    This artic le isolates three important trends in Lowland Maya archaeology

    during the last decade: (1) increased use of the conjunctive approach, with

    renewed appreciation o f context an d provenience; (2) waning use o f the label

    unique to describe the Maya; and (3) an e ffort to use the Lo wla nd Ma ya

    as a case study in social evolution.

    Although environmental degradation and p oo r nutrition and he alth, along with

    attendan t political problems, are th e ob viouskeys o the decline of the C opan polity,

    such fundamentally ecological problems cannot explain the ver y low levels of

    population after abou t A.D . 1050. The re was en ough fertile alluvial bottomland to

    feed a stable population of some thousands of people. Population loss probably

    was cau sed not only by high m ortality and low fertility, but by emigration as well,

    as peop le left Copan for mor e attractive regions.
