The year started with a clear message to all staff, that the key priority would be on improving student learning. The division continues to work at providing and using technology effec-tively and have added a number of active boards in their classrooms.

“Our goal is to have an active board in every classroom. We have been taking a look at programming it for all learners, no matter their talents or abilities be-cause our goal is to graduate all of our students,” said Dianne McBeth, superin-tendent of the schools.

There has also been a big focus on im-proving the high school completion rate, and there is a task force this year that’s done a lot of work to identify the prac-tices that are effective and have given dif-ferent strategies to work on.

The board of trustees offered a student forum called ‘speak out’. Students had a one-day training session and then had the forum.

“We had students who facilitated them, and they did a fantastic job,” said McBeth.

There has been a lot of progress on the modernization project in Drumheller. It was a big project for the division and cost close to $21,000,000.

“It was a 40 year-old school and it hadn’t had anything done to it in all that time. It’s actually going to be completed ahead of schedule and we should be moving the kids in around Christmas,” said McBeth.

All of the East High favourites made an appear-ance when the Grade six students at Brentwood Elementary put on a production of High School Musical. As a part of the year-end celebrations the Grade six graduating students put on a production for parents, teachers, and anyone who wants to come down to see it.

“For years it’s become a tradition in our school to do a year end musical,” said music teacher Carolyn Steeves.

The students, over 50 of them, looked through a list of different musicals offered by Music Theatre International, New York. They then had to vote, and for this group of kids it was an easy choice.

“We just thought it would be really fun, and most of us already knew most of the songs,” said Britney Davidson, who played the role of Taylor McKessie, leader of the scholastic decathlon team.

“Some of the other ones (productions) we have

done have been a lot harder because they had even more stuff to learn. This one, they at least knew the songs,” said Steeves.

All of the students had to audition for their roles, and six were picked to play the main roles. Despite only having six main roles, there were parts avail-able for everyone.

“Everybody is something, there are about 20 peo-ple who speak and everybody else is in a clique. That’s one reason it’s a really good play is because there’s lots of stuff for the other kids to do,” said Steeves.

The main characters rehearsed up to twice a day, beginning in mid April, during recess and lunch.

“I have been outside two or three times (since rehearsals started),” said Caleb Johnson who plays Chad Danforth, co-captain of the basketball team. The students with the main roles are hoping next year’s graduating class will put on the second ver-sion, if it’s available.

With the help of parent volunteers the show went off without a hitch on June 24.

Launch Your SummertimeInvestment Strategy

Summer is here. And summertime activities can provide some valuable lessons for successful investing. For example, just as you plan your route

on a road trip, you’ll need to map out your investment strategy and chart your progress. In the summer, you apply sunscreen to avoid sunburns. But as an investor, you can get burned by putting too much money in one asset, which is why you should diversify amongst a range of investments. While diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. Finally, just as you need to stay hydrated on

hot summer days, you need sufficient liquidity in your investment portfolio. By maintaining enough cash and cash equivalents, you can avoid dipping into your longer-term investments to pay for short-term emergency needs. Enjoy the summer - and follow these tips for “summertime investing.”This is Sheetal A Pallana, your Edward Jones

Celebrating Aggie DAys

The Hamlet of Carseland held their annual Aggie Days this past weekend. The wonderful weather brought families together from all over the area. The parade was held on Saturday morning fol-lowed by a full day of events, such as; face painting, kids games, a petting zoo, show and shine and a tractor pull, among many others. The Ag grounds were full of friendly faces and eager participants. Wendi Tashlikowich Photos

Emergency personal were kept busy last week with two motor vehicle accidents in three days. On June 21 one man was sent to hospi-tal with minor injuries after an accident occurred at East Ridge Rd and Lakeside Blvd. Charges are still pending.

Only two days later, June 23, a Pontiac was hit by a semi at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 817. RCMP were called in at approximately 2:45 p.m. and crews were working for ap-

proximately two hours to ex-tract the driver and clean up. The passenger of the Pontiac was taken away by ambu-lance fairly quickly after they arrived on scene. The driver however, was pinned and the fire department had to work carefully to remove pieces of the vehicle, including the roof, in order to rescue the woman.

