ROTARY: MAKINGA DIFFERENCE

Rotary District 7280 District Governor 2017-2018

As we experience one of the worst weather disasters in our country, let's concentrate on the compassionate help that many service organizations, volunteers, and Rotary with its partners, are bringing to the aid of victims. I know that we want to send money to these people and many of us already have donated. Months and years from now, victims of this disaster will continue to need aid. Please be aware that Rotary International will communicate where and how our donations can do the most good. I will continue to update you. Most importantly: Be

careful to whom you send donations.

Supporting education

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are ilIiterate. That's 17 percent ofthe world' s adult population.

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for alI children and literacy for children and adults.

HOW ROT ARY MAKES HELP HAPPEN

We take action to empower educators to inspire learning at ali ages.

OUR IMPACT ON EDUCA TION

The Rotary Foundation supports education through scholarships, donations and service projects around the world.

• 500 aduJts raised their reading leveJs by three grades in Detroit • $100 Mil in grants to get clean water in Lebanese schools

Rotary members make amazing things happen:

Opening schools: In Afghanistan, Rotary members opened a girls' school to break the cycle ofpoverty and social imbalance.

Teacbing adults to read: Rotary members in the United States partnered with ProLiteracy Detroit to recruit and train tutors after a study showed that more than half of the local adult population was functionally illiterate.

New teacbing metbods: The SOUNS program in South Africa, Puerto Rico and the United States teaches educators how to improve literacy by teaching children to recognize letters by sounds instead of names.

Making schools healthy: Rotarians are providing clean, fresh water to every public school in Lebanon so students can be healthier and get a better education.

When you teach somebody how to read, they have that for a lifetime. It ripples through the community, one by one.

The Rota,oy Foundation and clubs invest in our future leaders and philanthropists by funding scholarships for undergraduate and graduate study.

l . Rotary clubs offer scholarships for secondary, undergraduate, or graduate study.

Rotary club scholarships are given by individuaI clubs and are open to anyone except Rotary members and their families. Contact your local club for application information and eligibility requirements.

Tbe Rotary Foundation offers scholarships for college graduates and professionals to study peace and conflict resolution or water and sanitation.

Rotary peace fellowships are available to candidates who want to participate in a master's degree or certificate program at one of our six partner universities. Learn about Rotary peace fellowship eligibility reguirements and restrictions.

Foundation water scholarships are available to candidates who have aIready been adrnitted to one ofIHE Delft Institute for Water Education eligible 18-month Master of science degree programs. Learn about the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education scholarship application processo

Page 3: Judy Hughes Rotary District 7280 District Governor 2017-2018...residents were forced to flee their homes. About 6.8 million people have been affected by the hurricane, which made landfall

• 350,000 scholarships have been awarded by Rotary

Rotary clubs can apply to The Rotary Foundation for district and global grants to support scholarshipso

Global grants are for graduate students studying abroad in one of Rotary' s six causes:

1. Promoting peace 20 Fighting disease 3 o Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene 40 Saving mothers and children 50 Supporting education 60 Growing local economies

District grants can be used to sponsor secondary school, undergraduate, or graduate students studying any subject, either locally or abroado The scholarship may cover any length oftime, from a six-week language training program to a year or more ofuniversity studyo

Rotary members are essential to recruiting qualified candidates for Rotary Peace Fellowshipso You can advance peace in troubled areas around the world by promoting peace fellowships and supporting peace fellow candidates through the application processo

FOUNOATION ANO GRANT EOUCATION

5eptember is Education focus month in Rotary. Education has many faces including the importance of Rotary education. Did you know the End Polio funding is separate from the Annual Fund? So, when you contribute to the annual fund, many good things are funded in Rotary but not necessary End Polio.

And did you know that each club needs to attend Grant management training and sign the Memorandum of Understanding EVERY YEAR? Presidents of clubs are required to attend and be signers of the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) since as the leader of the club, they should be aware of projects and funding.

Did you know that District Grants are matching grants? Therefore, you must have equal funding on hand at club to match the request. New versions of the grant applications were emailed to ali club presidents. Did you use the correct version?

Consider asking your Foundation team: PDG Patty Meehan, Chair; Christa 5chott, Annual Foundation subcommittee chair; and/or Dr. Marie Grant and Tom Grant, End Polio Now Chairs to speak to your club. It is our Rotary Foundation so let us give you more facts to support and promote the Foundation.

COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS

The Pennsylvania Volunteers, a Pennsylvania Citizens Corps Council, was established because of the need for a well-trained civilian emergency work force. The Pennsylvania Volunteers teams will assist government agencies by responding during disaster situations where the number and scope of incidents may have overwhelmed conventional emergency services.

ShelterBox Aid

John Marshall and I have been notified by ShelterBoxUSA that it is arranging for the shipment of small tents from our international headquarters in Cornwalt England to Houston. These tents will be used in centers to provide evacuees (primarily families) with some sense of privacy and to contribute to the humanizing of the stressful conditions people are experiencing. Anyone interested in supporting the efforts of ShelterBox should go to ShelterBoxUSA.org and use the "donate" button to make a contribution. Checks should be made out to "ShelterBox USA" and mailed to 7359 Merchant (ourt, Saratoga, Fla. We appreciate any donation made to this humanitarian partner project of Rotary International.
