any of you remember thewords from an old song, Andthemusic goes round and round and it comesouthere.Well,thatlineappliestoJoeyPetrilyak.Hebeganhanging
aroundtherepairshopofNeilFord,whenhewastwelveyearsold.Interestedandeagerto learnhowthisnewfangledmusicboxpro-ducedthegreatmusicoftheday,JoeybecameaconstantcompaniontoNeil. Neil taughthimever somuch about the jukeboxes. HespenteverydayofffromschoolwithNeil.TheKoreanWarwasrag-ingwhenJoeygraduated.Likesomanyotheryoungmeninhisclass,hejoinedtheUnitedStatesAirForceforafouryearhitch.Whenhereturnedhome,Neilofferedhimafulltimejob.Itwasanaturalprogression for Joey towant tomake thishis lifes vocation. OnethingledtoanotherandafewyearsafterNeilsdeath,Joeyopenedhisownjukeboxbusiness Youhaveheardtheoldsaying,theresalwaysroomforonemore.Hereishowthatapplies.Neilhadayoungerbrother,MikeFord,whohadasimilarbusiness.Mikehadayoungsidekickbythe
nameofBillSimone.Now,afterMikespassing,BilljoinedJoeyinthebusinessin1966.Today,thebusinessisknownas,TwinNoveltyCo.ofMcAdoo,PA.Ofcourse,nowtheycovermuchmorethanjukeboxes.ItsawonderfulstoryoftwoAmericanentrepreneurs. IstartedoutthinkingaboutjukeboxeswhileIwaswritingthearticleonDeakosRoyalPalacerestaurant.Thatledmetothink-ingaboutJoeyandthisarticle.Onethingleadstoanotherastheysay.WhenIinterviewedJoey,hetoldmesomuchaboutjukeboxesthatIwanttosharewithyou. ThefirstjukeboxthatJoeyremembersisonebyDayMill,Inc.ofChicago.Ithadabigboxcabinetandheldten78rpmrecordsforfivecentsaplay.Therewasacoinslotinthefrontforthenickels.Thepersonmadetheselectionfromthetitlestripsandpushedthebutton.Insidewasalargerevolvingdrumrunbyamotorwithaveryloudhummingsound.Thespeakerswereinsideinthefrontofthecabinet.Thechangerthenplayedyouronesong.Ithadatubetypeamplifierforthesound.>>

Rock-Ola Manufacturing CorporationmanufacturedjukeboxesintheU.S.A.underthenameoftheRock-OlaContrarytomyththenameRock-OlahasnothingtodowithRock-N-Roll,agenrewithwhichthe jukebox iscloselyassociated.IndeedRock-OlawasthelastnameofthecompanysfounderDavidRockola.DavidRockolagothisstartinthepennygumballbusinessbeforegettingintojukeboxesandothercoinoperatedmachines.Da-vidretiredfromactiveservicebutwasknowntovisitthefactoryfloorfromtimetotime.Hepassedawayinthe1990s.In1992,AntiqueApparatusboughtthecompanyandrelocatedthefactorytoCalifor-niafromitshomeinChicago.TodayRock-Olamakesbothclassicreproductions like TheBubbler and Gazellewhicharebasedon1940sWurlitzerdesignsinadditiontomakingbothCDjukeboxesandinternetdownloadjukeboxes. Seeburg, another big name in jukeboxes, brought out amodelwhichplayedtwenty-four78rpmrecords.Thatwasconsid-eredalotofmusicuntilCDs(CompactDiscs)camealong.Thesit-

Wurlitzerwasareallybignameinjukeboxes.Theirmodelswerealwayscoinoperatedandnevertookadollarbill.Theirmodel1100was the conversionmodel. Whatwereonce twenty-four78rpmrecords,becameforty-eight45rpmrecords.Theircabinetde-signwasastepaheadoftherest,inmyopinion.Theearlymodelsused a newmaterial, a plastic calledCatalin. Catalin is a brandnamethatinthe1940sbecameamoreuniversalnameforthepheno-licplasticsusedinjukeboxes,radios,jewelryandcookware.Catalinplasticcanbeopaque,translucent,solidcoloredorswirled.Lightsinthejukeboxcabinetmadeitveryattractive. Nowinourstory,wehavecomethroughthe1930sintotheearly1940s.TheFords,JoeyandBill,keptthejukeboxesfilledwiththelatestpopularrecordsandremovedthosewhichdidnotgetmanyplays. During thewar years, partswere impossible to get for thejukeboxes,sinceeverythingwentintoAmericaswareffort.JoeyandBillwereverybusyservicingthemachinesasbesttheycouldduringtheirhighschoolyearsofWWII.