“What we did, is we took both doors off the driv-ers side because we had to get access to her feet which were tangled under the ped-al,” said Lt. Terry Satink with the Strathmore Fire Depart-

ment. Because her foot was trapped under the pedal, it was the only way emergency crews were able to get her out of the wreck.

The driver of the semi was

not injured, and both women from the car were treated for mild injuries. Police are in-vestigating the incident fur-ther and charges are pend-ing.

Revamped camp The Gleichen campground has been a bit of an eyesore for residents of the hamlet. Recently though, it went un-der a bit of a face-lift, with all of the sites being redone, new fire pits and a bathroom being built. One resident is amazed by how much the camp-ground is used and said there had been three or four different groups which used it before the summer sea-son was officially upon us.

Despite the front drivers side of the car being crushed, no one was severely injured when a semi and a little Pontiac car collided on June 23. emer-gency crews were on scene fairly quickly, and after bringing in cutters and spreaders to take a part the vehicle, the driver was extracted and taken to hospital.

DOG OFF LEASH AREA

The Town of Strathmore is investigating the installation of a Dog Off Leash Area for use by residents and their dogs. The goal of the off-leash area is to enable dog owners to have an area for their sociable dogs to be allowed off-leash to interact with other dogs, as well as to be in a controlled area. The current concept is a 2 acre area to provide dog owners with a small area for this social activity to occur.

The purpose of this Open House is to offer residents the opportunity to provide input into the design and location of the Off Leash Area. Residents are encouraged to attend and bring creative ideas for the Off Leash Area.

LAND USE BYLAW – RV PARKING The Town is looking for feedback from the public on possible amendments to the Land Use Bylaw, Section 61, Clause (4), Regulations for Parking Recreational, Commercial and Motor Vehicles. Staff will be providing a number of options, and will be seeking public opinion on the proposed amendments prior to bringing the Bylaw forward to Council for approval/refusal.

If you are affected by the current Bylaw, or have any suggestions/recommendations or opinions, please attend the Open House and provide us with your comments.

Debbie Wakelam, owner of Meadow-lark supportive living facility, always knew she thought outside of the box when it comes to caring for seniors. So one day while she was searching the Internet to see how other care homes worked, she came across the Eden al-ternative. Wakelam went to Saskatoon and took the Eden Alternative Associ-ate Training at Sherbrooke Commu-nity Centre.

“A lot of the information wasn’t new for what I’m already doing, but there are subtle changes that we are making. Things like empowering the resident to make more choices,” said Wakelam. “I always felt that I was different, and here was an idea that sort of resonated with me.”

The Eden alternative follows 10 principals. The main focus is to identi-fy and correct the three plagues which affect most seniors in care homes: loneliness, helplessness and boredom.

“When I came home from the con-ference, they wanted to know what I had learned. I told them I was doing it all wrong, and that from now on we’re

going to do things the way you want them to be done. They embraced it pretty quick,” said Wakelam. She cur-rently has three elderly ladies living with her, Margarite Godkin, Maggie Gregory and Helen Jensen, and the la-dies live upstairs in the house while Wakelam lives downstairs. By eden-izing the house, the ladies now have more of a say in what they want to do, and aren’t stuck to a structured day like they might have at the Lodge.

“There are lots of things you can’t do there, that you can do here, like coming out in your house coat for breakfast, or sleeping in until 8 a.m.,” said Jensen. The ladies chose to live with Debbie, instead of going to a more structured care home, because they felt they were treated like kids in other facilities.

“I still have some of my faculties left yet, and I like to think for myself,” said Godkin.

The changes which have come about have made the house feel more like a home for the ladies and less like a care centre. Wakelam is hoping the word will spread, and that other facilities in and around Strathmore will begin to adopt the idea.

My dog is terrified of thunderstorms, what can I do to help him?

