National Surveyof 16000ChurchesNearly nine in ten churches across thecountry are in good condition. That was just one of the findings of aNational Fabric Survey of 16,000 CofEchurches which has recently been com-pleted. Funded by English Heritage andundertaken by the Cathedral and ChurchBuildings Division of the Archbishops’Council, the survey shows that almost90% of our churches are in fair or goodcondition.“This is a great testimony to the efforts ofour church communities and to the tech-

nical and funding support we receivefrom English HerNational Fabric Surveyof our 16,000 churcheshlf.org.uk/HowToApply/programmes/Pages/Grants_places_worship.aspxitage,the Heritage Lottery Fund and others,”says Janet Gough, the Director of theCathedral and Church Buildings Division.ChurchCare is now working with the dio-ceses, English Heritage, the HeritageLottery Fund and other partners to under-stand and make use of the significantdata which the survey has produced.“This analysis will assist us in helping the10% of church communities that arestruggling with the upkeep of their build-ing, and help to prevent more churchbuildings from slipping into this category,”says Janet.

All arewelcome – if you can do basic DIY please let us know in advance so that thechurchwardens can plan jobs in advance.

Working party is almost always on the 2nd Saturday of each month…NOTE the next one will be on 13 July at 9.30.

FIRST STEPS12/6/13

SUMMER IS COMING

Our naughty little sheep had hoped thatsummer was coming; a few days ago he’dseen some sunshine but he’s up to leadenskies this morning with the threat of rain so he’sfeeling a bit disappointed. He hasn’t seen hisFirst Steps friends for ages so he’s really look-ing forward to seeing everyone later. He had alovely holiday but he did miss them! Soon heand I and his friends are on our way up tochurch. It’s very breezy but we’re hoping thatthe rain will stay away.

Into church we go and our naughty littlesheep’s friends scoot off to hide. They’re soexcited about being back and hoping to foolthose sneaky children. Julie has come in tohelp and as soon as we’re ready we open thedoors. Fingers crossed! Today visitors fromHoly Family are joining us to see what fun wehave and Mums, Grannies and children beginto arrive, too. Oops, that sneaky Elijah hasfound some of our hiding animals already, sohe and Elsie go and hide them again. Thosepoor creatures won’t know what on earth isgoing on!

At last with jingle bells ready and ourcandles lit, our service begins. Thinking oflovely sunshiny summer days we sing, “CreepyCrawly Caterpillar” Surely a caterpillar turninginto a butterfly must well and truly be a miracle, mustn’t it? In our beautiful world be are sur-rounded by miracles, that we so easily take forgranted, even the miracle that is life itself! Wethank God for caterpillars and butterflies andfor the beauty of the world around us.

Everybody stands up to do the actionsfor “My God is so big” and “Jesus’ love is very

wonderful” by which time our naughty littlesheep’s friends have been found. I think thatthey’re relieved to be back together and I cansee that they’re looking rather warily at Elijah! Our naughty little sheep didn’t want to hide;he’s just been standing very quietly on ouraltar, trying to keep a low profile.

We light some special candles today, happy candles for birthdays and a weddinganniversary, and sad candles for two sick peo-ple who are very precious to us. We know thatGod in Jesus Christ is with us always, to sharein the joy of our happy times and to comfort uswhen times are sad and difficult. The brightlights of the candles remind us of His undyinglove for each of us.

When we’ve quietly said our prayersand our candles havebeen blown out we gointo the hall for a cuppa,a small munch and achat. Our naughty littlesheep’s friends go intothe hall to watch thechildren play, but ournaughty little sheepdecides to stay quietlyin the church. Hewants to think aboutall the things that wehave talked about, sung about and prayedfor in our little service. But he is looking forwardto seeing everyone againon the 10th July for our nextFirst Steps service. He tellsme that he has definitelyordered sunshine nexttime! So we shall see!

