Your generous support in 2019 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2019: We shipped books by the millions (yet again): BFA continues as the world’s largest shipper of donated books to the African continent, shipping over 47 million books and serving every single African country in our 31- year history. This has garnered us an eighth consecutive top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, putting BFA in the top 4% of all U.S. charities for fiscal responsibility and transparency. In 2019 alone we shipped over 3.3 million books, and 155 computers and e-readers containing 440,000 digital books, carrying a total value of over $31 million. 29 countries were served this year. Thanks to supporters like you, more than $2.9 million in cash donations were raised in 2019 to ship these materials. We traveled in the right circles: A formal partnership was established with the African Union, and a BFA delegation attended the 2019 African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Her Excellency Arikana Chihombori-Quao, African Union Ambassador to the U.S., agreed to serve as Co-Chair of our Jack Mason Law & Democracy Initiative, a role previously held by the late former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan. The L&D Initiative hit a major milestone this year, delivering its 100th law library to Africa, thanks to key support from Thomson Reuters. Our annual Summit Society Reception was co-hosted by Ambassador Chihombori-Quao and Summit Society Chair His Excellency Edward Sawerengera, Ambassador of Malawi to the U.S. This event was held at the African Union Mission to the U.S. in Washington D.C., and featured a large contingent from the African diplomatic corps. In Minnesota, His Excellency Dr. Ngosa Simbyakula, Ambassador of Zambia to the U.S., delivered a keynote speech at our annual luncheon. BFA was also honored to receive the “Friend of the Community” award at the Annual African Awards Gala in Minneapolis. We connected with key partners: 2019 also saw BFA participate in a large-scale USAID-funded project in Ethiopia, and finalized a new project in Mozambique which resulted in our first ever “Books For Africa Publishing” initiative with the delivery of 300,000 custom- printed Portuguese-language children’s books to Mozambique. We also continued our partnership with the Ethiopian Knowledge and Technology Transfer Society to develop a librarian training program, helping to ensure that library patrons are being well-served and a culture of reading is being fostered. 2019 brought another major project with long-time BFA partner the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, which delivered twenty 40-foot containers of books to schools in Nigeria. We were delighted to host Sir Emeka at our Atlanta warehouse, where he was accompanied by the Nigerian Minister of Health Dr. Osagie Ehanire, to inspect this massive shipment prior to departure. This partnership has now delivered an incredible 107 40-foot containers of books and educational materials. BFA also laid the groundwork for a legislative initiative with the U.S. Congress to ship books to U.S. Embassies and Peace Corps Missions across Africa in partnership with the U.S. State Department and the African Union. We brought books from far and wide: BFA continues to work to put quality, relevant materials in the hands of African learners. To accomplish this, we have cast a wide net for the best materials available. In addition to the millions of books shipped out of our Atlanta warehouse, we also shipped books from Paris, Montreal, Barcelona, Annapolis, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Lexington, and New York City in collaboration with our partner organizations. Large quantities of books were supplied by our strategic partners Follett Education Services, Better World Books, Lerner Publishing, and Capstone Publishing, as well as a unique partnership with the Library of Congress. Under the new “Books For Africa Publishing” label, we printed a custom run of 44,000 Somali language children’s books. In another exciting first, we established our first book trust in Nigeria, which will increase our ability to serve recipients who do not have the capacity or are too remote to receive a full container of books. We listened to our African partners: For the fourth consecutive year, we surveyed our book recipients to assess impacts of our activities. As with previous surveys, we are pleased to learn that recipients overwhelmingly rate BFA books as high quality, and agree that the books will be very useful in promoting literacy in local communities. In 2019, we heard from 34 recipients in 15 different African countries. As one recipient, Kingsley Kanton from Ghana said, “The books are the single biggest initiative in the region in the area of education in the last 30 years and we value them greatly, and will put them to the best possible use.” In 2019 we engaged our partners on all levels in order to deliver millions of books. 2019 marks our 31st year of working towards our vision of getting children reading in every African country. This was the dream of Kofi Annan, who stated, “Literacy is quite simply the bridge from misery to hope.” We are honored to have the opportunity to help bridge this gap, and we appreciate your help in making this happen. With best wishes for a happy and productive 2020, Jote Taddese Patrick J. Dear Friends,

2019 has been another record-setting year here at Books For Africa! Your generous support in 2019 has allowed us to make great strides in fighting the African book famine. We are pleased to share with you some of what we achieved in 2019:

• We shipped books by the millions (yet again): BFA continues as the world ’s largest shipper of donated books to the African continent, shipping over 47 million books and serving every single African country in our 31-year history.

• We traveled in the right circles: A formal partnership was established with the African Union, and a BFA delegation attended the 2019 African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

• We connected with key partners: 2019 also saw BFA participate in a large-scale USAID-funded project in Ethiopia, and finalized a new project in Mozambique which resulted in our first ever “Books For Africa Publishing” initiative with the delivery of 300,000 custom-printed Portuguese-language children’s books to Mozambique.

• We brought books from far and wide: BFA continues to work to put quality, relevant materials in the hands of African learners.

• We listened to our African partners: For the fourth consecutive year, we surveyed our book recipients to assess impacts of our activities. As with previous surveys, we are pleased to learn that recipients overwhelmingly rate BFA books as high quality, and agree that the books will be very useful in promoting literacy in local communities. In 2019, we heard from 34 recipients in 15 different African countries. As one recipient, Kingsley Kanton from Ghana said, “The books are the single biggest initiative in the region in the area of education in the last 30 years and we value them greatly, and will put them to the best possible use.”

In 2019 we engaged our partners on all levels in order to deliver millions of books. With best wishes for a happy and productive 2020,

Jote Taddese Patrick J. Plonski, PhDPresident Executive Director
