Critical reception;

The film received positive reviews from critics. It garnered a 78% approval rating from 146

critics, with an average rating of 6.5 out of 10, on the review aggregation website RottenTomatoes.

-  Metacritic   provides a score of 59 out of 100 which indicates "mixed or average" reviews—

18 of the sampled critics gave the film a positive review, 7 mixed, and the remaining 4

negative.

-  CinemaScore  polls reported that the average grade moviegoers gave the film was a "B" on

a scale of A+ to F.

Reasons for lack of success;

1)

“ Irksome Concepts and the Shadow of Sly ”  - made changes in other areas – specificallywith the design of Mega-City One, Dredd’s stomping ground and very much a character in its

own right.

 2) “ It’s Another Comic -Book Movie/It’s An Obscure Hero”  - Unfamiliarity with the character

would invariably draw unfavourable comparisons – some people dismissed the movie as a

cheap Batman knockoff thanks to misreading the apparent the dark vigilante feel of the

trailers. US audiences didn’t like that they never got to see the main guy’s face – some were

disappointed at the lack of reveal – which of course misses the fact that we’re not supposed  to

see his face

3) “ Difficult Demographics”  - Dredd dared to stick to its R-rated guns, making it clear from

the outset that punches were not being pulled. This one was going to be bloody. Aiming for a

distinctly adult audience, this annoyed adults turning their backs on cinema attendance –

mostly because they don’t want to sit in a dark room full of chattering kids. Combine that with

the perceived cost element, made worse by the extra sting of 3D hiking the ticket price (more on

that later), the reluctance to hand over hard-earned cash for a movie that doesn’t quite say

what it is.

4) “ Not 2D”  - There was a paltry number of 2D screenings available in both the UK and the US –

which may have had a significant effect on audience numbers.

5) “ Poor marketing”  – Too much money was spent on the use of 3D cameras for the filming of

Dredd. As this film was fairly low budget this means that in theory, they would have wasted a

lot of money on filming with 3D cameras and not putting enough money into the marketing of

the end product, people were not as aware as they would be with a better marketed film.

Personal Opinion;

Personally, I am not into scientific action films, however, although this proved that it wasn’t  a

success with critics, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Though the film was low budget and the quality

of it showed, I enjoyed the film even with its lack of originality and changes in scenery. Though

many people would disagree with the lack of change in scenery, I enjoyed this part of this film as we

were able to go along with the characters and witness the deterioration of the building due to all of

the chaos, which built up through out, this brought action and tension to the film. I would certainly

recommend this to other people to watch.