God BlessRosemary Austin

Through the kitchen doorAlways nicer with fresh fruit and you don’t have to follow the recipe itstill works well if you have to add an alternative

SUMMER PUDDINGIngredients

● 300g strawberries● 250g blackberries● 100g redcurrants● 500g raspberries● OR 1¼kg/2lb 12oz mixed berries and currants of your choice● 175g golden caster sugar

7 slices day-old white bread, from a square, medium-cut loafMethod1 Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper – keepstrawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heatuntil sugar dissolves – stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in thefruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. Thefruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieveover a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice.2 Prepare the bread: Line the 1.25-litre basin with cling film as this will helpyou to turn out the pudding. overlap two pieces in the middle of the bowl as it’seasier than trying to get one sheet to stick to all of the curves. Let the edgesoverhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread inhalf, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole.3 Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secsjust to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangu-lar pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit to-gether neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fitthe last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice andslot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and thereas you go.Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top – trim off overhang with scissors.Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plateon top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, openout cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. serve withleftover juice, any extra berries and cream, Crème Fraiche or Greek yoghurtIf you have a recipe to share e-mail it to [email protected] hand it to a church warden or the editor, Mike Cubitt

There is a long connection between ChristChurch and Saint George’s School; three of thelast four vicars have been Chair of Governors. As Rural Dean of Gravesend, Sue Brewer isone of our trustees; that is she appoints somegovernors and is responsible for our perform-ance. Keith Knight is a long standing governorwhile Jill Sampson is mother of our HeadTeacher Anne Southgate. We have just done very well in our latest Ofstedinspection. Putting it simply we are a goodschool with outstanding features. This is asgood an Ofsted as enjoyed by any local second-ary school. Some Quotes;-“This is a good school.”“Students make good progress because theyare well taught.”“The quality of teaching is good”.“Teaching has improved strongly in recent yearswith much good and some outstanding teachingobserved.”“The behaviour and safety of pupils are good.”“The school’s values, promoted through its as-semblies, tutorial programme and lessons, make a strong contribution to good learning andprogress. Equality of opportunity is promoted, discrimination is tackled quickly and the schoolis very effective in promoting students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.”“The leadership and management are outstand-ing.”“The head-teacher and leadership team havevery high expectations of staff and hold themrigorously to account.”

“The governing body know the school very welland is fully aware of its strengths and areas forimprovement. They offer comprehensive sup-port to the head-teacher, leaders and staff, demanding the very best of them.”That is a sample which a previous vicar, JoeKing chair of Governors, is happy to offer to hissuccessor, Sue Brewer, one of the school’strustees. You are very welcome to read thewhole report. Here we have a flourishing ChurchSchool which is serving its multi-cultural com-munity very well. Saint George’s was foundedin 1580 with the purpose of ‘increasing the lifechances of local boys’. In 2013, this is still ourpurpose – to increase the life chances of alllocal children, no matter who they are. Results at GCSE and A Level are very good, with students making more progress than inmost other schools. These excellent resultshave enabled the school to choose to form itsown academy trust. We use this status to workclosely with local church primary schools inGravesham and Dartford to mutual advantageand support.More information about the school can be foundon the school’s website:www.saintgeorgescofe.kent.sch.ukJoe King

On the 29 May the Semiquavers took atrip to London to sing at the Evelina Chil-dren’s Hospital which is based at St Tho-mas’.The Evelina Hospital opened in 2005,and became London's first new children'shospital for more than 100 years. It wasfunded by £10 million from thegovernment and £50 million from theGuy’s & St Thomas’ Charity. Everythingfrom the menus and furnishings to theactual design of the building was chosenby children, making this hospital trulyunique. The singers warmed up in the St Thomas’Central Hall, giving an impromptu

rendition of some of their songs to staffand visitors there. The children were thenwelcomed by staff at the Evelina andsang to parents, patients, their familiesand friends, who also joined in with somesinging and clapping. The twenty member choir who attended, sang their hearts out for the Evelina, singing songs including the BareNecessities and the Lion Sleeps Tonight, all in all around a thirty minute set in thebeautiful atrium surrounded by palmtrees and gingerbread men!One of our youngest members, Grace, said afterwards she thought that thechildren were “very lucky to have beenborn now and not in olden times”. PraiseGod for that. The choir then took a walk overWestminster Bridge to visit the Houses ofParliament, which was made possible byour local MP Adam Holloway. The

