On Monday the 27th of January Class 4 and Class 3 allwent to the Judges’ Lodgings, Lancaster. We had todress up as Victorian children from the 19th century. Wetravelled there in a VIP coach and we watched Night atMuseum 2 on the way; it was amazing!
During our visit to the Judges’ Lodgings we split up into groups. I liked the school most because the teacherwas strict but it was funny as well. We also learnt abouthomophones and we had to write on a chalk board. The desks were different because they were wooden
and they were like American high schools.Homophones are when a word sounds the same but isspelt differently. Some people had to write with theirright hand, even if they were left handed, which washard.
After we visited the school classroom we went to theplay room, and we played knock down the pins. Thetraditional Victorian games were a lot of fun and it wasa chance for everyone to play with a different toy. Nextwe all went back to another room and ate lunch.

In science Class 4 undertook an experiment to grow theirown bean. It was a very simple project and all they neededfor each plant was a bean seed, a container, compost, apaper towel and some water.
The cup was transparent plastic so you could see theplant grow in more interesting detail. The plant, which iscalled a runner bean, took a few weeks to grow. The plantswere taken home by each pupil with simple instructions tofollow.
A diary was kept each day for two weeks to record thebean’s growth. Although the class watched a video of theplant growth speeded up, it was really exciting to see howquickly the seed grew into a plant at home.
The experiment allowed Year 5 and 6 pupils to examinethe stages of the growth of a plant and see the impact ofwater and sunlight on its growth.
Lifecycles has proved an interesting topic with the classalso looking at the life cycles of a butterfly and a hen.
A team of seven pupilsfrom Bickerstaffe Primary Schoolswam their way to success atthe Ormskirk and District PE andSchools Association (ODPSSA)swimming gala, at Park Pool,Ormskirk on Thursday 27 March.

Do you remember last year inOctober when Juicy Wordlaunched a writing competition?
Well our fabulous editorialteam have decided on twowinners and two runners up.Many different types and stylesof stories were submitted andthe standard of entries wasextremely high. It was not aneasy task to judge!
The winning story from theinfants was by Isabel Sandscalled The Magic Key. FaithCurrie, one of the judges, said,“It was a mesmerizing story andreally stood out”. ThomasRalphs’s story ‘The EarthWomen’ won first place fromthe juniors. Camron Ventryfrom Juicy Word said, “Thomas’sstory was action packed with a
great use of connectives”.Judging the runners- up
proved more difficult becausethere were two people from thejuniors who really deserved theprize! In the end it was decidedthat Kieran Sands and BethanAshburner should be jointrunners up. Congratulations toall four pupils and prizes will bepresented in school shortly.

A surreal moment
On a cold January day, Peter Owens, a local artist came intoschool and brightened the day. He taught us how to createsurreal art. Surreal art is where you start not knowing whatyou are painting, and you usually don’t know when you arefinished. If you look closely you can sometimes see thingsfrom animals to people to mountains.
Rene, Magritte, Salvador Dali and Miro were all surrealistartists. Many surrealists were inspired by Pablo Picasso, a
painter who lived many years before them.Peter told us to start painting; I started with bright colours
and then gradually darkened it. In the end I had afrightened man with lots of blue and green around him, witha hand that had an eye in its palm.
The day made an immediate impression on me andwhen I got home out came the paints as I was eager to paintsome more!
Great day!

Did you dress up for World Book Day? Surely you musthave because there are so many pictures
of the costumes; which are BRILLIANT!During this year’s book week the juniors had to dress
up as a character form their favourite poemand infants as their favourite nursery rhyme.
We had a competition on the best handwriting withjuniors writing with a pen and infants with a pencil.
We also had the usual hot seating competition.

The Lego Movie is totally awesome! Thegraphical detail, as it isn’t computerised andactually animated, is amazing. With a song‘Everything is Awesome’ as the theme tuneeverything is awesome. After seeing the filmI was so inspired I went home and spent twoand a half hours building with it.
The plot for the movie is so clever; it isbasically about a war against followinginstructions and gluing Lego, versus buildingfrom your mind and rebuilding again and again. An ordinary builder, Emmitt fulfils a prophecy tobeat Lord Business (the bad guy). Emmitt meetsloads of cool people along the way such as,President Lincoln, Batman and many more.
Wild Style is another main character andalthough she is quite opposite to Emmitt in
personality, they are both on the same team.My top quote is from Batman, ‘I only build in
black...and very dark grey’ and another good onehe says is, ‘We’re going to hit the sun yeh, but it’s goingto look cool!’
Emmitt has an idea, which is a double decker couch;people make fun of it and skit him. However it savesthem in the end therefore it is a key clue to LordBusiness’s weakness.
If you are really good at paying attention to detailsyou’ll love this film; so will people from the age of threewho have a taste for comedy, fun, and adventure. Therereally are no weaknesses and therefore it is 5*****

