A special thank you to Demetri’s Restaurant in Deerfield for hosting monthly lunch outings for our Residents.

Welcome to the July issue of the Greek American Times. The weather in June was beautiful and allowed for a ton of fun in the sun! The Residents headed kept active with weekly walking trips to local attractions including a nearby pond and garden, the local McDonalds, and our neighborhood Walgreens. We look forward to continuing our walking trips throughout the warmer weather. We also headed on some outings including an outing to Culvers for some burgers and ice cream, an outing to Wal-Mart and outing to Lincolnshire AMC theatres, where we watched “The Fault In Our Stars;” a definite tear jerker. We welcomed many guests, including our monthly visitors– St. Haralambos, St.Demetrios of Elmhurst, and the Ladies of Ahladokampos. We also welcomed the philoptochos from St.John the Baptist and the philoptochos from Assumption. The Daughters of Penelope Hellas Chapter 9 also visited us and made a generation donation to our home as well as, hosting an ice cream social. Aside from all of our visitors we hosted some of our own fun including, a pizza party, a chocolate milkshake social, a Root Beer float social, several Waffle Wednesdays, and even an iced tea social to keep us nice and refreshed. We topped our month off with an outing to Demetri’s Restaurant in Deerfield for some delicious food and wonderful company. Thank you to the staff at Demetri’s for your continued love and support. In July, we have plenty to look forward to, starting off the month right with a 4th of July Social. We also look forward to an outing to Oberweis for some fresh custard, a sunny ride through downtown for some sightseeing, a trip over to Wings Resale followed by lunch at Cici’s Pizza, our monthly trip to the movies, as well as, our 2nd annual trip to Eli’s Cheesecake on national cheesecake day for some free cheesecake. Make sure to stop in and join in on some of the fun! -The Life Enrichment Department

A Note From Food Services It is summer time again so let’s review some grilling safety tips.

Marinate and thaw foods in the refrigerator not next to the grill. When preparing the grill (your own or a public grill) clean it first with hot soapy

water. Wash your hands prior to grilling and after handling raw meat. Have separate utensils, cutting boards, platters, etc. for uncooked meat and cooked meat. If

cooked meat touches anything that has touched uncooked meat cross contamination will occur and illness may result.

Have a food thermometer to check foods are cooked to the proper temperatures Steak: 145°F (Allow to rest for 3 minutes before carving or consuming) Hamburgers: 160°F Chicken: 165°F

Now that you have all basics down here is a recipe to try out. Basic All-Purpose Marinade Recipe By Debbi Beauvais, RDN, SNS (www.eatright.org) Ingredients ¼ cup soy sauce 3 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar 1½ teaspoons garlic powder 1½ teaspoons ground ginger ¾ cup vegetable oil 2 green onions, chopped 1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Directions In a large bowl, mix all ingredients. Our New Nurse Liaison…

Our New Admissions Director...

A Note From Memory Care... Hello everyone! June was an exciting month with many outings and fun times. The residents enjoyed going to Oberweiss for hot fudge sundaes, D’Agostino’s for some Italian food and Yofruito for frozen yogurt. John Boda and Gary of the 45’s provided live entertainment on our unit. Patio time was an ex-cellent addition to our calendar and we enjoyed many warm summer days with refreshments, card games and admiring our beautiful garden. In addition I would like to mention that I will be taking on the role as Social Services Director on the 3rd floor. I truly enjoyed working on the Memory Care Unit and cherish the time I spent getting to know you all and your loved ones. I will definitely miss the wonderful staff, residents and family members, but also look forward to my future in Social Work at the Greek-American. Have a great summer!
