BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Julian T. (Thaddeus) White was born on August 12, 1937 in Alexandria, Louisiana. He was the son of Reverend W. A. (Willie Augustus) White and Juliet Pappas White. Julian’s grandfather, Reverend James Wesley White, baptized Julian at Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church in Alexandria. After graduating from Peabody High School in Alexandria in 1955, Julian attended the University of Illinois in Urbana for his undergraduate studies in architecture. It was there that he met Loretta M. Jones, who was originally from Brockley, Massachusetts. The two married on June 23, 1961. After finishing his undergraduate studies in 1961, White began working at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. as an assistant professor of architecture. During this time, he also was a partner in the Hunt Thurman and Associates architectural firm in Baton Rouge. In 1964, he returned to the University of Illinois to begin his graduate studies in architecture and to work as an instructor and graduate teaching assistant. He also worked as a design architect for Roy D. Murphy & Associates in Urbana while he was a graduate student. After finishing his graduate studies in 1966, he returned to Southern University to work as an associate professor and as acting head of the architecture department there. Soon after that, he accepted a position as a visiting associate professor at the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama from 1967 to 1968. After finishing his teaching position there, he moved to Houston, Texas to work as a design architect for Caudill, Rowlett, Scott (CRS) from 1968 to 1971. He then returned to Baton Rouge to accept a position at Louisiana State University (LSU) as an assistant professor of architecture. In accepting the position, he became the first African-American faculty member at LSU. He became an associate professor in 1973 and formed the White & Kaple Architectural Association in 1978. He retired from LSU in 2004. After retiring, he continued to work as an architect until his death on July 19, 2011. White participated in professional organizations throughout his career, holding several board, committee, and juror positions in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) at the local, regional, and national levels. He also served as vice chairman of the Louisiana State Architects Selection Board (1990-1991) and as president of the Louisiana State Board of Architectural Examiners (2006-2007). Many of his architectural pursuits and projects involved Louisiana Baptist churches and Louisiana schools.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Papers consist mainly of materials from White’s architectural projects throughout his professional career. While most of his projects were located in Louisiana, he also participated in projects outside of Louisiana, especially when he worked for CRS. Architectural project materials include office-type project files (for example, correspondence with clients, consultants, and contractors; transmittal sheets; bidding documents; project and planning notes; invoices; and project schedules), project manuals and specifications, a variety of architectural design and plan formats for project structures (whiteprints; blueprints; blueline prints; and photocopies), shop drawings and submittals (of various sizes), AIA project agreements, permit documents, and photographic items. Architectural designs and plans exist in a several different sizes: letter-size, legal-size, oversize, and rolled. These designs and plans can be found within the office-type project files (letter-size and legal-size designs and plans) and in separate storage containers (for oversize and rolled designs and plans). Architectural project materials are arranged by location, structure name, and then project (as White originally arranged the materials). Materials within most project file folders are arranged chronologically. Additionally, papers include educational and teaching materials (from White’s time as an instructor/professor at Southern University, the University of Illinois, and LSU) and personal papers. Personal papers include personal correspondence, resume and portfolio materials, sermons and speeches, promotional materials, printed materials, and other general notes, sketches, and designs.

Subseries contains architectural designs and plans (rolled) for an office building construction project. Subseries 7. Heritage Funeral Director’s Facility, 1997-1999, undated Facility located in New Orleans, La. Subseries contains materials related to a remodeling project of an existing historic structure to house a new funeral service facility.

Project files consist of correspondence (client, consultants, and contractors), transmittal sheets, proposals, price estimates, bidding documents, invoices, notes, calculations, printed materials from manufacturers, and architectural designs and plans (letter-size and oversize). Additional materials related to the project are two project manuals (December 10, 1997; December 17, 1997), AIA agreements, AIA payment certificates, shop drawings (letter-size), and submittals. A presentation printout (October 11, 1997) within the project files includes information on the project’s existing site and building conditions, architectural program, and schematic designs. Correspondence includes a letter to White from Malcolm Gibson (of Heritage Funeral Directors, Inc.) in which Gibson thanks White for his architectural services (November 22, 1999). Subseries 8. Kelso Redirection Center, 1999 Center located in Alexandria, La. Subseries contains a project manual and specifications for a re-roofing project (October 21, 1999). Subseries 9. Lecompte Multi-Purpose Center, Inc., 1994-1995 Structure designed for location in Lecompte, La. Subseries contains a master plan manual depicting the architectural program, schematic design, and specifications of the project (September 2, 1994; revised January 6, 1995). Subseries 10. Live Oak Missionary Baptist Church, 1927, 1969, 1983-1995, undated Church located in Alexandria, La. Subseries contains materials related to an alterations and additions project for the Church. Project files consist of correspondence (client, consultants, and contractors), transmittal sheets, proposals, price estimates, bidding documents, notes, calculations, and architectural designs and plans (letter-size, legal-size, oversize, and rolled). Additional materials related to the project are project manuals (May 20, 1994), fire marshal review documents, an AIA agreement, AIA payment certificates, and photocopies of historical documents.