Ask the Veterinarian!Q

A is it quite common for dogs to experience fear during thunderstorms.it is important to start out by finding the stage of the thunderstorm that is

causing the reaction (ie: thunder, lightning, wind). once this has been identified it is easier to find a proper treatment. a dog that is nervous with lightning may simply be placed in a covered kennel or in a room that has no windows. if the dog is un-able to settle regardless, then simple interactions of his favorite game can engage him enough to take his mind off of the storm. it is important that you act normal during the storm, as too much consoling can reinforce the dog’s fear behavior. Engaging him in play during this time is important, but is also time consuming. it may not work the first time, so you must be consistent. Each dog is different, but some dogs may also benefit from thunderstorm discs that play gently in the background on a normal, sunny day.For the best option for you and your pet, a visit to your veterinarian for thunder-storm behavior handouts, advice, and possibly even behavior modifiers may be necessary.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report

As your Member of Parliament, it is an honour and my pleasure, on behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada to wish everyone a Happy Canada Day! This year, from coast to coast to coast we are celebrating Canada’s 143rd birthday.

Every year on Canada Day com-munity celebrations showcase our national symbols, our traditions and the talent of our artists. This is the perfect day for citizens through-out the country to show their pride in being Canadian.

We have good reason to be proud and to express this pride loud and clear. We can be proud of the peace, freedom, and citizenship from which we benefit as Canadi-ans. On Canada Day, we celebrate our remarkable history and the bright outlook for our country’s fu-ture.

The year 2010 is definitely one in which Canada is shining bright-ly on the international stage. This year, we had the opportunity to show the entire world who we are when the eyes of the world turned to our country for the 2010 Olym-pic and Paralympic Winter Games. Thanks to our athletes’ excellence

in sport, the immense talent of our artists, and the hospitality of our volunteers, we impressed visitors and television viewers around the world with our culture and quality of life. The 2010 Olympic and Para-lympic Winter Games were truly Canada’s Games.

This summer, we welcomed the leaders of the world when we host-ed the G8 and G20 Summits. Also, right now Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh are visiting Canada. They began their tour in Halifax on June 28 and will be in Winnipeg and Toronto from July 3-6.

In addition to the presence of the Royal Couple, the Canada Day ac-tivities taking place in the National Capital Region and across the coun-try will mark the Canadian Naval Centennial. The theme of the Cen-tennial is “Bring the Navy to Cana-dians.” The events will honour the past, showcase the current Navy, and support the Navy of the future.

This year, in addition to celebrat-ing the 143rd anniversary of Con-federation, we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of Canada’s na-tional parks and the 400th anniver-sary of Cupids in Newfoundland, the first English settlement in our country.

The Government of Canada is also proud to support the Canadian

team representing Canada at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in In-dia this fall.

Canada is known around the world for our generosity and open-ness. We share the traditions, val-ues, and aspirations that unite us and shape our nation. Throughout the country, we have also built prosperous communities that are enriched by the hard work and con-tributions of our citizens who are ready to meet the challenges of our century.

We can now count on the prom-ise represented by the dynamism of young Canadians to safeguard our future. Canada Day is an opportu-nity to pay tribute to our country’s remarkable people, places, and events. Canada Day is a key part in building our historical memory and it strengthens Canadians’ identity, solidarity, and sense of belonging. On this memorable day, we join all Canadians who are taking part in picnics or barbecues and attend-ing parades, shows, or fireworks displays, and we wish everyone a happy Canada Day!

The next time you open your Strathmore Times, you will notice something different.

From the publication date to the different paper we use, there will be a significant change here at the Times.

Since our first issue, on Novem-ber 26, the Times has grown with the tremendous support of our very loyal advertisers and readers.

We are now looking to take the next step in our growth, while pro-viding a better product for Strath-more, Langdon and all of Wheat-land County.

In order to serve this community better, the Strathmore Times will become a Friday publication begin-

ning July 9. We are excited for this change, as it enables us to deliver more of the news that happens at the beginning of the week.

