CLUB SPOTLIGHTWOMEN’S CLUB GROWS IN VALENCIA LAKES Submitted by Marilyn Kuff ner, President

As the gardens grew in spring, so did our Club. Our membership is up to 170 and attendance at our meetings has continued to grow. At our April meeting, Linda Barrett shared with us how all her hard work blossomed into the magic we read in her books. May brought us the glitz and glamour of our fashion show. Our models strutted down the runway as though we were at New York Fashion Week. Good friends, lunch and shopping completed our day. Everyone had a good time and we raised over $5,000 for our scholarship program. Great job Ladies! At our May 30th meeting, we presented fi ve scholarships for a total of $10,500. Four at $2,000 each went to graduating seniors from

Lennard High School. Th is year, we added a recurring scholarship to one of our previous recipients; Garrett Mulholland received $2500 for his sophomore year at the University of Florida. As the summer heats up, we will continue to provide programs to keep us cool. June 26th is our sold out pizza party and bingo at East Coast Pizza. July 25th will be our regular meeting. Betsy Alberts from the South Shore Regional Library will introduce us to the study of genealogy. Time to fi nd out if we have any interesting or scandalous ancestors. August is still in the planning stage. Look for the Club updates from the Lifestyle offi ce for further information on those programs. Th e fall is full of promise with more varied programs to come. Hope all of you have a safe, enjoyable and cool summer vacation.

THE VALENCIA LAKES FISHING CLUB — DEDICATED TO FISHING EDUCATION AND ACTIVITIESSubmitted by Gary Spieler

Th e Valencia Lakes Fishing Club (VLFC) is one of the oldest clubs in our community. Our club is “Dedicated to Fishing Education and Activities” and to FUN! As of this article we boast over 103 members and the administration makes sure to include everyone’s interests in the scope of our activities. Our annual dues are only $25/person or $40/member with a signifi cant other. Dues are principally used to help fund our numerous events with reserves used to re-stock those lakes that need it.Our events include; Bar-B-Q at E.G. Simmons Park and Bar-B-Q at Ft. Desoto. We have night fi shing at the Skyway Bridge as well

as trips to the bridge during day time hours. Alan “Bassman” Berkov offi ciates “Golf Cart Fishing” right here at VL in our wonderfully stocked lakes. Th rough the members of the Freedom Boat Club, members team up with those that do not have boats to get out into Tampa Bay and catch Sea Trout, Red Fish and many more species. Twice a year we charter a huge catamaran. Th e fi shing is great, the chaise lounges in the open air (with a bottle of wine) adds to those that want to “cruise” as well as fi sh and to make this a perfect day. One of our proudest accomplishments has been the sponsoring of the Joel Linky Fishing Derby. Each Christmas time the VLFC teaches

our grandchildren about the wonders of fi shing. Th e VLFC has stocked the lakes with Large Mouth Bass and they grow larger each year. Th is Fishing Derby has become one of the highlights of our community. Finally, we teach “Fishing 101 class” for beginners so you’ll never feel like a “fi sh out of water” when you become a member. We meet the

fi rst Tuesday of each month in the clubhouse. Come as our guest to a few meetings and you’ll enjoy the comradery we share.

TRAVEL CLUB TRIP TO PARIS & THE HEART OF NORMANDY Combine the magic of Paris with the beauty of France’s Norman countryside and voilà! Th e Valencia

Lakes Travel Club travelers went on their fourth river cruise in May. We arrived in Paris, the romance capital of the world, and journeyed through to the heart of Normandy on a Viking 8-Day River Cruise. We enjoyed the timeless beauty and grace of the Old World along the Rhine river and spent time in the splendor of Paris’ culture — visiting the Eiff el Tower, the Louvre, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Opera House and the Montmartre Art district. We then departed for the medieval city of Rouen where we saw the 14th-century courthouse in which Joan of Arc was sentenced to death and the nearby Market Square where she was martyred. We walked the cobblestone streets of provincial Vernon and took a short ride into the town of Giverny, where Claude Monet resided from 1883 until his

death in 1926. We enjoyed strolling in the beautiful gardens and seeing the stone farmhouse where he lived and worked. On our tour of the historic beaches of Normandy

we drove past Gold Beach, Courseulles sur Mer and Juno Beach, visited Omaha Beach, the American Military Cemetery and Arromanches Debarkment D-Day Museum. As we stood on the Normandy Beaches, site of the famous Allied invasion on D-Day, a special “tribute/thank you” to the US Veterans who were on our trip was made by the French at the American Cemetery. Th e Cemetery visit was a very moving experience where almost 10,000 servicemen and four women

are buried. We each placed a rose on a soldier’s grave. Th e last port we went to was in the small town of Les Andelys, known for its imposing castle, Château Gaillard. Built in 1196 by

Richard the Lionheart, the castle is located on top of a big hill overlooking the river and the town. It was a relaxing smooth ride down the river Seine. Th is Paris to the Heart Normandy cruise was an unforgettable journey.

