    Thefollowingnotesdescribeinbriefaretheprincipalactivity,andresponsibilitiesofJSAwithintheabovenamedstageswitheachfullscalebuildingproject

    A:FEASIBILITY

    TheArchitectwillmeetwiththeclienttothoroughlyunderstandboththeoverallvisionthattheclient holdswith regard to the project and the specific character and scope of the activitieslistedintheclientsbrief.JSAreviewsthefunctionalactivitieselaboratedinthebriefastotheirrequiredspacesandconditions.Withan initialsitevisitandstudytheArchitectwillreviewthegeneral feasibility of the site of the approximate required building area and its functionalrequirements.Withapositiveassessmentoftheproject feasibilityanddiscussionofsuchwiththeclienttheArchitectwill convince its full Design Team to determine project targets and too refine theschedule of design. Thereafter the team will assess the site in detail. Each site offersopportunitiesandconstraintswhichmustbewellunderstoodfromthebeginning.Theyfollowtheabovelistandincludeaswellthesurroundingneighborscharacteroftheneighborhoodanddesired imageandaccessibilityoftheproject.Theprojectsometimes includesthepreparationofatopographicalsurvey,obtaininggeotechnicalinformationcheckingmainutilityconnectionfeasibilityandzoningorotherregulationswhichcontrolthesite.Fromtheroomarearequirements,augmentedtoaccountforassumedwallandcirculationarearequirements, plus determination of the approximate level of finish quality required by theclientandbuildingtypeJSApreparesapreliminarybudget.

    B:SKETCHSCHEME

    BasedontheinceptionstudiesJSAandclienttogetheradapttheProgramBrief.InconsultationwiththeclientJSAwillprepareaseriesofsketchschemesfollowingtheclientsbriefexploringaseriesofdifferentpossibilitiesappropriate to theclients requirementsand the site. JSAendeavors tomakethedesignoptionsasbroadaspossibleat this stage toelicit ideas thatmightnotyethavearisenwithin the clients project vision. Each will be laid out on the site with building shape characterstructuraltypeandservicesindicated.Eachsiteoffersopportunitiesandconstraints.Thefitwiththesitewillbeclearly indicated ineachoption.Eachprojectcanbeapproached fromdifferentstartingpoints and designed with different client priorities in mind. With the clients reactions andPreferencesthusclarifiedtheconclusionofthesketchschemestageshoulddefinitivelydeterminethedesiredbuildingcharactershapelocationonsitestructure.

    C:FINALPROJECTSCHEME

    FollowingtheinstructionsfromtheclientJSAwilldrawupamoredetailedschemebasedontheabovediscussionsandpreparebudgetestimatesforfinalapprovalJSAwillrefinethesketchscheme intothefinalprojectdesign.Theplanswill finalizedbuilding sectionspreparedand structural systemsdeterminedSeismic factorswillbe identifiedandusedtoguidethestructuralandbuildingfootprintdesignasappropriatetothebuilding type theKathmanduValley seismicvulnerabilityand theparticular seismicpropertiesof theselectedsite.Theenvironmental itwillbeelaboratedastositeaccessforpublicandserviceneedsoutdooractivityspacesviewingopportunitieselectrical,sanitaryandmechanicalsystemsshelterfromundesirablelocalelementsandpassivetechnologyopportunitiesbasedonsolarwindwaterorothernaturalelements.Thebuildingexteriorelevationswill finalize inbasic form roof,windowanddoor types.Theelectedcharacterormetaphorbehindtheappearancewillberefined.

    D:PREPARATIONOFWORKINGDRAWINGSANDCONTRACTDOCUMENTS

    AfterreceivingtheclientsformalandfinalapprovaloftheprojectdesignJSAwillpreparedetailedworking drawings using AutoCAD and hand drawn design techniques as appropriate to thesituationortheaspectoftheprojectconsultingwithengineersandotherspecialistconsultantsasrequired.Preparedetailed specificationsdrawup abillofquantities andprepare thenecessarycontractdocumentsforfulltenderingprocedures.DuringthisperiodJSAwillkeeptheclientfullyinformedontheworkplanandthelikelybuildingcosts.

    E:TENDERINGPROCEDURES

    FollowingtheclientsinstructionsJSAwilladviseasnecessaryontheselectionofprospectivebuildingcontractorsandspecialistsubcontractors;supervisethedistributionoftenderdocuments;assessthebidsandmake recommendation to theclient for theselectionof themaincontractor. JSAwilloffersupporttotheclient ifrequested intheirnegotiationwiththenominatedcontractoronthetermsofthecontract.JSAwilldrawupanyrequestedandrequiredchangestothecontractdocumentbetweentheclientand thecontractor forsignature. JSAwillestablish the termsof reference for thework tocommenceonsite.

    F:SITESUPERVISION

    Under the termsof the contract JSAwill arrange a full time representativeon the site andensure regular site visits aremade by senior representatives of the team to check on thequalityoftheworkandtheadherencetotheagreedworkschedule.

    JSAwillcertifythepaymentstothecontractorandreviewwiththeclientallpotentialvariationstothecontractintermsofdesignconditionsofconstructionbudgetandscheduleofcompletion.

    G:PROJECTCOMPLETION

    JSAwillonbehalfof the clientensure that theworkhasbeen carriedout according to thetermsofthecontractandcertifythepracticalcompletiondataandarrangefortheprojecttobehandedovertotheclient.DuringthemaintenanceperiodJSAwillcheckoutalldefectsforwhichthecontractor is liableandmakesurethattheyaremadegood.Oncompletionofthemaintenanceperiod JSAwillsupervisethecheckingofthe finalprojectaccountandcertify itforpayment.

