The South Side

Report from the Shipping Terminal

Pacific Whiting fishing continues and the near shore Whiting fishery is open. Some boats have been in for gear changes or net repairs. F/V Raven’s new wheel house is done and their gear has been loaded. Some of the Newport fleet are still involved in survey work. Most of the material on the east lot has been moved or disposed of. Les Schwab has been assisting in the removal of the giant tires from the lot, and some regular sized tires as well. The majority of the fishing gear is arranged in rows from east to west.

Foulweather Trawl has kept the net repair area busy with repairs to shrimp nets, mid-water nets, and cod ends. ILWU Local 53 loaded a 20-foot container for Rogue Ales in June. The shipment went to Rogue’s overseas market.

The North Side A two-month inspection on the new ramp and float at Port Dock 5 found both to be in good shape. The north side operations crew has been dealing with piling. One old piling fell over on Dock 7-F and crew had to remove a fender pile at the hoist dock. Dock 7 X 2 got hung up on a piling and thirty feet of dock was under water. The Port’s tug was used to free the dock. An interpretive program is being developed to educate visitors who come to see the sea lions at Port Dock 1. The program will include training volunteer docents and interpreters on the natural history of the working waterfront. They will also assist with safety concerns between commercial workers and visitors using the dock. Newport resident Chris Burns and Mark Farley and Kaety Hildenbrand from OSU Sea Grant are working on developing the program. The bayfront merchants have created a Newport Sea Lion Docks Foundation to raise money for ongoing repairs and maintenance of the sea lion docks.

Thanks to TCB Security Services for their hard work over the Fourth of July holiday, making the 3rd and 4th of July safe and enjoyable for all. Port Security: 541-574-2828/Security Tip Line: 541-574-4009

Juaquin Rutherford and Kevin Corwin, north side operations, built and installed a ramp and deck at the new temporary Port Administration Office at Port Dock 7.

Pat Albaugh has joined the Port of Newport as Director of Finance. Pat came to Newport from the Port of Cascade Locks. He replaces Patti Britton, who retired after seventeen years at the Port.

The South Side The RV Parks had been booked since January and were full for the Fourth of July holiday. The City of Newport launched the fireworks display from a barge anchored in Yaquina Bay and many said it was the “best show ever”. The new paint job on the marina office looks great and painting on the Rogue building should be done in a couple of days. The Rogue Brewery warehouse expansion is complete and the new building and loading bay are now in service. The South Beach maintenance crew continues to work on G-Dock, placed benches for the information kiosk at the north restroom, and are busy mowing and maintaining both parks. Free sand is still available from Mt. NOAA and local gardeners report that it grows very nice vegetables.
