When Enchantress Boutique opened back in 1999, what was your vision for the boutique and has it changed since then? If yes, how?Back in 1999 in Maui our vision was to create a bou-tique with an extraordinary collection of hip clothing and accessories that we loved because nobody was re-ally doing that in Maui at that time. We were one of the first hippy chic stores on the island.

And now, 14 years later vision is the same.... We still rock fashion, but now we are even more exclusive and specialized. Our boutique is more of an experience and a shopping destination, definitely not your average boutique. This is reflected in our award winning and show stopping window displays. Some fashionistas have called it a shopping wonderland for women!

What is your absolute favorite thing about owning a fashion boutique? Our favorite thing is the joy of creating. We have created a fashion sanctuary for women. We still get very excited creating a windows, dressing a mannequins. We love playing dress up and helping women to feel beautiful and confident when they walk out our door.... Fashion is our passion. This is reflected in our award winning and show stopping window displays.

We noticed that several celebs have visited your shop! How did you manage to attract them and do you have a favorite?

q&awithBootzie

Celebrities just found us... They are always looking for the outrageous. At the end of the day they are just people who like us, are very passionate about fashion. They always express how much they love our artistic vision and the over the top collection that is always changing.

What do you think sets Enchantress Boutique apart from ALL the rest? What sets us apart is our ability to innovate and run amok in a world where there really are no rules. We are truly fearless in our approach... Not trying to copy anyone we are truly unique. We have no formal train-ing, we let our imaginations guide us in every aspect. The experience inside our store isn’t like any store we know of. We offer a vast range of items includ-ing denim and tee’s, lingerie, resort cover-ups, swim, bridal gowns, prom, accessories, gifts and decor.

What are your current hottest sellers? whats hot right now in fashion is bold pieces with meaning. Printed statements that cause you to re-examine your belief systems, what is going on in the world, and how you can make a difference. The hottest seller for quite a long time has been a leather wrap bracelet with positive affirmations. We were the first ones on Maui to have it. These bracelets touch a chord across all demographics.. and age groups.

andFifiOwners of Enchantress Boutique in

Maui, Britta Alexandra (Bootzie-left) and Judith Carroll (Fifi-right) have created a safehaven for women. They have earned

the likes of Paris Hilton, Steven Tyler and many more celebs. We asked them a few questions about their journey of

boutique ownership and what sets their boutique apart from all the rest.

Sean Patrick Harrington launched his Previse (pre-vize) SkinCare line in 2010 to a small group of influential skin care professionals. The next year, he focused on expanding the product range and further customized his hand-crafted recipes. Last year, he launched Previse to the general market. Sean serves as the company’s founder and CEO.

Q. Welcome, Sean. Please tell us about Previse SkinCare. A. Previse SkinCare apothecary products are designed by nature and customized by skin type. They are retailed exclusively through our company website, dermatolo-gists and licensed estheticians. Because one size does not fit all, our exclusive intake diagnostic tool tailors each regimen to improve each client’s skin health. Healthy skin is hydrated, thicker and more elastic, better able to combat the environment, has fewer lines and wrinkles, and more even tone. Healthy skin is fit skin.

Previse SkinCare restricts the use of petroleum by-products, including artificial fragrances. The petroleum extraction process is extremely hostile to our environ-ment. Instead, we use chondrus chrispus, a super hydrat-ing marine algae that helps trap moisture to hydrate the skin. Additionally our ZeroSilconeTM recipes are free of harsh preservatives, skin clogging silicones, petroleum, synthetic oils, dyes and fragrances. Instead, our recipes blend protein derived from non-GMO soya bean, with potent antioxidants like green tea extract, honey and resveratrol. Protein helps improve the skin’s thickness and elasticity over time.

Q. How did you get to where you are today? A. I started with a public school education, followed by college, graduate school, a lifetime of creating art and years of persistent attention to detail. After 15 years of working at large, multinationals, I rallied a team of passionate individuals to launch Previse. We are bota-nists, scientists and physicians, who are moms, dads and cosmetologists. We celebrate many things in common, including our conviction to preserve ourselves and our biosphere.