Now they want help to plan forthe longer term of the local NHS.GP Dr Bhaskar Bora, chairman of the clinicalcommissioning group,•said: “In January, before wetook over our £278 million health budget on 1 April,we held a meeting and asked for ideas and sug-gestions about what was needed in the area. Thepublic asked - and we listened.“It was an excellent event. We agreed to put pa-tients first, to engage better with the voluntary andcommunity sectors and to work towards joint ap-proaches. We will•update everyone•on what wehave been doing and explain what has been goingon.“It is now•time to repeat the exercise for next year

and beyond. It is a tough balancing act, ensuringeveryone gets a quality service in these economictimes. But we are determined to stamp out inequal-ities in the area and to make sure treatment isdelivered as locally as possible.“It needs a whole new way of looking at the healthservice, which is where the public comes in. As theNHS prepares to celebrate its 65th anniversarynext month this is the perfect opportunity for thepublic to give it the best birthday present it couldwish for by taking this opportunity to help developand secure its future.”The afternoon event is at Princes Park Stadium,Grassbanks, Dartford, DA1 1RT on Tuesday 16July• from 1pm to 4pm. One number forcommunity carehelps Gpsand patients

A SINGLE phone number is being introduced forGPs and patients to call when they need commu-nity healthcare like district nurses.Dr Bhaskar Bora, chairman of NHS Dartford,Gravesham and Swanley Clinical CommissioningGroup, said: “A single point of contact will make iteasier for patients to get the right type of help. There has been a confusing collection of numbersin the past.”The introduction of the new number wasdiscussed••at the clinical commissioning group’sgoverning body meeting in public at the Bat andBall cricket ground, Gravesend, on Tuesday (21May) and again at a forum of the area's GPs onTuesday (4 June). The number has been given toGP practices• by• Kent Community• Health NHSTrust. It is planned to be made available for staff inhospital accident and emergency units, too.Meanwhile, the new health commissioners whocontrol a budget of £278 million, are continuing towork with the public to plan healthcare. RosemaryBolton, the commissioning group’s independentmember for patient and public involvement, ex-plained at the•governing body meeting•how thegroup is encouraging public feedback by workingwith patient participation groups based in GP sur-geries. She said: “It is important patients get moreinvolved so we know what is needed rather than usjust telling them what is going on.”There will be a meeting for voluntary groups tohelp come up with ideas for the area’s healthservices at a•“commissioning intentions” event onTuesday 16 July. She also thanked local media for keeping thepublic informed about campaigns, such as theneed for teenagers to be vaccinated•against mea-

sles and the battle to get earlier diagnosis of long-term conditions such as dementia and diabetes.Chief Nurse Geoff Wheat reported on the reviewby Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director of NHSEngland, which is due to report shortly followingvisits to Medway Maritime Hospital. The reviewwas announced in response to the Francis Reportinto failures at Mid-StaffordshireHospital.•Medway, which takes some patients fromDartford, Gravesham and Swanley, is one of 14hospitals in England to have their mortality ratesinvestigated.Mr Wheat reported that South East Coast Ambu-lance Service (SECAmb) had recruited more callcentre staff as part of a 10-week “rectification plan”for the recently-launched NHS 111 free phoneadvice service. The governing body also approved an agreementto work together with NHS Swale Clinical Commis-sioning Group because it shares the cost of someof the managers and the two areas have similarhealth issues. The GPs believe the combinedapproach will help after the proposed merger ofDarent Valley and Medway Maritime hospitals.GP Dr David Woodhead said: “This is a really goodway of sharing our resources and underpins whatwe are trying to do. Some of the work we areattempting is so big it would be foolish not to worktogether. It would be letting our patients down.”The next meeting in public of NHS Dartford,Gravesham and Swanley Clinical CommissioningGroup is on Tuesday 30 July in the Council Cham-ber, Gravesham Civic Centre, Windmill Street,Gravesend DA12 1AU from 1 to 4pm. The agendaand papers will be available to view five daysbefore on thewebsite www.dartfordgraveshamswanleyccg.nhs.ukor at council offices. The public can ask ques-tions at the start and end of the meeting.
