THE HUMAN VOICE.

The most powerful sound in the world.

Probably the only sound that can….

Page 5: Julian treasure

…start a war…

Page 6: Julian treasure

…or say I love you.

Page 7: Julian treasure

And yet when people speak…….

And yet when people speak…….

Page 9: Julian treasure

Why is that?

Page 10: Julian treasure

How can we speakpowerfully to make change

Page 11: Julian treasure

We can start by dealing with…..

But is there a positive way to think about this?

Page 28: Julian treasure

Yes, there is.

Page 29: Julian treasure

There are 4 really powerful foundations that we can stand on if

we want our speech to be powerful and make change in the

world.

Now the human voice can be thought of as a toolbox.

Page 43: Julian treasure

Now the human voice can be thought of as a toolbox.

A toolbox that very few people have ever opened.

Page 44: Julian treasure

Some of these tools can increase the power of your speaking.

Page 45: Julian treasure

Let’s take a look.

Page 46: Julian treasure

1. Register

This refers to the range of tones in the human voice. These registers include modal voice, vocal fry,

falsetto and the whistle register.

Page 47: Julian treasure

2. Timbre

This refers to the quality of tone that distinguishes different types of sound production such as

voices and musical instruments.

Page 48: Julian treasure

3. Prosody

This is concerned with those elements of speech that are not individual vowels

or consonants but are properties of syllables and larger units of speech.

Page 49: Julian treasure

4. Pace

This is the speed with which somebody speaks. For example sometimes speaking quickly and then slowing down

can emphasize what is being said.

Page 50: Julian treasure

5. Pitch

How high or low someone’s voice is , is usually referredto as the pitch. Sometimes higher pitch can be used to

add exclamation to a point.

Page 51: Julian treasure

6. Volume

Volume can be used to get the audience’s attention byraising the volume at a point to show excitement or

lower the volume at a point to stress focus on something.

Page 52: Julian treasure

Register

Timbre

Prosody

Pace Pitch

Volume

Of course, where all this comes into play is when you have something important to do.

It might be……

Page 53: Julian treasure

…..standing on a stage and giving a talk……

Page 54: Julian treasure

…proposing marriage…..

Page 55: Julian treasure

…asking for a raise…

Page 56: Julian treasure

Or whatever it may be…

Page 57: Julian treasure

If it’s really important, you owe it to yourself to look at this toolbox and the engine it’s goingto work on.

Page 58: Julian treasure

And no engine works wellwithout being warmed up.

Page 59: Julian treasure

And no engine works wellwithout being warmed up.

So always remember to warm up!

Page 60: Julian treasure

So in closing….This is where we are.

But if we were speaking powerfully,

Or to make it a bit larger,

Conscious

Designing

Page 63: Julian treasure

What would the world be like if we werecreating sound consciously, consuming sound

consciously and designing all our environments consciously for sound?

Page 64: Julian treasure

That would be a world that would sound…

Page 65: Julian treasure

That would be a world that would sound…

………beautiful.

Page 66: Julian treasure

And understanding…

Page 67: Julian treasure

And understanding…

….would be the norm.