To accommodate this change, the advertising and deadline for submissions will be at noon on Tuesdays instead of Mondays. This gives our advertisers one extra day to prepare after a relaxing week-end.

Beginning with that July 9 issue, the Times will be printed on the lat-est newspaper technology in North America, where the ink is cured by UV light providing sharper images and brighter colours. And best of all, just like our paper now, none of the ink will be able to rub off on your fingers!

Showering just prior to tanning will clear the skin of any potential barriers that might hinder the tan. Applying a tanning lotion right after a shower will help the lotion absorb more readily into the skin and prepare it for the tan. The exception is with lotions that make your skin heat up and “tingle”—proximity to the tanning session time is a little more critical with those lotions. Ideally, you should wait a few hours after tanning to take a shower. The reason: Skin takes a while to process the light that it has received into a tan. Taking a shower right after a tan won’t eliminate the tan altogether, but it will minimize the total impact of that individual session.

The Relay for Life had 68 cancer survivors take part in the celebration ceremony. In those 68 was eight-year-old Morgan Chisan. Morgan was diagnosed with acute lympho-blastic leukemia, ALL, which is a type of blood cancer.

“Basically it takes all your good cells and replaces them with bad ones,” said Tammi Chisan, Morgan’s mother. ALL is most common in childhood, with a peak incidence between two to five years of age and an-other peak later in life.

“I got a cold and then Mor-gan got a cold and then the bruises came and she was re-ally pale, and that was at West

Edmonton Mall,” said Tammi. Morgan was pale, wasn’t walk-ing and had a nosebleed. Tam-mi called her doctor who told them to bring Morgan home right away.

“We were very fortunate we had the doctor we did, because a lot of kids are misdiagnosed for months, and from the time of symptoms to the time of diagnosis was less than two weeks.”

On April 13, 2006, Morgan was diagnosed with ALL, just a few weeks before her fourth birthday. She went through two years and eight months of treatments.

“She did really good,” said Tammi.

“I watched the cooking shows all the time, those were

my main shows other than Sponge Bob,” said Morgan. “I want to be a nurse or a chef.”

While in treatment Morgan couldn’t have flowers, but was given lots of toys and did crafts. One of her favourites is beadwork, making bracelets, necklaces and key chains.

“I’m going to sell some at the garage sale, that’s my hob-by,” said Morgan.

During the treatment years, Morgan also took piano les-sons and private swimming lessons.

‘The swimming was against the Alberta Children’s Hospi-tal’s better judgment but you had to sort of let her be nor-mal,” said Tammi.

She also remembers after just being diagnosed, she wanted to go home for her birthday.

“She had next to no white blood cells, couldn’t walk and she kept saying she wanted to go home for her birthday, so her doctor let her go and said if she gets a fever bring her back right away,” said Tammi.

“Wade had to open my pres-ents, I couldn’t even sit on the

couch,” said Morgan. Wade is her big brother, who is now 11-years-old. According to Tammi, Wade was angry be-cause he essentially lost his sister, and his parents.

She had to miss preschool but began kindergarten at Brentwood elementary school, where she is just finishing Grade two.

“We just asked the parents to call us when their kids were sick so we could make the de-cision to keep her home, we didn’t ask anyone else to keep their kids home. If more than three or four kids were sick we would keep her home,” said Tammi.

This was the first year Mor-gan was able to do the Relay for Life. She wanted to stay until midnight and just keep walking.

“It’s for a good cause,” said Morgan, trying to beg her mom to let her stay late.

The Chisan family plans to be a part of the Relay in years to come. Tammi has already re-cruited three people towards a team for next year.

As a part of a health sciences class, 18 students from the Uni-versity of Lethbridge went to Ma-lawi, Africa for 23 days. Students fundraised and managed to get a few scholarships, but the students covered most of the cost.

The program is run through the museum of Malawi and students went there to teach about HIV and malaria. This was only the second time people were sent out there, and though they were still in Africa, they went to different communities. Leandra Krywcun, a Langdon resident, is a third year nursing student and was one of the students who went on the trip.