Q. What is Skin Fitness for Professionals? A. Previse asks professionals, “Are your patients unknow-ingly making their skin sick.” In their quest for the latest anti-aging, skin perfecting products, many people are unknowingly damaging their skin. The use of aggressive agents damage the dermis. Previse utilizes radish root and wasabi extracts to maintain quality, daisy flower extract to improve tone and hyaluronic acid to improve hydration. The Previse system teaches the skin care pro-fessional how to evaluate 11 key characteristics, includ-ing baseline melanin, geographic location and skin care history when determining the optimal regimen to recom-mend. The result isolates the ideal three-step regimen—Purify (SRP $34.00), Nutrify (SRP $48.00) and Defend (SRP $48.00)—to help clients achieve skin fitness.

As our medical advisor and frequent dermatological guest expert on the “Dr. Oz show,” Ellen Marmur, MD, stresses, “Our body is equipped with the most amazing, sophisticated mechanisms of rejuvenation and repair. The goal is to sup-port those wonderful systems to allow them to optimize our skin’s health. Protection and prevention might be considered the least glamorous approach, but actively managed, this is the most valuable investment you can make in your skin’s health.”

Previse is free of skin irritants, environmental pollutants, para-bens, phthalates, petroleum, silicone and PEGs. We take the fitness and health of the skin seriously, without compromising the environment.

Q. What is your operating philosophy and how do you approach each day?A. We begin each day reminding ourselves that our mission is to exceed client skin care needs. We end the day asking if we accomplished our goal, and whether we are meeting our vision to have Previse within the arm reach of every person.

Q. What are some of your key ingredients and technologies?A. Previse SkinCare was inspired by the passion for cruelty-free products. Our conviction is “better for you, better for your environment.” In addition to our ZeroSilcone recipes, which I already described, our recipes borrow the best of na-ture to improve skin fitness, including daisy extract to improve tone and diminish hyper pigmentation, and hyaluronic acid to help improve hydration.

Our conviction extends to every aspect of our company, including zero tolerance for ingredients that are hostile to our person, our home, community and our bio-sphere. The inspi-ration remains very big and often challenging. For instance, it is much easier and less expensive to use petroleum in lotions and creams. Petroleum can help provide an aesthetically appealing feel to a product and good foundation for other ingredients. However the petroleum extraction process is ex-tremely hostile to our environment. Essentially, Previse recipes help inhibit cell death, while concurrently helping to strength-en cells, which leads to fitter and healthier looking skin.

Q. In a crowded marketplace, what is Previse’s point-of-difference?A. Distributors will find the Previse brand an ideal comple-ment for their salon partners diversified in hair and skin care, who lead in the areas of enduring health and holistic well-ness.

Approximately 82% of people in the United States live in an urban or semi-urban area. Climate change, product trans-parency and environmental stewardship messages tend to penetrate deeply in these markets. Distributors want to add Previse to their portfolio of products if they compete in these markets, and want to contribute to their accounts growth.

onia Hensler exists in total awe and ap-preciation of the carnival of life and love; the wealth of riches and beauty present in every day and so seemingly obvious to the open observer. She worships at the opulent altar of fashion, theatre, food and film; fun and frivolity are her sen-sory stimulation. Aspiring to these plea-sures, she believes, is not an egoistical whim but an acceptance of human de-sires.S

Sonia supposes it is this openness and acceptance that informs her work – striving for a direct transition from personality to page. Highly stylized and occasionally uncompromising, she wishes her work to be playful, yet provocative and hopefully it will lift your mood, or at least the corners of your mouth! Her aims for a stupendous future include further exploration of the union between more traditional graphical techniques and the potential offered by modern computer programmes. This colourful collaboration promises some wonderful avenues of adventure.Sonia Hensler is educated at Academy of Fine Arts (MA in Fine Art, 2007). New Day. New Look. Like most of us, you spend a lot on clothes, but still have nothing to wear. Your things just don’t work right together. MIKA offers a full head-to-toe curated look by top de-signers.We work exclusively with the best brands and stylists to create the most updated fashion- forward looks. With MIKA you can indulge in a dazzling new ensemble every day.

