RISKY BUSINESSWicak Baskoro finds that survival

for these Indonesian farmershas steep consequences.jpgmag.com/people/wicakbaskoro

These local farmers are planting crops onthe side of Mount Slamet, the second highestpeak on the island of Java, Indonesia, andone of the most active volcanos in the region.Volcanic eruptions are not the only threat inthe area: the steep sides of this mountainalso increase the potential for landslides.Planting trees on the sides of this volcano

could prevent future landslides, but mostfarmers are unaware of this and there areno regulations in place to encourage themto do so.

Here, the farmers are cultivating lettucebecause the long harvesting period oftrees would have a significant impact onthem financially. To me, this representsthe courage that Indonesian farmers havewhen dealing with economic and ecologicalproblems. While the types of crops they growmay affect their future, they must also figureout how to survive today.

I didnt know it at the time, but Dikke Dennis is quite a famous guy.

I used to see him almost every day when I would pass his tattooshop located in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam. The nameof the shop was 666, and it said Dikke Dennis on the window. Inally found out that this was his name, which translates to ThickDennis. He would often sit out front with an array of characters, some of whom were quite intimidating. Eventually, I found the cour-age to ask if I could take some pictures inside his tattoo shop.

This is a digitally stitched panorama taken towards the end ofthe shoot when Dennis and Patricia started watching televisionbecause they got bored of me. I found out during the shoot that notonly is a he a well-known tattoo artist, but he is also famous forbeing in the band Peter Pan Speedrock, appearing on TV and in amovie, and even having a book written about him.

FEEDING TIMEIguanas are both hunted and protected inHonduras. Allison Inloes explores the refugewhere thousands of iguanas feel at home.jpgmag.com/people/allison1524

This photo was taken at an iguana farm in Roatn, asmall island off the coast of Honduras. For the past 30years, the farm has served as a refuge for iguanas, andprotected them from local hunters. Currently, about 2,700iguanas consider this 15-acre property their home.

My younger cousin Julie was looking around thefarm and petting the iguanas when I took this picture. They had just been fed, which is why there are so manycongregated in one area. It might seem a little scary thatshe had so many iguanas around her, but they are verymellow, so I think Julie found the situation humorous.

The rst thing that I saw at the Museum of Modern Art New Yorkretrospective of Henri Cartier-Bressons photography, was aseries of wall-sized maps with crisscrossing arched lines thatrepresent his near-constant travels during his career. He begantraveling at age 22, and didnt stop for over 40 years, so thelist of countries that he explored extensively is quite impres-

sive. Through the pages of Life and similar magazines, Bressonbrought Americans their rst intimate glimpses of distant coun-tries. With this in mind, I decided to focus on what Bresson didfor much of his career during my visit to New York: street life.

In modern New York, one can emulate Bressons globe-trotting agenda without leaving the ve boroughs. Inspired bythis idea, I visited Puerto Rican East Harlem, Wall Street, IndianJackson Heights in Queens, Chinatown in Manhattan, the trendyWilliamsburg in Brooklyn, and the wild Jamaica Bay. My goalwas to document the culture of New York by capturing momentsthat constitute daily life throughout these neighborhoods as anhomage to Henri Cartier-Bressons life work.

The exhibition, Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century, isa reminder of how much the world has changed, and simultane-

ously how nothing has truly changed at all. Today, people arebombarded by images from around the world, so I pondered howBressons work continues to endure. The answer is found in thepictures themselves, which largely depict relationships, daily life, and signicant social events. As the curator of the exhibition,Peter Galassi, notes: Bressons true subjects were society andculturecornerstones of our civilization. By focusing on thesesame subjects, I hoped to capture moments in New York societythat reect our culture today, and have the same timeless qual-ity found in Bressons photographs.

JPG partnered with the Museum of Modern

Art New York to celebrate the exhibition, Henri

Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century, the rst

major US retrospective of the photographers

work in three decades. The winner of our PhotoChallenge: Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson,

Nathan Weyland, traveled to New York to see the

exhibit and document the citys culture. Find out

about his adventure on the following pages, and
