the PoSitionJudge Memorial Catholic High School was founded in 1921 and, in the near-century since, has provided an outstanding educational experience, firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition, to students and their families. Together, the various constituencies of the school—faculty and staff, students and parents, families and alumni—have fostered and sustained a school of excellence.

The school remains a special community, where all members are welcome into the family from day one. Established as a high school in 1929, as the oldest Catholic school in Utah, Judge Memorial enjoys a longstanding tradition and solid reputation. Rooted in Catholic values, the school is closely affiliated with the Diocese. In addition to academic excellence, Judge proudly fosters a commitment to social justice and access for diverse students. The school values excellence in all things: academic, athletic, artistic, service, and faith.

Judge is now at a crossroads and seeks a talented and capable leader to serve as Head of School effective July 2015. The successful candidate will embrace the school’s traditions while encouraging innovation, will make it a priority to grow school enrollment, will unite the faculty and administration, and will implement a strategic plan that ensures the longevity of this special, excellent school.

SChool hiStoryJudge Memorial was originally founded as Judge Mercy Home, a hospital established for the population of Catholic coal miners working in Park City, Utah, who suffered from the black lung. As the need for a dedicated hospital declined, Mary Judge worked with the bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake to reopen the medical facility as a school. She passed away before the diocese could open the new school’s doors.

Until 1929, the school was known as Cathedral High School and Catholic Grammar School. The Daughters of Charity originally staffed the school, but in 1927 the Sisters of the Holy Cross replaced them. The Sisters of the Holy Cross continued until 1992 as administrators

and teachers. In 1929, the school’s name changed to Judge Memorial School. It was co-educational until 1961, at which point Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal brought in the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales to run Judge as an all-boys institution.

In 1970, the school again became co-educational. That same year, the school added the word “Catholic” to its name.

Over the course of nearly a century, Judge has remained true to the visions of its founder. Gritty and resilient, students pay homage to the working-class people who

inspired the school’s founding, making sure to stay true to themselves and never give up, even in the face of adversity.

the SChool No matter the circumstances, students and faculty at Judge get things done. The school’s college preparatory program helps students prepare for life after Judge and exposes them to subjects and activities of interest. Teachers are committed to providing academic opportunities that are both rigorous and relevant, which will help students achieve their dreams.

Judge’s curriculum blends traditional Catholic teachings and liberal arts learning. Instruction is rigorous, demanding, and student-outcome based. Students receive support from faculty, staff, and counselors throughout their time at Judge.

To prepare for college, teachers help students gain skill and confidence in effective communication, logic, critical and creative thinking, and the responsible and proficient use of technology for learning. Students follow coursework in theology, English, fine arts, math, science, social studies, and world language, including honors and Advanced Placement courses. Courses and practices are regularly reviewed to ensure that what teachers provide to their students is the best in the region, in the country,

and in the world. Teachers believe that learning requires a disciplined atmosphere that fosters both personal freedom and responsibility for one’s decisions. The school’s faculty appreciates and takes seriously the commitment and sacrifice parents make to give their children the gift of a Catholic education, and Catholic values are rooted in the school’s mission and vision. Judge’s philosophy embraces every individual as a child of God, endowed with many unique gifts, and teachers strive to elicit the best from each and every student.

Judge’s program blends modernity and tradition and uses technology to enhance the learning process for its students. This past August, a BYOD initiative began, which encourages students to use various personal tablet and laptop devices to aid their learning. The school collectively believes that students must be able to utilize technology effectively and respectfully in order to live, learn, and work in today’s information-rich society.

The school enjoys a proud and accomplished athletic tradition that dates back to the 1920s. Judge offers a full slate of athletic opportunities and competes successfully as a member of the Utah High School Activities Association. Student-athletes are afforded the opportunity to participate in the club sports of hockey and lacrosse with Utah High School Hockey and Lacrosse. Athletes may select from a wide variety of teams on which to participate, including cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, hockey, swimming, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, and track and field.