The Long story: Presented by TechCrunch Link: Here Elena Fesenko grew up in the fash-ion industry. Her mother worked as a buyer for Bloomingdale’s, and she herself spent time both as a fashion design student and model. Now Fe-senko has translated her experience and pas-sion for fashion into MIKA, a new startup which showcases complete outfits featuringa mix of high-end and contemporary apparel and acces-sories. Shoppers can buy these looks in whole or in part, sometimes even getting exclusive access to items which aren’t yet available in stores, but are rather pulled from designers’ showrooms di-rectly. “Putting together outfits for work or for differentoccasions is hard. Usually, no woman dresses head-to-toe in one designer,” explains Ukraine-born Fesenko, who runs MIKA alongside co-founder (and husband) Sani Sanilevich. “So I

had this idea to put together all the designers in one look, and to create a website,” she says. On MIKA, which officially launched on May 14th with looks that will be swapped out every 24 hours plus support for international shipping, shoppers will be presented with what Fesenko describes as a “visually stunning shopping ex-perience.” What that means is that instead of static images, a short, looping almost “GIF-like” video plays which shows a model in action, wearing the look in question. Behind-the-scenes videos from the shoot, and interviews with the stylist – often a guest stylist from the industry, like a well-known fashion blogger for example – will also accompany the various looks. To date, the company has involvement from super mod-el Bar Rafaeli (who has equity in the company), and has worked with photographers Adrian Nina and Fadil Barisha, and bloggers from Fash-ion Indie and Above the Law. Thirty more blog-gers are lined up to work on the new site go-ing live later this month, as well as some celebs and models which MIKA is not yet permitted to name.Though it’s still in a beta testing period of sorts, thanks to Fesenko’s connections, MIKA has already established relationships with 120 designers, including Cynthia Rowley, Anna Sui,

Page 59: July 2013 Skin Is In

Vince, Norma Kamali, Elie Tahari, Yigal Azrouel, DL1961, Kara Ross, Sigerson Morrison, and Tra-cy Reese, who have agreed to offer their items for use on the site. Fesenko explains the designers were happy to work with MIKA, because so much online fashion is offered at discounts, as with ex-cess inventory. “We offer the items at full price,” she says, “and we shoot them in amazing editorial with the best models, and the top photographers in the industry.” Because of this setup, some of the designers have even offered some of their items to MIKA which will have them for sale before they arrive in stores. In the last month, the company sold over 40 complete looks and over 150 sin-gle items, despite not having marketed the site – word got out through those in the industry who heard about what MIKA was up to. Some items even sold out. “We have a few thousand users, but we didn’t expect to have sales since we were focusing on different things, like acquiring design-ers and building our website,” says Fesenko. (The screenshots show the upcoming website, which is an update from the one that’s live today). MIKA sees a 60 percent margin on the items it sells, and offers free shipping or hand-delivery to NYC-based users. The company closed on $500,000 in seed funding in June 2012, which included in-

vestment from the founders, friends and fam-ily, Plug & Play (Saeed Amidi), Ronnie Stern and Allen Peters. In February, MIKA closed a Series A of $1.2 million from Hillsven Capital (Bobby Lent), and Plug & Play. The updated version of MIKA will launched on Tuesday, May 14th, but you can visit the current site to register and shop.

“So I had this idea to put

together all the designers in

one look, and to create a

website.”

N i k i F e i j e nI am not a professional photographer, or a writer. I have never studied photography nor have I taken any photography classes. I am a network engineer with a crazy hobby. The book you are holding in your hands right now, assuming that you are in fact holding this book in your hands, is the sole result of that unusual interest. For the past five years I’ve been visiting abandoned and decaying places all over Europe. Why would you do that?! I hear you say, well, why not? Haven’t you ever wondered what lies on the other side of the fence or beyond that ‘Do Not Enter sign’? There’s a whole world hidden from view, lost asylums, decaying hospitals, abandoned castles and long forgotten hotels.