Correspondence within the project files shows that White met with Reverend James Hardison, Sr. to present a proposal for architectural services to renovate the Church (May 25, 1990). A letter to White from Hardison shows that Phase I of project was completed (August 7, 1991). Another letter to White from Hardison shows that there was a delay in starting Phase II (June 18, 1993). Hardison then informs White in a later letter that the Church must put the renovation project on an indefinite hold (December 28, 1994). Photocopies of historical documents include a deed (original deed dated 28, 1927), a mortgage note (original note dated May 5, 1969; payment stamp dated July 11, 1983), and the Articles of Incorporation for the Church (original articles dated July 25, 1984; Secretary of State certification page dated July 31, 1984).

Subseries 11. McKowen Missionary Baptist Church, 1974-1976 Church located in Baton Rouge, La. Subseries contains a specifications manual for a project titled “McKowen Missionary Baptist Church No. 2.” A. C. McCrory is listed at the pastor (May 10, 1974). Also included are architectural designs and plans (rolled) for the project. Subseries 12. Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1986-2000, undated Church located in Alexandria, La. Subseries contains materials related to three different projects: an alterations project to the choir and rostrum (1986-1987), a renovation project of the bathroom facilities and vestibule (1989-1991), and a final additions and alterations project for an activity center (1996-2000). Project files for the first project (1986-1987) consist of some correspondence and architectural designs, plans, and sketches (letter-size and oversize). Project files for the second project (1989-1991) consist of correspondence (client, consultants, and contractors), transmittal sheets, proposals, price estimates, bidding documents, notes, calculations, and architectural designs and plans (letter-size, legal-size, and oversize). Additional materials related to the project include a project manual (December 6, 1989) and shop drawings (letter-size and oversize).

Project files for the third project (1996-2000) consist of correspondence (client, consultants, and contractors), transmittal sheets, proposals, price estimates, bidding documents, notes, calculations, and architectural designs and plans (letter-size, legal-size, oversize, and rolled). Additional materials related to the project include a master plan manual (May 14, 1997), two project manuals (July 6, 1999), and fire marshal review documents. There are also AIA agreements for all three projects, and there are AIA payment certificates for the second project (1989-1991).

Subseries 1. Teaching Materials, 1960-1967, 1980-2002, undated Subseries contains materials that White used for teaching his architecture classes at Southern University, the University of Illinois, and LSU. Materials consist of class syllabi, lecture notes (including architectural sketches), class handouts, transparencies, outlines, homework and project assignments, exams and quizzes (blank and answer keys), course/instructor evaluation materials, and examples of students’ work. Subseries also contains general educational materials, like photocopied excerpts from articles and books, program information from other college architectural programs, and class notes for unidentified classes. Of particular interest is an exam that White completed as an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois (oversize; April 11, 1960). Subseries 2. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Competition Materials, 1994-1995, undated Subseries contains materials from White’s participation as a jury member for the Competition (in which participants submitted designs for a memorial monument). Materials consist of competition notes, a list of participants, competition handouts, qualification requests, and participants’ letters of interest and competition designs.

Series IV. Personal Papers, 1964-2010, undated

Subseries 1. Personal Correspondence, 1967-2008, undated Letters of interest include a memo from CRS discussing White’s ease of fitting in at the firm (June 9, 1970), a letter from White to William G. McMinn confirming his acceptance of an assistant professor of architecture position at LSU (August 15, 1971), a letter from McMinn to White regarding a salary increase (August 22, 1972), and a letter from Dr. Trent James to White thanking him for designing the Family Medical Center years ago (August 16, 1974).

Subseries 2. Career Materials, 1967-2010, undated Subseries mostly contains White’s resumes and portfolio materials. Items of interest include aerial photographs of the construction of Governors State University (August 28, 1972) and a newspaper clipping depicting a design for a proposed clock tower at Southern University (undated; materials located in portfolio binder 2). Additional materials in the subseries include award and certification materials. Items of interest include White’s award ribbon from the 1995 Faculty Awards Reception at LSU and a notarized copy of White’s application to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (June 14, 1968).

Subseries 3. Sermons and Speeches, 1982-1990, undated Subseries contains sermons (including drafts and notes) that White gave, most likely at Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church in Alexandria. There is also a speech that White gave

to the members and friends of Historic Cheneyville, Inc. on historic preservation and conservation.

Subseries 4. White and Kaple Promotional Materials, 1980, undated Subseries contains promotional materials related to the White and Kaple Architectural Association in Baton Rouge. Materials include logo designs and correspondence advertising services to potential clients. Of particular interest is a promotional letter from White and Kaple to Baton Rouge Mayor-President W. W. (Woodrow “Woody” Wilson) Dumas (April 23, 1980). Subseries 5. General Printed Materials, 1964-1999, undated Printed materials of interest include a funeral program for White’s uncle, James W. White, Jr. (the service took place at Amazon Baptist Church in Bunkie, La.); a house corporation charter from the LSU black student organization Harambe to establish a black cultural center on campus (undated); a pamphlet titled “History of the Louisiana Baptist State Convention / The 104th Annual Session / From July 1976 to July 1977;” and an issue of LSU Today (oversize; April 30, 1993) which features White in a group of faculty award winners. Other printed materials cover architectural topics, charrettes, and various Baptist churches.