ReviewsAWESOME
Theatre review Have you read the historical novel,Private Peaceful? It is the story of aneighteen year old soldier (PrivateTommo Peaceful) and his reflection onhis life and his last night on earth. He isbasically telling the story of morethan 300 soldiers who wereshot for cowardiceduring World War 1. I think SimonReade (thedirector) got theplot muddled upas in the book,Charlie Peaceful(Tommo’s olderbrother), got shotinstead.
As it is one bigsoliloquy, with onlyone actor, it is anamazing performance byAndy Daniels. Considering he is justout of acting school it was an ultra-amazing performance! He must have
said over 7,000 words! The set wasminimalist; however, he used it to greateffect like when the bed was a wire fenceabove a trench. Therefore it had thesame effect as lots of items.
The lighting and sound effects wentperfectly with it, as the flashbacks
to the early stages of the war, with shells exploding were
perfectly timed and it wasvery dramatic when hewas shot – his headdropped and it allwent dark.
His few props werehis watch (that hisbrother gave him) and
his tin helmet. He onlyreally used the helmet
once, when he was in thetrench. However his watch
was used repeatedly, after everyflashback.
Personally I think that the intervalspoilt it, as it built up so much power
and then dropped it all down the drainwhen the interval came. If the intervalhad not happened I believe that thesecond half would have been morepowerful.
I think it was truly amazing; it had justone weakness – the interval. Thestrengths were the lighting, acting andsound. It would appeal to history lovers, book readers and children over the ageof eight. The play is amazing; now watch it!

Captain Phillips is a true storybased on an American captaincalled, Richard Phillips (TomHanks), whose cargo ship isattacked by Somali pirates. Thefilm is about him and his crewfighting for survival against thepirates.
It has you hooked from theminute the pirates are chasingCaptain Phillips. The pirate,Captain Muse (Barkhad Abdi)plays an amazing role and itlooks like it is not a film but isactually happening. The storyhas a great and dramatic end.In real life the actor, Barkhadwas a limo driver, who hadnever acted before this film. Hemanaged to pick up a BAFTAaward and was in the runningfor an Oscar for best supporting
actor. I think he and the rest ofthe cast did an amazing jobwith Paul Greengrasses’sdirecting and Billy Ray’s script.
During the film when Musehas the opportunity he showskindness to his captive, CaptainPhillips. The final 30 minuteshave you stuck on the edge ofyour seat, as it is literally amatter of minutes...I won’t tellyou when; but my advice wouldbe to watch it and find out, as itis 5*****.
There are no weaknesses asit is easy to follow. It wouldappeal to anyone from seven –60 years of age, as it is anaction thriller. The film is a 12Abecause it has one use ofstrong language, some bloodyviolence and threat.
DVD review by Lawrie O’Brien
Captain Phillips
This film is an epic 3D fantasy film and it isage 11/12a, which is ok for your child if theyare 10 and over. It is set in Japan and it isabout samurais, demons and witches.
The story line is set out and there is a halfblood, who is a demon and a humancombined. When the half blood was a child aking and his army find him in the woods bythe demon’s cave so they think he is a
demon! The main character is played by Keanu
Reeves; who was also in the Matrix movies.I think this is a brilliant film; it is a fighting filmand because it has action in it, your eyes willbe glued to the screen!!!It has got some goodactors, as you knowone all ready.

Sporting glory is something that the UK’s numberone tennis player is used to, but here at Nutty News we’renot so sure he wants to make a habit of getting slimed. We think Andy would prefer to just play on the greenstuff and not get gunged with green slime.
It was all a Twitter down inMin-y-Don this year, but littledid parents know that thesecret tweeter was in fact theresident spy.
Yes this snapshot landed onthe editorial desk of NuttyNews and its stony look led toan undercover investigation. Itmay seem like a tall story butwe are convinced that this isindeed a photograph of thesecret agent who infiltratedthe group and took to comicstyle tweeting.
We will keep you posted ofany further sightings!