It all started when I was a kid, there was this old deserted house nearby, a creepy old place which roused all my curiosity. I passed it a thousand times and one day my curios-ity gained the upper hand and I just had to see what was inside. I jumped off my bike and walked towards the derelict structure. It took a good deal of courage to push the backdoor, it squeaked as it slowly opened inward. A blue chair sat in the corner partly overgrown with weeds and foliage. On the floor next to the chair were the remains of a toy doll, it sat there staring at me with a large green eye, and an empty black hole where the other belonged. The doll had scared me, but at the same time I felt a rush of adrenaline flowing through my veins. I think that was my first urbex experience but then again it may be just a story made up in my twisted brain, who knows?

Definition of an Urban Explorer: “The examination of the normally unseen or off-limits parts

of urban areas or industrial facilities, such as visiting and photographing abandoned buildings, tunnels,

industry and castles.”

During a trip we were going to check out an abandoned church. Boy were we in for a surprise.

When peeking through the windows we looked at 9 ghosts sitting in the pews dressed in wrinkly white cloths.

Why on earth would they put those figures in the church? I never peeked underneath.

I wish I had.

We’ve all been there… You want to pick up some-thing to wear to a party this evening. You’re run-ning late, so you pop into your favorite store, pick up a dress and take it home without trying it on. Then you zip yourself into it only to find out that it’s way too big. Sizing is not consistent across the board. What is labeled as a 6 in one store could be an 8, a 4 or even a 2 in another. It’s a practice known as vanity sizing – labeling clothes with a smaller size to entice consumers to buy them. While this practice is completely up to each retail-er, it can make shopping a frustrating experience – especially for those of us who don’t like trying on clothes.

What’s the point? The idea behind vanity sizing is that people feel better about themselves when they fit into a smaller size. Therefore, by misleading customers into thinking that they are smaller, the store can sell more clothing. Tweaking sizes by a couple of inches isn’t really too deceptive. After all, weight can fluctuate on any given day. You can weigh 125 in the morning and 129 by bed time. Having a little breathing room in your jeans isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and trying to force your body into an article

Tips for beating vanity sizing and ensuring a good fit

of clothing that no longer fits isn’t only uncomfort-able, it actually makes you appear bigger than you really are. So if one brand lets you fit into a size 6 while accommodating the Freshmen 10, where’s the harm?

In recent years, however, the process has seemed to be getting out of hand. According to a 2010 blog post for Esquire magazine, author Abram Sauer compared seven pairs of size 36” jeans from differ-ent brands. After measuring the waistline, he found that none of them were true to size. All were bigger than 36”, and one brand added as much as 5”, at a total waist line of 41”. There has never been con-sistency in mass merchandised clothing, but with such a discrepancy, it can be very difficult to shop.

How do you deal with it?

more options in stores now, I don’t really understand why they need to change the sizes. I know what size I am. I don’t need a company to try and boost my self-esteem, which isn’t low to begin with.”

Some people are feeling the effects in another way. Tina, 26, is a thin person who is suddenly finding herself be-ing sized out of certain stores. “There are stores where I can’t find anything that fits me anymore. I’ve routinely been told that my size is a ‘specialty size,’ and that I need to order it. This is from stores I always shopped at six years ago.” High-end designers have catered to waif-like women for years, but in reality, most of them don’t fall into the tax bracket to buy couture on a regu-lar basis.

Bottom line With the right tools (soft tape measure, your measure-ments, your shape, online size charts, customer reviews, etc.), you can minimize the frustration brought on by stores’ attempts to appeal to your shallow side. A popu-lar trick of the fashion trade is to buy clothing that is a size too big and tailor it to your body, ensuring the most flattering fit. If you find yourself standing in front of a mirror with a party dress that looks like a potato sack, take it to a tailor. It may end up looking better anyway.

