs. And most important of all, we are deepening our trust in God, know-
ing that God has great things in store for each of us as Christians, and for our church.
I’m so glad you’re part of this amazing, faithful congregation! Let’s start dreaming God’s
dreams for our future together…
Yours in Christ, Pastor Jean

friend from the Millcreek Library. We have had trips to the park and the library.
Fall Session will bring schedule changes beginning September 8, 2015. There will no
longer be a full day option. We will have two half day sessions, 9:00am-12:00pm and

choose mornings or afternoons. The tuition is $20 per half day session. Open enrollment will begin August
1st. More details are on the church website: www.christumcutah.net/preschool-pdo.
Did you know? Friendships in early childhood help us solve problems and let us know through similar experi-

New Adult Study Opportunities this Fall:
Sunday evenings:
Invitation to the New Testament – Beginning September 13th at 5:00 pm in Room 101 (8 sessions) led by Vanitta Conrad. Explore the writings of the New Testament using the story of Jesus as the starting point. This survey of the testament looks at how the early church took ownership of and was shaped by the story of Jesus and how the church learned how to develop as disciples and create communities of faith.
Monday evenings:
Financial Peace – Beginning September 14th at 6:30 pm in the Chapel (Room 100) (9 weeks) led by Dale McCormick & Bruce Meyer. This is a biblically based curriculum that teaches people how to handle money God’s way. We all need a plan for our money. This class will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! Sign up now: www.daveramsey.com/fpu.
Wednesday mornings:
Joseph – The Journey to Forgiveness – Beginning September 9th at 9:30 am in the Parlor, led by Evelyn Kasworm. This six-week study explores what God has to say to us about grace and forgiveness through Joseph's story of trial and triumph found in Genesis 37-50. As we study his dreams, his betrayers, his dys-functional family, his struggle to forgive, and his journey toward reconciliation, we'll find truths that echo into our own personal situations as well as practical help for answering common questions, such as: How do I stop dwelling on the hurt? Is forgiving someone excusing what happened? When will I stop having to re-forgive? Is there a difference between forgiveness and reconciliation? How can I forgive and still set boundaries? Is it ever okay not to forgive?
Whether or not you are working through a hurtful situation right now, you can learn from Joseph how to release your past and present hurts to God and allow Him to do a supernatural work of forgiveness in your life. God wants to use the very things intended to hurt you as a source of blessing in your life and the lives of others.
Our Regular Classes return on August 30th:
Sundays Mornings –
Life & Times Class - Join us as we continue “Beginnings of Judaism”. How did Judaism develop from its biblical roots to the highly developed system we know today? What has changed—and what has re-mained constant? The answers to these questions are relevant to all faiths, as well as to anyone seek-ing to broaden their understanding of ancient history—a past that is inexorably linked to the pre-sent. (Room 101, 9:00am)
Wesleyan Class – Join us for a study/discussion on Dr. Rebecca Parker’s book “Saving Paradise – How Christianity Traded Love of this World for Crucifixion and Empire”. Saving Paradise offers a fascinating new lens on the history of Christianity, from its first centuries to the present day, and asks how its early vision of beauty evolved into one of torture, and what changes in society and theology marked that evolution. It also retrieves, for today, a life-affirming Christianity that the world sorely needs. (Parlor at 9:00 am) Beginning September 13th.
Bible Exploration - Join us as we study Walking with God in the Desert – from the That the World May Know series. In this twelfth volume of the "Faith Lessons" series, taught by historian and teacher Ray Vander Laan, you'll discover that it's only when hard times come and you are totally dependent on God that you will experience God's amazing grace and provision. (Room 207 at 9:00 am)
Weekdays/Evenings –
Bagel Boys – Enjoy great conversation about men’s faith journeys over bagels and coffee. (Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am – Parlor)
Spirits & Spirituality – A monthly gathering for men with varied topics and good fun. Watch for our kick-off information in September. Contact Paul Conrad with questions at [email protected].
Yoga – Refresh your body, mind and spirit. (Thursdays at 4:30 – Room 201)

COFFEE HOUR FELLOWSHIP Somewhere in the history of the United Methodist Church, coffee hour fellowship was created. Maybe it began during the first small meeting between John and Charles and their friends. Have you ever been to a UMC that didn’t offer coffee? It is an important part of ministry at Christ United Methodist Church. Not just a gather-ing of friends catching up and sharing news, it is a place where connections are made It is an opportunity to offer hospitality to visitors. Coffee hour is a time to share the happenings of various groups in the church.
FAMILY PROMISE HOSTS NEEDED for the week of August 23rd-30th. Did you know it takes over 60 volunteers to make this
week a success? Whether you like to cook, play with kids or get a good nights sleep, this is an easy and rewarding way to
help others. Watch for the sign-up board outside of the church office and in the gym during the Sunday coffee hour be-
ginning July 26th. Thank you in advance for considering this wonderful ministry.
August Mission Focus: The Road Home
The Road Home is open every day of the year to provide shelter to anyone in need. We do not turn people away, we make room for everyone who needs a safe, warm place to stay. Most of the families and individuals who come to us in need of shelter leave quickly without additional housing services. A small number of the people we serve need more assistance. The Road Home manages several different types of supportive housing programs with the purpose of helping people
obtain housing and stabilize so they do not fall into homelessness again. The community can join us in our fight to end homelessness by volunteering or providing financial or in-kind donations. We have monthly volunteer orientations and volunteers assist our work on a daily basis. We have a donation warehouse located at the shelter that accepts in-kind items ranging from baby supplies to clothes and shoes to blankets and hygiene items. Information about these opportunities and needed items can be found on our website www.theroadhome.org. Additionally a donation as small as $10, can provide shelter for one person per night and donations can be made online. If you have any questions, please contact Craig Foster [email protected].
Thanks to all of you who help prepare, serve and clean up our coffee fellowship times! Here are the upcoming host groups: AUGUST 02 Worship 09. Joys, Concerns and Thanks, Prayers
Deepest Condolences to Diane Minerich and Mary Lou Aune and their families on the death of their mother, Jean Watson, Monday, July 6th.
Deepest Condolences to the family and friends of Lee Eggleston who passed away Saturday, June 20th.
Deepest Condolences to the family and friends of Bob Rains who passed away July 19th.
Pat Linnebur and Kitty Borrowman were blessed to go on pilgrim-age to sacred spots in England with a group from St Mark's Church in Sacramento. We worshipped on Sunday morning in the historic chapel of John Wesley, built in 1778 as a home base for his preaching ministry in London. It continues as an active church community of Methodism. Here are some of Wesley's words to ponder:
***The best thing of all is God is with us.
***"Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? With-out all doubt, we may. Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding these smaller differences."---from a sermon in the Works of John Wesley