During Safer Internet Day in February weorganised our own school survey aboutonline technology with pupils and teachers. Here is a roundup of what they said:
What we like about the internet• Instant access to information• There is so much information at the touch of button• It’s very useful to find facts.• Very useful to order resources• Fun games
• Keeping in contact with friends & family• Finding places to visit• Sharing information• Changed the way schools can provide education• iPads to support the whiteboard rely on the internet• You Tube• Comparing prices
What we would like to see the
internet do in the future
• New games
• 3D printers
• Be able to speak into the computer
• Transparent computers
• To be able to watch a Minecraft game, press
a button and be in the game yourself.
• Automatically driven cars to give more time
for my marking.
• Help make heating cheaper
• A back catalogue of cartoons that I watched
when I was little
• I would like to just ‘think’ about the
information I want and for the internet to
read my thoughts; so that I don’t need to key
in anything.
• Higher safety levels
• More restrictions
• An app to create recipes for you from the
food you have in your fridge/kitchen
• Birthday reminders and diary entries
For Safer Internet Day 2014 in February we spent the day learningabout e safety. I wrote a non-chronological report for my learninglog about cyber bullying.
Cyber bullying, strong word isn’t it? Did you know three in fivepeople are cyber bullied every year? Cyber bullying is whenpeople send abusive messages to you on line and think it is funnyand cool. Melancholy is how you could feel if you are being cyberbullied.
The worst thing about cyber bullying is it can happenanywhere, not just on a computer but also on mobile phones. If you were getting cyber cullied you should show your mum ordad. One thing you can do is block the person who is sending themessages.
An example of what can happen is the story about Jack. Hewas cyber bullied when he started his new school. He gave hisphone number to his friends and they passed it on to other peoplewho were not his friends and were bullies. Jack went homehoping to get some friendly messages from his new pals at hisnew school, but what he came home to were lots of abusivemessages. This continued for three weeks. Eventually jack toldCyber bullying Ambassadors who helped Jack overcome thebullying. Now Jack helps others in his school that may experiencecyber bullying.
On Safer Internet Day the theme was ‘Let’s create a betterinternet together’. In our school we all got to learn about how tobe safer on line and Class 3 created posters about internet safety.

JUICY NEWSTaking a peek at our favourite recent news stories
Art Club started in January and is ledby Mrs Jodie Scott, a parent of a Class3 pupil along with Mrs Smith ateaching assistant. It takes place everyThursday in Class 3 during lunch timeand allows children who love art to domore of it. Art and craft are reallypopular in our school so the extra clubis brilliant.
Mostly girls attend the club and theyall really like being able to develop theirart skills and be as creative as theywant. The first project was makingcollages, which involved rolling ink overthem at the end. The collages, eventhough they might have looked a littleweird printing them, came outfabulous.
CRAZY COLLAGES
Professional children’s poet and performer Ian Blandvisited school in March. Ian is also Poet in Residence atWigan Football Club. Infant and junior pupils took part increative workshops in which Ian helped children to writetheir own poems. It was a fantastic opportunity for childrenand teachers alike to share together in the world of poetry.Ian soon had the children captivated reciting a number ofhis poems with his great storytelling skills.
The inspirational day followed a week-long celebration ofbooks and poems in school with Ian’s visit providing a funfinale!

On Monday the 13th January Alicja and I went on a visitto Lathom St James’ to meet a girl called Maja. We wentthere to see Maja so that we can help her understand moreEnglish as she comes from Poland. When we arrived wewere welcomed by the head teacher Mrs Albion and MrsTither. While meeting Maja we also met her mother Ewaand her two sisters Alicja and Nikola. We all went throughto Maja’s classroom and then went upstairs.
We entered the staffroom and then I started translatingPolish to English and the other way round while my sisterwent off playing with Alicja. I had to do lots of talking inEnglish and Polish and I also re wrote a note from MrsTither in Polish to show Ewa how she could help Maja withher English. A few minutes before the end we had a picturetaken and we got a few pieces of stationery from MrsAlbion and that was the time we had to go back to school. The visit was interesting and I really enjoyed it especiallymeeting Maja.

Who was your inspiration for the year2013 and why? That’s a brilliant question. It would seemobvious for me to say Bradley Wiggins orChris Froome (Tour De France winner),however it would have to be my mum. Avery special person; she was kind, lovingand encouraging.
Do you speak any other languages? Not very well and it is something I reallywish I could do and had got the opportunityto learn when I was at school.