    JSAbrings theirdesignandsupervisionskills,honedoverseventeenyearofworkingasoneof theleadingarchitecturalfirmsinNepaltothejointventure.(SeeJSACompanyStatement)JSAhasgoodtrackrecordsonqualitycostcontrolandtimelines.Ourapproachincludesthefollowing:DesignandMaterialsQualityisreviewedandenlistedfromthestartbythepracticeofreviewingthelowandofferingthemediumand topqualitymaterialoptions.     ClientDFID,BritishEmbassy,NepalJSAroleArchitectural/EngineeringDesignwithfullsitesupervisionandMaintenanceServicesJSAwasinvolvedinseveralrenovationandrefurbishmentprojectsforDFID.Theofficebuildingwasconvertedfromanexistingcommercialbuilding.This involvedtheentirerenovationofthe interiorofthemainbuilding.The exteriorwork involved landscaping, constructing boundarywalls, entry gates and support inbuildingssuchasacafeteria,astore,conferencehallandmaintenanceareas.Besidesthe interior,electrification,theHVACfacilityandtheentiresanitationworkwerechangedinsidethebuilding.Panicdoorswereaddedtotheevacuationstairsintheexistingbuilding.Theofficerooms (open/enclosed)andmeetingroomswerecreatedasper theneedof theclient.The false ceiling and floor finish were done differently in different rooms according to theirdemands.Theentryporch isdecorated in localstyle traditionalbrick facadeswithwoodcarvingelementsasstairrailing,planteretc.Sinceyear2007JSAhasbeenservingalltheMaintenanceProjectsforDFIDNepalofficeandall itsUKbasedstaffsresidences.

Exterior facade renovation consistedof thedesignof thedoors andwindows,renovationoftheroofareaandfloor.Interior renovation involved the creation of a modern interior with local Nepali interiorornaments/details. Triangular shaped ceiling with window niches were used to reduce the highceilingofthehallandachieveaplayfulinterior.Acopperhorizontalbanddecoratesthehallandalsoreflects light.Thewallsaredecoratedwith localhandwovenDhakapanels indifferentshapesandcolors.Thepanelspartitionacousticallyandprovideasforheat/cold insulation.Thefloor isofsoftrubberwood.Theservices(HVAC,electricityetc.)areinsidethefalseceiling.Atthemainentrancetothehall,anentryporchleadstothemultipurposehallandrestrooms.Thisspacewas reinvaded as a landing space,where people can hang their coats and umbrellas andaccessthebignoticeboardsdecoratedwithlocalhandweavedDhaka.Lightsareplayfullyreflectedwithcopperbands.

All the openings and the corners of the building were retrofitted andstrengthenedagainstseismicresistanceduringtherenovation.Thecolumnsarejacketedandallthedoorsandwindowsareenclosedinsideareinforcedconcreteboxmonolithicallyinterconnectedwiththefloorbeamsandslab.The support facilities inside thecomplex includegenerator room,enclosedparking for5vehicles,guardhouse,driversroom,etc.Thearchitectureadoptsamodernstylewithaluminumdoorsandwindows; bamboo flooring integrated into an original Rana period structure that result in a building

Thearchitecture of the hospital adopts a local style. The concept was derived from ancient Newaripalaces of the Kathmandu Valley; buildings arranged around several courtyards. The hospital issituatedonahillover lookingBanepaCitywiththeHimalayas inthebackground.AllthebuildingswereconstructedasRCCframestructuresandwithabrickcavityinfillwallsystemforgoodthermalperformanceagainstdampnessandheat.Theroofusessteeltrusssystem.

In addition to maternity and pediatric medical services, the project constitutesspacesallocatedforotherhospitalutilitieslikemaintenance,laundry,diningandsoon.Thisbuildingoccupyingclose to100,000square feetofbuiltupspacehasahydroid radiant floorheatingsysteminthemedicalareastoprovidethermalcomforttothepatients.Aframedstructurewith infill cavity wall constitutes doors and windows of UPVC sections. The building has anauditorium,seminarroomsandeducationalfacilitiesonthetopfloor.Thebasementofthebuildingaccommodatesapproximately45carsandalmostanequalnumberoftwowheelerparkingspaces.The building plans are developed through thorough consultations with Patan Hospital team,analyzing the clients need and fulfilling their requirement. The facade of the building has twodistinctcharacteristics.Thesectionnexttotheexistinghospitalisdesignedinfairfacedbrickfacadetomatchtheexistingelevationwhilethefacadealongeastface(nexttomainroad)isinspiredfromShantaBhawanbuildingwherethemissionstarted.

    ClientSonjaKillMemorialHospitalCostUS$2.5MillionJSAroleArchitecturalDesignCompletion2009TheprojectisachildrenhospitalatKampotinCambodia.Designedinalandareaofapproximately70,000squaremeters, theprojectconsists12differentblocksdedicated toOPD,MaternityWard,OT block, SurgeryWard, Intensive CareWard, LongtermWard, InfectiousWard, StaffQuarters,GuestHouse,WorkshopandGuardHouse.Thedesign incorporates features to compliment the rural settingsofCambodia.Thedesignplansincorporate spaces toaccommodatebehaviorpatternsof theactualusersof thesebuildings. JSAdesign team took references from several doctors practicing in Cambodia for the designdevelopmenttooptimizetheutilizationofspaces.Environmentalfactorswerealsogivendueconsiderationduringdesigndevelopmentphase.Louvershave been extensively used in doors andwindows for ample natural ventilation. Likewise, sloperoofs have been designed to withstand the heavy rainfall. Each building has been designedindependentlytofulfilltheirrequirementwhilekeepingacommonoverallappearance.