“It was amazing, really eye opening, and just a different ex-perience, like nothing you could ever imagine. What you read and hear doesn’t really prepare you for it,” said Krywcun. “I think it’s out of sight, out of mind here and

people don’t think about how they (Africans) can’t afford to eat, and are still battling diseases that we beat years ago.”

Most of the houses there don’t have doors, they don’t have elec-tricity, or running water, bath-rooms are outhouses, they sleep on the floor, they cook over fire, they don’t have stoves, fridges or freezers. They grow a lot of food and then head to the market to sell it for items they can’t grow.

“Corn flour and water is their main dish, it looks like porridge and has no flavour but it’s filling,” said Krywcun. The group, which included two teachers, didn’t re-ally travel around by themselves because they caused too much of a stir, but Krywcun said everyone was friendly and grateful to have them there. HIV is one of the big-gest problems there, and malaria is another leading illness and cause of death.

“There’s a lot of misconcep-tion about how it spreads, so

we were trying to break some of those myths and give them a good understanding of how they can prevent it,” said Krywcun. The group mostly spoke to younger

kids, wanting to reach them and educate them before they become sexually active.

“The sense of family and sense of stress free life they live there is

really amazing, I think they have a lot to teach us as well. It was a bewildering experience to real-ize how fortunate we are and how much we take for granted.”

The project is a part of their science cirriculum and this year on June 23 a family picnic was in-corporated as part of it. Happy Birthday Brentwood

Brentwood elementary School held their annual remembrance ceremony and awards day on June 24. This year also marked the 30th birthday for the school and a few teachers were recognized as being a part of the school since its inception. Staff at the school picks one students artwork from every grade to be framed and put up around the school, and the work will be returned to them when they graduate high school. This year only four former students returned to claim their art.

This year the Heritage Day Run will be a little different than it was last year. This is the second year for the Foot-hill Advocacy in Motion, AIM, run or walk, and Chinook Credit Union has been a sup-porter of the group for the past two years. Chinook has a five-year agreement with AIM and Branch manager Bill Crawford said if things stay the same as they have been,

they will sign up as a sponsor in the future.

“It’s the right thing to do, its like oatmeal,” said Crawford. It’s a $35 entrance fee, but this year the fee also includes entry to the rodeo or chuck wagon events. All participants will also receive a souvenir for taking part in the run or walk. It starts at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 2 at the ro-deo grounds. For more infor-mation email Craig at [email protected] or to register go to www.faims.org

Please send questions to [email protected] to all questions will appear on the website on the Funeral FAQ Page.

Q: What are the different types of funeral service? There are three basic types of funeral service:traditional, memorial, and immediate disposition.Traditional services usually include embalming, viewing if the family wishes, body and casket present at the funeral service, stationary, vehicles, funeral staff, and equipment. Memorial services assume the body and casket are not present although an urn may be. The funeral service itself is conducted similarly to that of the traditional service. Immediate disposition usually has no funeral service. The deceased is either buried or cremated as soon as possible following the death. Although these are the three basic types of services, individual needs and requests can usually be incorpo-rated into the service to make it a truly personal experience.

The last week of school has been any-thing but dull at Trinity Lutheran Chris-tian Academy, TLCA. The long anticipated mural, which was designed by students, finally found its home at the entrance of the school. On June 22, students assem-bled in the gym to watch and take part in an air band contest. There were six judges, including Trina Nestibo and Jim Baxter. The air band contest was a part of the music program and was organized by teacher Kyle Green.

“I was so proud of the kids, they were great. Some of the shy kids really opened up and got out there,” said Green. This was the first year for the contest, and Green is not sure if they will put it on again next year. Music Centre Canada supplied most of the equipment and the prizes for the kids.

