Stephanie K with Dan Maier Trio$10.00 Saturday 8/06 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

Northeast Ohio Native and jazz vocalist extraordinaire returns home fromEurope for gig at Nighttown. With The Dan Maier Trio.

Playing music from her CD "Subterranean Dream" and more!

With the 2007 release of “Subterranean Dream”, Stephanie K seemed to emergelike the Venus of jazz“ with a fully-developed style that is more in keeping with thatof a veteran artist. Her voice has a presence that immediately captures yourattention, drawing you into her sphere of musical influence, emitting flashes ofAretha Franklin, Carol King, Diana Krall and Billie Holiday. But Stephanie K is noderivative jazz singer; she is a true original, and she has at her command animpressive level of musicianship, with the phrasing, intonation and time sense ofthe seasoned jazz musician. Stephanie K’s musical tastes run to rich, rarely-heardballads that are brought to life by her torchy vocal style, fresh renderings ofcanonical popular tunes, vivid transformations of chestnuts from the Americansongbook, and original compositions that hover somewhere between nostalgia andmelancholy, only to surprise her listeners with a fast talking tale woven with wit andinnuendo.

“Subterranean Dream” was co-produced by pianist Aaron Goldberg and bassistReuben Rogers, who along with Eric Harland create a nearly perfect complement toStephanie’s vocal style, surrounding her with a rich texture that rarely intrudes, expanding on her implicit harmonic and rhythmic statements.

In 2010 Stephanie K served up a cocktail of winter evergreens and traditionalholiday classics, this time remaining on the European side of the pond. Therecording features custom penned arrangements for string quartet, jazz ensemble, and voice. Included in this mix are also a work by contemporary composer PatriciaBarber and the title track, “In the Silence of the Snowfall” written by Stephanie K.From warm and cheerful bossa vibes to melancholy blues, and contemplative jazzballads, this recording offers something for every winter mood.

Dan Maier

Dan Maier attended Berklee School and New England Conservatory and studiedjazz piano with Lennie Tristano, Jaki Byard, Ran Blake, and classical piano withAndreus Kuprevicius, George Haddad, and Margaret “Madame” Chaloff.

Over the years in New York City and Ohio, he has worked with dozens ofinternational arists including Benny Carter, Gary Burton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson,Junior Cook, Cheryl Bentine of Manhattan Transfer, Nicole Henry, Benny Golson,Alexis Cole, Jackie Ryan, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Eric Alexander to name just afew. “We all know the music of Peter, Paul and Mary—folk classics that remain thesoundtrack for generations. But our patrons were thrilled to experience therelevancy of that music, and how it resonates through today’s headlines, whenPeter Yarrow brought his solo show to the Tower Theatre. It was so much more thana nostalgia show. Peter connected with the sold-out audience in ways that went wellbeyond a normal concert: he encouraged sing-alongs and audience participation;he signed autographs at intermission; he personally greeted each and every one ofour VIPs and members; he even auctioned two personalized guitars to raise moneyfor our educational outreach programs.

Peter turned our theatre into his living room. He created an inclusive atmosphere, encouraging each of us to change our part of the world. It was a memorableevening rooted in the historic milestones of his past, yet focused on the current

Cleveland Vocalist extraordinaire back on the stage atNighttown!

Featuring: Doris Long-vocals, Joe Hunter-piano, Dallas Coffey-acoustic bass, Val Kent-drums, & Special Guest Al Fuller-sax.Doris Long is a Cleveland treasure. Like a fine wine, rather than diminish with age,her voice has grown richer and deeper with time and offers a complexity that drawsfrom 49 years of performing. Her debut CD release Long Overdue is a 17 songcollection of Great American Songbook standards that delivers a smooth finish thatlingers long after the final notes have been heard.

Doris has been making music from the time that she could speak. As a child shetaught herself to sing by listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee.Throughout her youth she dreamed of a career, but held off fulfilling her ambitionuntil she had raised three sons. In 1963, piano player Saul Lucas invited her to sit inwith him on weekends, opening the door to a singing career that continues to thisday. Doris has sung with the best musicians on Cleveland’s jazz scene, including therenowned pianist “Ace” Carter after he retired from the Count Basie Orchestra.Rumor has it that he came out of retirement after hearing Doris sing. She has alsoperformed with Hank Geer at Sammy’s, Skeets Ross at the legendary TheatricalGrill, Buddy Griebel, Pete Selvaggio, Buddy Sullivan and Vince Mastro to name afew. Doris was the featured vocalist of The Musical Theater Project’s very first Songis You! concert in 2002. For the past 8 years her Friday night trio has featured twoof Cleveland’s finest musicians, pianist Joe Hunter and bassist Dallas Coffey.

Tonight Doris is joined by Joe Hunter, Dallas Coffey, and Val Kent, who appear onher recent release "Long Overdue". Joe and Dallas have played in support of bignames like David Sanborn, David “Fathead” Newman, Scott Hamilton and manyothers. Joe is on the Jazz studies faculty of Tri-C College. He is a Nighttown favoriteand also plays piano in the group Russian Blue with violinist Lev Polyakin of theCleveland Orchestra. Dallas is in demand as a versatile bassist. He can be heard ona Long Overduewide range of recording projects with artists such as Glenn Davis,Anne Cochran, Alex Bevan and Pat Dailey. Joe and Dallas produced two CD’stogether named East of the Sun and From This Moment On with drummers Val Kentand Paul Samuels.

Veteran drummer Val Kent has played drums with many of the greats including TheMills Brother, The O’Jays, and Nelson Eddy and has done thousands of recordingsessions in his career. Rounding out the group is Al Fuller on tenor sax. Al majoredin music at BGSU in Ohio and then played in the 75th US Army Band in Ft. Belvoir,

in music at BGSU in Ohio and then played in the 75th US Army Band in Ft. Belvoir,VA. In the early sixties he played in Cleveland with such greats as LaBert Ellis on B-3and Red Top Young on piano.