Clubs and after-school activities that meet every interest are available to join at Judge. Students eagerly pursue their passions, whether by joining the Anime Club, performing in Drum Line, giving back through

which are plentiful here. The city rests atop the Salt Lake Valley and is surrounded by the Great Salt Lake to the northwest and mountain ranges to the east and the southwest. Canyons line the city with dozens of world-class ski resorts minutes from downtown. For serious and recreational skiers, Utah’s ski resorts consistently offer superior snow, “the greatest snow on earth!” Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics, and the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Olympic Village still attract visitors each year. Outdoor sports—skiing and snowboarding, boating, fly fishing, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking—are popular year-round. The annual groundbreaking Sundance Film Festival, held each winter, presents documentaries and films in a number of nearby locations surrounding Salt Lake City, including the festival’s traditional home, Park City. living led CNN to cite Salt Lake City as the “least stressed-out” U.S. city in 2014. Housing prices remain affordable with many options in neighborhoods, single-family homes, townhouse communities, and downtown condos. Salt Lake City is easy to traverse, as it is built around a grid system, with lines going north-south and east-west. Relatively uncrowded roads and plenty of public transportation make it an easy city to navigate. The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) provides a robust transit system for the metropolitan area stretching from Provo, 45 minutes south of Salt Lake City, north to Ogden, 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. UTA also provides an extensive light rail system, which includes local TRAX and the FrontRunner, a commuter train that serves the area from Provo to Ogden. The Salt Lake City International Airport is located just ten minutes from downtown. Home to five national parks, 43 state parks, seven national monuments, two national recreation areas and “The Greatest Snow on Earth,” Utah represents the best of the Rocky Mountains and the Desert Southwest. Visitors enjoy easy access to Utah and enjoy scenic vistas, outdoor recreation, shopping, dining, and Western culture. Filled with natural beauty, cultural attractions, fine dining, arts and sports, Salt Lake City is a wonderful place to call home.

oPPortunitieS and ChallengeSThe next Head of School will face the following opportunities and challenges:

• There is widespread acknowledgement that Judge is a very special “community,” a close family of diverse members committed to the same mission and high expectations. After nearly 100 years of distinguished service to the Salt Lake community, Judge’s next Head of School will have an opportunity to build on this solid platform in taking the school to the next level. The school is poised for significant enhancement, and the community is excited about the prospects of bold new leadership.

• Judge’s Catholic identity has always been welcoming of all faith traditions. The next Head of School will be expected to maintain fidelity to Catholic values and the Diocese of Salt Lake City while respecting its core principles of openness and respect for all families and students.

• Growing enrollments will also be a top priority for the next Head of School. The school is currently strong and well capitalized at 750 students but would like to achieve a “right sizing” enrollment plan of roughly 800 students. Capacity and demand are appropriately aligned and await the execution of an effective enrollment management plan.

“Judge Memorial Catholic High School plays a vital role for our community and for the Diocese of Salt Lake City. The Head of School at Judge assumes an unusually prominent position in the community, bringing our message of Christ to families of all faith traditions and affecting children, families and local institutions in extraordinary ways. This is an exciting and important leadership opportunity, and I look forward with great enthusiasm to welcoming the next Head of School for Judge and partnering with him or her in pursuit of our important goals.”

The Most Reverend John C. WesterBishop of Salt Lake City

• There is currently no strategic plan in place. The board is intentionally delaying development of a plan until the next Head of School arrives to lead this important effort.

• The physical plant is a major concern of all constituents. Like many schools, infrastructure is old and at risk, and technology will need substantial upgrades and a strategy for integrating advanced practices more effectively into the classroom. This will be costly and will likely require a capital campaign and strategic alignment of resources and priorities.

QualifiCationS and QualitieS of the next head of SChoolThe next Head of School will possess the following skills and characteristics:

• A faith-filled, practicing Catholic who can function as the spiritual leader of the community and maintain strong relations with the Diocese and the Catholic community at large.

• The board and Diocese are also aware that this is a big leadership challenge for any one person. The school has strong academic leadership in place, at all levels. As such, they seek an entrepreneurial leader with passion for mission who can provide vision, energy, and a desire to assist in evolving into a President/Principal structure over time.

• A proven institution-builder who can raise funds, leverage family engagement and goodwill, and enhance the already strong financial position of the school.

• In addition, the faculty especially seek an upbeat, academic champion who can inspire the school community, affirm the good work they are doing in the classroom, and promote an aggressive commitment to best practices in all areas of teaching and learning.

• An energetic relationship builder and good listener -- a unifier with a collaborative and respectful “servant leadership” style.

• And finally, the school seeks a high-profile, visible leader who will walk the corridors and know each student by name, while also representing the school to all external constituencies and telling the powerful Judge story.