ThejukeboxthatIrememberbestistheWurlitzerModel#1015,withthecolorful,warmglowinglighttubeswhichbubbledastheyheatedup.ItwasknownasTheBubbler.Itcameoutin1946afterWorldWarIIandbroughtthecompanygreatlyneededfinancialsuccess.Wurlitzersold56,000unitsinlessthantwoyears.TheBubblerwas ahugehit in theUnitedStates and it followedtheAmericanGIallovertheworld.PaulFuller,chiefdesignerwiththeWurlitzerCompanyfrom1935to1948,designedTheBubblerwithitsartdecostyle.Ithadeightbubbletubes,illuminatedcolorchanging pillars,much shiny chrome and a doomed top. Itwas ahappydesignandfitrightinwiththepositiveattitudeprevalentinpostwarAmerica.Withthenewtechnology,youcouldselectmorethanonerecordatatime.Theearlymodelsplayed78rpmrecords,butby1954,Wurlitzerconverteditto45rpmtokeeppacewiththepopularnewspeedrecords.TheseweretheGoldenAgeYearsoftheJukebox.EventhoughtheWurlitzerModel1015wasproducedfrom1946to1947,itwasthepopularityofthisjukeboxmodelthatkeptmanyofthemstillboppingalongrightintothe50s.Itsthislongev-ity, that is responsible for TheBubbler being associatedwith theromanticized1950ssock-hopera. TheWurlitzer 1015 has been such a legendarymodel ofjukeboxthatin1986tocelebrateits40thanniversary,Wurlitzerman-ufacturedthe1015inaspecialeditioncalled,OneMoreTime.ItstillhadtheclassicdesignoftheBubbler,butthecompanyequippeditwiththeabilitytoplayCDs.Now,hereiswheremyresearchtookafunnyturnandbroughtmerightbacktoHazleton.ImentionedtomyREBroker,LarryTedesco,thatIwaslookingforapictureofajukebox.Hesentmetohiscousin,andmyfriend,JumDelese.Jimhada largecollectionof45rpmrecordsandnothingonwhich toplaythem.Searchingtheinternet,hediscoveredthatWurlitzerstill,in2010,producestheReproductionWurlitzerjukebox,OneMoreTime,Model1015.Thishehadtohavetoplayhiscollection.Whatasurprisedtofindthisjukeboxsoclosetomyhome,toseethecolored
lights,thebubblesandtoheardagainthatwonderfulsound.Whatatreat! Wurlitzer also had a model

In1942,PackardPlaymorCo. cameoutwith a chromecountermodel that spun aroundwith twenty-four selections fromwhichtochoose.Itwasstillfivecentsasong.Thechromeselectionboxeswerealsoplacedineachbooth,whichmadeitverycozyforaguyandgaltopickouttheirfavoritesongstogether.Saturdaynightwas dance night atmany diners, bars and restaurants all over thecountry.Rememberthesong,JukeboxSaturdayNight?Moppinupsodapoprickeys,Toourheartsdelight,Dancintoswingerooquickies,JukeboxSaturdayNight..ThissongwasrecordedbytheGlennMillerOrchestraonJuly15,1942withMarionHuttonandtheModernaires.WordswerebyAlbertStillman,musicbyPaulMcGrane. TherewastheLittleLPAlbumjukeboxwhichplayedbothsidesforahalf-dollarortwoquarters,onesideforaquarter.Ithadfull stereo sound, with speakers in the jukebox, and also speakersplacedinthecenterandcornersoftherestaurantorbar.TouchTuneMusic Corporation brought out the electronic boardjukebox.Illcall itTouchTuneforshort. Thiswassortofanelec-tronicboard.Rememberwhenprintedcircuitscameout?Well,thisiswhatIlikenittoinmymind.Nolongerwerethereanyrecordsorcompactdiscs.Therewerenomechanicalparts.Thisunitmounted

