myPMI‐H NEWS                                                                                                                                            JULY 2012  From the Editor

A Message from the PMI Houston Board   Dear PMI Houston members,

This July edition initiates our third 2012 quarter serving your needs and promoting project management in our community.  In reaching our mission and vision, on behalf of the PMI‐Houston Board of Directors, I would like to briefly summarize the key accomplishments we reached during this 2012 year and outline what you should expect in the following months.   Thanks to your support and of our sponsors, we were able to further develop mechanisms to help our members, practitioners, and students in the project management field.

We awarded three (3) scholarships to students pursuing degrees in a project management related field,

In partnership with Toastmasters, we launched a new scholarship program for unemployed members to fund most of the cost of joining one of two PMI‐H sponsored Toastmaster clubs,

We revamped our sponsorship program, which resulted in more organizations sponsoring our chapter. We are proud to announce that this year we registered two(2) platinum sponsors, two(2) gold sponsors, one(1) silver sponsor, and two(2) bronze sponsors,

We partnered with the Global PMI Educational Foundation to establish the Eric Jennet scholarship fund,

Our membership growth has continued steady. We currently have more than 3,600 members, keeping our chapter within the top 10 largest chapters in the world,

Our annual 2012 PMI‐H conference held last month was a great success. We had by far more satisfied attendees, including participants, speakers, and sponsors, than in the past few years, who shared their positive feedback about several aspects of the conference,

We partnered with the PMI Clear Lake chapter to offer the VII Seminar at Sea to PMIH and PMICL members,

We created a new BoD position to be solely focused on Outreach Development and Promotion,

We participated in the PMI Region 6 Leadership conference to network with peer chapters, learn and share best practices on how to manage a local PMI chapter.

As we move to our third 2012 quarter, we will continue working on several key initiatives underway, such as:

Participate in several Global PMI events to further identify opportunities for our chapter,

Revamp our membership value proposition to increase our membership growth rate by 5%,

Continue offering high quality speakers in our dinner events and monthly venues, and training programs that you can benefit from.

Again, thank you for your support. We look forward to continue providing value to you.  Rita Barrantes, MBA, PMP 2012 PMI‐Houston Vice President of Communications

PMI Houston and Toastmasters launch a Scholarship Program

It isn’t what you know that enables you to lead. Leaders can tell a story and inspire people to follow their vision. They listen and acquire feedback. They guide others to achieve their goals, supporting and encouraging them along the way. They don’t just accomplish, they communicate. Maybe you are just starting your career and are working on finding your leadership voice. Maybe you are midway into your career and you realize the key to success and advancement are honing your leadership and communications skills. Maybe you are just a dad who is coaching his son’s Little League team and you know they need an inspiring leader to help them succeed. As a member of Toastmasters you will learn these skills. You will learn how to communicate your vision. You will learn how to lead, support, and develop others so that the goals can be successfully accomplished. You will learn how to listen, provide positive reinforcing feedback — and to accept feedback. I want to thank all of you that attended out sessions at the PMI Conference. I could see the interest in your eyes and we had insightful discussions with some of you on how Toastmasters can help with your professional development. Some of you are victims of all of the layoffs that have occurred lately and find you need a little help getting back into the workforce and / or improve your skill set. PMI Houston has funded a scholarship program for unemployed members who want to join one of the two sponsored Project Management Toastmasters clubs at a considerable discount. We are also pleased to announce that Professional Development Units (PDUs) are now awarded for your participation as a member of PMI Houston Chapter sponsored Toastmasters Houston Galleria (1294652) and North Houston (1314186) Project Management Toastmasters clubs. We at North Houston Project Management Toastmasters (NHPMT) and Houston Galleria Project Management Toastmasters (HGPMT) are here and eager to help you train and improve your communication and leadership skills. For North Houston area: NHPMT - http://1314186.toastmastersclubs.org/ Rashid Kapadia - ([email protected]) – President NHPMT For Galleria or West Houston area: HGPMT - www.hgpmt.org Allen Ashe – ([email protected]) – President HGPMT Meeting Time: 6:15 pm, 1st and 3rd Wednesday

myPMI-H NEWS JULY 2012

There are many training organizations out there that offer project management courses, however the majority of these have not been independently assessed against global standards for both project management and continuing education and training by PMI. Only PMI Chapters and PMI Approved vendors offer courses designated as a PMI R.E.P. This indicates that the organization has met PMI's rigorous quality standards and can deliver world-class, effective project management training and education. Project Management Institute's Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s) are organizations approved by PMI to offer project management training, and are authorized to offer direct PMI Approved PDU’s. Benefits of Training with a R.E.P. include:

• Demonstrated alignment with PMI, the world's leading, standard-setting project management association, • Pre-approved by PMI to offer PDUs. Credential holder PDU claims are automatically expedited for processing, • Qualifications are verified before acceptance and every three years thereafter through PMI's quality review process, • Every project management course registered with PMI must be reviewed by an appropriate and valid PMI credential • holder, • Project Management Professional (PMP) credential prep courses must be taught by valid PMP credential holders, • Verified focus of courses on learning outcomes, and • Instructors must be current in learning methods and must continuously enhance their skills.

A list of our courses is available at http://www.pmihouston.org/content.php?page=Professional_Development. If there is a class or topic that you are interested on, please contact our VP of Professional Development, Anna Davydan, at [email protected] and based on demand we will be glad to include it in our list of courses.