All year the school has been fundrais-ing, and promises were made to the stu-dents about what would happen if cer-tain amounts were raised. The students surpassed expectations, and all levels were met. Earlier in the day teacher Mon-ica Major dressed like principal Harold Warr after students raised $600. Students were also able to see Mrs. Sackett and

Warr get a pie in the face. Loud groans and ewws, could be heard filling the gym when Green stood up with Warr and ate raw fish as his part of the deal. Lastly, cheers erupted when both Major and Warr had to dye their hair. Money raised from this year’s fundraising will be go-ing into the general school council, after covering the costs of the mural, and Clay for Kids project.

This was not the end of the fun for the kids, though. On June 23 students from grades five to eight took part in a game of students against teachers soccer. The teachers won the game 3-0.

“We ran intramurals and this was their reward, for taking part in it during lunch. They had the choice to either play an-other school or us, and they picked us,” said Connie Harder, a part time teacher at the school.

All of the students were invited to watch the game and cheer for their fa-vourite team. On Friday June 25 students were treated to an Aboriginal presenta-tion put on by sisters Na’tehya and Mireya Curly Rider and their mother Nicole Yel-low Old Women. Na’tehya performed a fancy dance while Mireya stuck to a tra-ditional dance. The students also learned a bit about Blackfoot culture and were taught a few simple words in Blackfoot.

The mural is the first thing any visitor to TLCA will see when they step into the school.

mrs. Sackett and principal Harold Warr both got a pie in the face after students raised $750.

Greg, Jun, David and Logan won first place in the air band contest. The boys performed to the song Whis-pers in the Dark by Skillet. They put on such a show that the whole gym was rocking out with them.

monica major, teacher, and Harold Warr, principal, told students if the raised $2,000 they would dye their hair in front of the school. Thanks to an anonymous donation, students reached the goal.

Public NoticeResideNts & MeRchaNts of stRathMoRe aNd the couNty of WheatlaNd.The Alberta Government is taking steps to move the #1 Highway 4 miles south of town (see attached map).

The plan proposed at the June 21st Open House will probably not take effect for another 10 – 15 years. Similar steps were taken a few years ago in the communities of Brooks and Vegreville and the resulting impact on highway businesses was devastating.

a public meeting regarding the re-location of the #1 highway will be held in the town of strathmore council chambers July 7 at 7:30pm.

A group of local merchants are on the agenda that evening, to voice our concern and our opposition to this proposed move of the highway.

Our town depends on the numerous businesses and hundreds of jobs on the highway and downtown for our local economic wellbeing. We do not want a repeat of what happened in Brooks and Vegreville.

Now is the time to act to stop this re-location. We need your support at this meeting on July 7th.

To the Editor(An open letter to Mr. Clarke)In regards to the off leash dog

park, has there been an overwhelm-ing request for this expenditure by town council? A two acre chain link fence can’t be cheap? Is this a cen-trally located off leash area for all residents of Strathmore? Was parking for the users of the off leash area fac-tored into the project? The residents of Hillview, Strathhaven, Cambria and Westmount will have to drive to the off leash dog park. What will be the cost of the dog park? Has town planning designated future off leash dog parks for the new communities to be developed? Does this mean

that if you walk your dog off leash down the canal you will be ticketed? I believe that Strathmore dog owners would not feel that this cost is neces-sary. In the 14 years I have lived in town, I see responsible pets owners with their pets under control. Town council could find better uses for the money at this time and in the future re-visit the idea of off leash dog parks in all areas of Strathmore or one more centrally located. Perhaps the field in between Hi-Ho and Kinsman Park? It already has parking.

SincerelyNatasha Crocker

Off leash dog park causes debate

Letters to the editor

To the EditorThe Alberta Government is taking steps

to move the #1 Highway four miles south of Strathmore. The plan proposed at the open house meeting held on June 21 in Strath-more will not take effect for at least 10-15 years.

Strathmore is a vibrant community and much of our economic wellbeing is due to a few hundred local people employed by businesses on the #1 Highway. If we are to see as much future commercial develop-ment on the highway as we have in the past 10 years or so, we will need the highway to stay where it is because it is vital to the economical stability and well being of our community.

