brain. As a result of the increased blood flow, intelligence in-creasing hormones are released in the brain allowing us to maxi-mize our cognitive abil-ity.
In the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Sci-ence of Exercise and the Brain authored by John J. Ratey, M.D., Ratey discusses how physical exercise strengthens brain tis-sue by increasing the production of new brain cells.
All forms of exercise have shown to improve
It has long been ac-cepted that individuals who exercise on a regular basis are healthier and less sus-ceptible to illness and disease. A lesser known fact now sup-ported by science, however, is that exer-cise also improves brain functioning and may help increase in-telligence. But how?
Dr. Fred Gage, with colleagues at the Lab of Genetics at Salk In-stitute in San Diego, proved in the late 1990s that the human brain produces new brain
cells. In addition, Dr. Gage concluded that exercise increased the process of new brain cell production that in-creased a human’s cog-nitive ability.
In addition to Dr. Gage, other studies conducted by various institutes, such as the University of Muenster in Germany, have come to the con-clusion that physical ac-tivity improves an indi-vidual’s ability to learn. Exercise has a positive effect on the vascular and endocrine system which in turn increases the blood flow to the

cognitive functioning, however, Ratey has found that complex aerobic exercises, such as martial arts, dancing and tennis provide the most impact because the individual is using more parts of the brain than a simple aerobic exercise.
So, how is this information important to how we view our training and exercise regiment. For years we have viewed exercise as some-thing that strengthened our body and helped to combat depression. Now as a result of these findings which continue to gather support from the scientific world, exercise is equally impor-tant for healthy brain functioning. Gone are

the days when we simply thought that exercise was only for weight loss. Science has proven that exercise not only provides physical strengthening and emotional well being. Complex exercise in-creases an individual’s focus, attention, memory and overall cognitive functioning compared to those of us who choose to live sedentary lives.
If you are looking for another great reason to get on the mat, look no further. The martial art of Ai-kido incorporates every aspect needed to improve brain cell stimulation through both cardiovascular exercise and complex mental stimulation. And you thought you trained simply because Aikido is fun!