VALENCIA LAKES WOODWORKERS CLUB DELIVERS!Carl Aber/President of the Valencia Lakes Woodworkers Club

Wimauma Elementary School, K-5, received 25 wooden toys for the kindergarten classes. Th e toys were designed by Jim Harrington and built by Carl Aber. Joyce Vigorito spent many hours decorating the wheeled toys for the children. Everyone at the school was quite impressed with the workmanship and the exciting colors.Les Pressey built six raised garden beds at the J. Vince

Th ompson Elementary School in Ruskin. Laura Schilling, teacher at the school and a Valencia Lakes resident, received a grant for the materials. Th e Valencia Lakes Woodworkers Club provided design and labor services along with a few hundred decking screws! On April 9th, at their request, we were glad to supply

Wimauma Elementary School with fi ve outdoor benches so they can have outdoor classes on nice days. Th e benches were the work of the Club President, Carl Aber. Th e picture shows Carl trying out a bench in the school courtyard. When you purchase a domino holder, playing card holder or any other item made by the members of the VL Woodworkers Club you are helping the local schools. Th e proceeds, after deducting for materials, from every product we sell, go to benefi t the local schools. Want to be part of our next charitable project for the local schools? Come join the Woodworkers Club at our meetings on the second Tuesday of each month from 10 am to 12 pm at the clubhouse.

(L to R): Mr. Ismael Lebron-Bravo, Principal; Mr. Ryan Sealy, Kindergarten Teacher; Joyce Vigorito, dedicated member of Valencia Lakes Woodworkers Club and Carl Aber, President of Valencia Lakes Woodworkers Club.

BLOOMIN’ NEWS FROM THE GARDEN CLUBValencia Lakes’ very own Jo Donohoe, Garden Club member and a third generation fl orist, provided a very

special presentation at our May meeting. As an experienced Floral Event Designer from England and New York, Jo has been an integral part of the Garden Club executive committee. At our recent meeting, open to all residents of Valencia Lakes, she graciously volunteered to demonstrate a number of ways to transform an ordinary, inexpensive bouquet of fl owers purchased at the supermarket into a breath-taking fl oral design. We are very lucky to have such a talented and generous resident in our midst. At the conclusion of our meeting, the winner of the 50/50 raffl e and the winners of Jo’s striking fl oral arrangements were announced. If you’re anxious to see another of Jo’s fabulous presentations, or if you missed the last one, you’ll have the opportunity in November to see a presentation on holiday arrangements, just in time for Th anksgiving.

THE AFRICAN & LATINO HERITAGE CLUB JAZZED IT UP! On May 22, Club members transported guests to the sights, sounds, and scenes of a jazz club

experience. Quaint tables were adorned by centerpieces reminiscent of jazz musicians. Guests settled in with their own libations while tasting a complimentary spread of tapas and hors d’ oeuvres. Th e sold out event featured two live music sets with Valencia Lake’s own Mickey O’Bryan, aka “Ivanhoe,” and Charlene McClain-Hopewell, aka “CocoHope”. Ivanhoe kicked off the fi rst set with an energetic rendition of Dave Brubeck’s, Take Five and CocoHope sent us home in a whimsical mood with her rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s, Th em Th ere Eyes. Jazz it Up was indeed a special evening.

THE ITALIAN-AMERICAN CLUB OF VALENCIA LAKES – 2015Th e Italian-American Club (IAC) has had another exciting year. To date, we have 284 members and have hosted some enjoyable and

well-attended events. We serve the entire Valencia Lakes community and seek to highlight the Italian Culture and life. New members are always welcome and enjoy discounted rates at our special events. We kicked off the year in January with a Conversational Italian Language group, led by Liliana George. On January 27, we fi lled the

entire Allegria Italian Restaurant in Brandon with IAC members and guests. Our group was also entertained by a singer that evening. In March, Chef Cinzia Cripe prepared a tasty lasagna dinner for our annual “Pasta Night”. We received many compliments on the delicious

and plentiful food that was served. Th anks to wine importer, Andrea Posani, residents enjoyed a delicious sampling of seven Italian wines at our April 27 Wine Tasting event. Th ree whites and four reds were featured, along with imported cheeses and olives, grapes and dark chocolate to enhance the experience. Guests were aff orded the opportunity to purchases the wines at steeply discounted prices. Our upcoming event is Pizza Night which takes place on June 15. In appreciation for our members, this members-only event is free. Th e IAC is fortunate to have a dedicated president, board and member volunteers who make these events possible, and membership is open to all residents. Grazie!
