Called by God Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the Lord to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of sycamores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to pon-der that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say “yes” to the call we hear once again through God’s living word.

Summer Prayer

Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun

and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all

around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I

have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season.

Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter

where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with

Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me

a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.

Monday, July 06, 2009 Fishing

Fishing with my nephew’s eight year old daughter teaches me how we pro-gress in prayer. Each year, since she first started fishing three years ago, she has mastered one skill after another. At first, all she would do was hold the pole while others watched to see when a fish would bite. After she learned to watch patiently for a bite, she began to learn how to prepare the pole, put on the sinkers and bait the hook. Putting worms on the hook took a bit longer, but now the only thing she still won’t do is take the newly caught fish off the hook. She will, however, throw the fish back in the water. Jesus tells us to keep fishing, even when we think we’ve exhausted all the possibilities. If we obey, we’ll catch something, and he expects us to follow up. We are to discipline ourselves as his disciples, learn the techniques, rec-ognize how we need help and take joy in doing what he tells us to do. There are schools of prayer as there are schools of fish. Fish aren’t easily caught, so one has to learn their habits and habitats; and that’s how Jesus fishes for us. We just have to give him a chance. Francis Cardinal George, OMI