TouchTune sold theoperatorthemachinestoinstallandservice.Theoperatorpaidsixorseventhousanddollarsperunit,plusthecostofthespeakers,whichTouchTunealsosuppliedtotheoperator.Nowwiththissystem,theoperatordidnothavetobuytherecords or compactdiscs ashedidon the earlymachines.Thatwasasavings. Iaskediftheyrememberedwheretheirjukeboxeswereinstalled.Someoftheircustomerswhohadjukeboxesand games in their establishments were: Bernie ByoreksKnottyPinesRestaurant onN.ChurchSt.,TheCornerCoffeeShopat12thandAlterSts.inHazleton,Mrs.Hel-enSantoresValleyHotelinDrums,TheBeaconDinerinHometown,TaylorsDiner inTamaqua, FedullosRes-taurant inHazleton,MikeMintsBar andRockwoodsBar inTresckow, the VFWs inMcAdoo and SummitHill,YMPA(YoungMensPolishAssociation)andmanymore.JoeyandBilldistributedandservicedjukeboxes,gamesandequipmentwithinafiftymileradius.Theywereoperators/distributorsforActiveAmusementCo. During these years, after working with thejukebox music business during the day, for fifteenyears, Joey ran theArcade atAngelaPark. Tuesdaynightsfoundhimrunningthedancingontheropedoff cementoutside thepavilion The jukeboxwasinside the pavilionwhile the coin boxwas on theoutside.5centsaplay.ThelocalbuscompanyranbusestoAngelaPark.TheyoungpeoplewhomaynothaveownedacarinthoseyearscamebythedrovestodanceandhavefunatAngelaPark.Youngandoldalikeen-joyed themusic, thedancing,apicnic,aridearoundtheparkonthetrain,aswim,the roller coaster, the bumper cars, thesmallercarsforthelittleonesandsomuchmore.HeremembersfondlyalltheBarlettaKids growing up at the park.Theywerethe owners children. Itwas a great time;andjukeboxmusicwasalargepartofitall. Theadventoftelevisionbeganthedemise of the jukebox era. Hi,mynameisHowardOginandIamapsychologistwhohasworkedintheHazletonareafor30years.Youmightthinkthatheartdiseaseislinked only with physical activities-a lack of ex-ercise,poordiet,smoking,andexcessivedrinking.Whiletheabovefactorsareveryimportanttoyourcardiachealth,yourthoughts,at-titudesandemotionsarealsoimportant.Theycannotonlyacceleratetheonsetofheartdisease,butalsogetinthewayoftakingpositivestepstoimproveyourhealth. Howyouhandlestressinfluenceshowyourcardiovascularsystemresponds.Studieshaveshownthatifstressmakesyouangryorirritable,youremorelikelytohaveheartdiseaseoraheartattack. Then theres depression, the persistent feeling of sadnessanddespairthatcanisolateyoufromtherestoftheworld.Initsse-verestform,clinicaldepression,cannotonlyincreasetheriskofheartdisease,but alsoworsen the condition.While20%of thepopula-tionexperiencesanepisodeofdepressioninourlifetimes,thefigureclimbsto50%amongpeoplewithheartdisease. Why doesskincarematteriflymphedemaisanabnormalaccumulationofpro-teinrichfluid?Shouldntgettingridoftheswellingbetheonlythingthatmatters? Called hyperhidrosis, this distressingconditionmayaffectthepalmsandsoles,aswellasunderarmareas.Profusesweatingresultsfromeventheleastamountofheat,orphysicalormentalactivity.Emo-tionalstressmayalsotriggerhyperhidrosis.Thehands,feet,andun-derarms produce a steady stream ofmoisture (sweating buckets)leadingtomarkedself-consciousnessinmosthyperhidrosissufferers.SurveydatasuggeststhatoveronemillionAmericansarenegativelyimpactedbyexcesssweating. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public healthproblemintheU.S.Itisaprogressive,usuallypermanentlossofkid-neyfunctionthataffectsmorethan26millionAmericans,accordingtotheNationalKidneyFoundation.Diabetesandhighbloodpres-surearethetoptwocausesofCKD,puttingpeoplewiththosecon-ditionsatahigherrisk.Ethnicminorities,includingAfrican,Asian,HispanicandNativeAmericansaswellasseniorsandpeoplewithafamilyhistoryofCKDarealsoatahigherriskthanthegeneralpopulationfordevelopingkidneydisease.