The Provincial Government has, in the past, removed main highways from com-

munities of Brooks and Vegreille and the resulting economic impact on those com-munities was devastating.

The three traffic lights we have on the highway as it passes through Strathmore are the problem according to the Provincial Government, as they would like to see no traffic lights on the #1 between Calgary and the Saskatchewan border.

The Provincial Government asserts that this plan will satisfy their desire to define the long term (100 year), road network to support transportation needs east of Cal-gary.

Rather than attempting to solve the per-ceived future problem of traffic flow in Strathmore with a better system of service roads and overpasses within the town and with input at presumably lower cost, the Provincial Government is proposing to buy about 40 miles of very expensive right of way between Cheadle & Gleichen on which to build this highway; an area through which no benefits will exist for the local economy and with no needed services for the traveler.

As a business owner on the highway, I am appalled at the Provincial Government’s blatant disregard for our local economy and the job losses that will result, not to men-tion falling property values both in town and in the county on or near the existing highway and the unnecessary destruction of good farm land.

The current government in Edmonton is constantly cutting back services in health and education and telling us that these cuts are necessary because of budget short falls and at the same time they are prepared to spend millions and millions unnecessarily on this grandiose plan of theirs to move the #1 highway because of three traffic lights in town!!! Talk about a complete waste of tax-payers dollars.

The Stampede Challenge AAA Hockey Tournament took place in Strathmore, Cal-gary and Airdrie last week-end. This was the 16th year for the four-day event, and teams came from all over to take part. The tournament was made up of nine male divisions and two female. Scouts have been known to line the stands looking for new and upcoming talent. This year Gold and Silver di-visions were added to help accommodate the top teams

and the developmental teams. Kelly Bruce was one of the

organizers for the challenge and said this year 85 teams registered to take part.

“This is actually the first year there hasn’t been a lot of American teams. A lot of the tournaments we’ve had in the past we’ve had up to 40 American teams,” said Bruce. This year boasted mainly western Canada teams, but there was a team that made it out from Quebec.

There’s always little oops’s here and there but we haven’t had any really bad issues,” said Bruce.

The Spurs beat Blizzard Madrid from Calgary when they faced off against them on June 26. The team, girls U16, won the game 3-1, and have two games left in the playoffs. They have now played the top

four teams in the Tier 5 league and have two games left before finals. The girls are currently sitting at one win and three losses in the playoffs. “We could have easily beaten them (the other three games) we’re just as good as them, it was just timing,” said coach Ken Oliphant. So far in the league the girls are sitting at five wins, six losses and one tie.

Victory for Spurs

The heat didn’t stop the Spurs from defeating Calgary on June 26. The team, girls U16, won the game with a final score of 3-1. It was a fairly close game during the first half, but the Spurs dominated the second half. Shannon LeClair Photo

The Quebec Razorbacks played against Foothills North at the Stam-pede Challenge June 27. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, but because it was a round robin game the game didn’t go into overtime.

Let the sunshine shine because summer is finally here! And what better way to escape the heat than a dip in the pool. Swimming is a great activity for chil-dren and adults of all ages! Not only is it one of the

most effective forms of exercise but it can also be re-laxing as it soothes the mind and body. Fun, quality time can be spent with friends and/or family as well.

The Strathmore Aquatic Centre is pleased to of-fer many public and family swim times throughout the summer months. Swimming lessons are also be-ing offered throughout July and August. Please visit

www.strathmore.ca for weekly pool schedules, the summer swimming lesson schedule and for facility rules and regulations.

The pool will be closed from August 30th to ap-proximately September 15th for annual maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We hope to see you here this summer!

Not quite there yet expressions the Dance Gallery held a fundraising BBQ at m&m meat Shop to raise money for the dancers who are heading to Kelowna on July 11. The studio held a purse party a few weeks ago and raised $200 from it. The BBQ boasted the usual favou-rites, and there was a raffle for anyone who wanted to buy in. The BBQ raised just under $700, and the money is going towards covering some of the costs for those competing in the Great Ca-nadian Dance Challenge Finals. There has been about $1,500 raised towards the trip and the BBQ was the last active fundraiser the group will be doing before leaving. They were hoping to have a chance to raise more, but are happy with what they have man-aged to bring in.

Wheatland School learns to inline Tom Dixon with Alien inline from Calgary was on hand at Wheat-land elementary last week to teach the students the basics of inline skating. Grades 1-6 students benefited from three lessons: teaching balance, how to fall and get up properly, and in the last class they play games. Wheatland has run this program for the past five years, while Alien supplies all the equipment and the instructor. Alien offers day camps, drop-in, and private lesson. The kids get a lot out of theses lessons and always look forward to there next year of lessons.

Standard Sports Day started off on Friday Night with some ball games and the opening of the beer tent. Local mu-sic artist Drew Gregory, who just recently released his first CD called “Hurricane”, had an Open Mike on Friday night at the beer tents.

Saturday morning bright an early was started off with a pancake breakfast at the Community Hall. The Parade started at 10 a.m. with various floats from the community and away. We saw everything from Bagpipers in their colorful tartans,

4H Sheep Club kids with their livestock, the Standard Playschool with a float on the building blocks of Education, and some old/restored vehicles from the area.

The ball diamonds were packed for the entire day including the bleachers full of fans and supporters of the variety of teams.

The children in the community were entertained by a Blow-Up jump house, a $250 money sand pit, and by the face painter Lucie Brouillard. Older kids in the community from Grades 1-9 who signed up for the Amazing Race in town, had to complete many tasks included bobbing for apples, decorating bags, an-

swer trivia questions, drink some inter-esting concoctions (i.e. baking soda with water, real lemon juice, and sugar water), blind folded and being lead with direc-tions from their partners. All in all the kids had a fabulous time and EVERYONE got some really great prizes sponsored by many of Standard’s local merchants and businesses. The Community held a Golf Ball Drop, the balls was purchased for $5/piece and you put your name on it. Once they collected all the balls, some of the members of Standard’s Fire De-partment dropped them from the top of the fire ladder in the middle of the soc-cer field. The ball closest to the two tar-

gets won. The first prize went to Corinne Drydale who won a Golf Package from Oxbow for 18 holes and a golf cart for the day and the second prize was won by Stephanie Larsen of $100. Triggers Laser Tag from Strathmore came out for kids and adults alike to try their amazing laser tag game in their portable domed tent. The day ended with a Roast Beef supper at the Community Hall where the Library held a Silent Auction as one of their fund-raisers for the year. The evening started at 9 p.m. with a Community Dance at the Hall, which lasted until the wee hours of Sunday morning. It was a great Sports Day in Standard.

Sports Day in Standard

Standard had perfect weather to host their Sports Day; families came out to take part in some of the events offered. There was even a parade for the kids and miniature horses. There was the money pit where $250 in coins was hidden throughout the day. Lucie Brouillard is the World Champion face painter and in three weeks, she will be defending her title.

The 12th annual Rob Rebeyka Memo-rial Fishing Derby had 70 participants come down and take part in a day of fishing. Rebeyka had been a member of the Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association and had been a member of the RCMP before he was killed in a motor vehicle accident.

“It’s in memory of him, and he was an avid fisherman, that’s why it’s a fishing

derby,” said Justin Carlson, a member of the conservation. The derby was open to anyone under the age of 16 and over 65 and it only cost $1 to register. Everyone who participated left with a prize and with the help of Sarcee Fisheries and other sponsors; the conservation was able to provide bait and poles to those who needed them. Garrett Yasyki won first for the biggest fish caught; Jordan Geartz won second. The youngest boy and girl fishing were Anthony David, and Keira Buffam.

Fish off

Friends Benjamin Budzey and Nick Wylie (front) have been participants in the fishing derby for the past seven years. Last year Budzey won the most caught prize and Wylie won the biggest fish caught. The boys have a favourite spot around the lake and will camp out to make sure no one else gets it.