For the time being, it looks like we are all stuck with vanity sizing. So take it in stride and don’t put too much stock in the number on your jeans. If they fit, flat-ter and make you feel confident, who cares if they are labeled size 10 or size 12? You can throw on a pair of killer heels and work them just the same.

Twice designated one of the 25 Most Powerful Players in the fashion industry by the California Apparel News, Linda Arroz is a noted lifestyle writer, speaker and con-sultant, whose expertise encompasses the convergence of fashion, fitness, wellness and beauty with technology.

Shopping doesn’t have to be torture – even for those of us who hate trying on clothes (ahem – moi). Linda Arroz, former Hollywood stylist and co-author of “Affordable Couture,” offers several tips. “The best way to get a good fit in clothing, particularly when you’re shopping online, is to know your own measurements.” She also makes it a habit of carrying a soft tape measure when shop-ping. This ingenious idea will allow you to measure a garment, so you will know how it will fit without having to try it on.

Arroz also recommends doing some research on your favorite brands. “Many larger companies, like Land’s End, for example, offer customer reviews. In specialty stores or departments (particularly for plus size or petites) the sales associate may be able to let you know if an item ‘runs large or small.’ Department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdales offer private label collections that are branded, such as Style & Co and INC. These clothes tend to provide a truer fit, meaning that they are more connected to the size and shape of the average female body, vs. the super thin and smaller boned shapes of women who wear contemporary fashion.”

Of course fit is going to vary depending on gar-ments. Arroz points out that fabric and shape will cause things to fit differently. Stretchier items tend to have more give, so it’s okay to shop down. She also recommends finding clothing silhouettes that are more forgiving and therefore are more versa-tile. “The last few seasons, we’ve seen tops with drop shoulders, cold shoulders, bat wing and dol-man sleeves and draping. These types of tops may look slightly different on a smaller or larger body, but overall, they fit a wider range of sizes and body shapes.”

Word on the streetA lot of people of all shapes and sizes don’t appre-ciate this practice. Along with making it frustrating to shop, it can also take the fun out of milestones. Renee, 35, says, “I think it’s insulting to our intel-ligence, like we aren’t going to figure out that we didn’t magically become a size 4 overnight. I have worked hard working out and eating healthier, and I want to feel like I earned that size.”

Jackie, 40, agrees with the notion that companies are trying to deceive. “I’m a plus-size woman who loves fashion. While I think it’s great that there are

I swear I can’t make this stuff up; this is the type of magnetic attraction that cannot be taught, but luckily can now

be bought.

FASH IONAFFA IRMAGAZ INE . COM JUL2013

If you knew it all, would you be hiding under that floppy hat? International make-up artist Munemi Imai has tapped into the healing properties of the Prickly Pear cactus and the oils from the seeds that it produces. It’s no secret that more and more of us are turning our backs towards the overstocked shelves at the local grocery and leaning in to learn more about the organic healing properties already avail-able to us in nature. This dream serum reju-venates and heals deep to the core, long after the other beauty promises gave up. This is an unlikely assurance, from your new prickly friend.

The Shine Project was created by 26 year old, Ashley LeMieux, to motivate people around the world to go out of their comfort zones to make a change. After starting a blog myshineproject.com, Ashley realized just how large the effects of The Shine Project could really be. “Thousands of people across the world started reading my blog”, says Ashley. “I was featured on a few news stations and I realized that people are looking for sources of light and goodness, and that my words were being read by people who wanted encouragement and hope in their lives.”

At the start of her blog, Ashley was also working at an inner city high school in Phoenix, Arizona. She realized the need the kids had for mentors, funding, and just people who believed in them. She started to use her blog to raise awareness for the kids, and was able to give 10 college scholarships in the first 5 months with the help of her readers. She turned her efforts into a non-profit organization, The Shine Scholarship Project, whos mission is to change the lives of at risk American youth through service, education, and family involvement. Service projects are set up so the kids can realize the ability they have to give back to society, and college scholarships are awarded so they can further their education.

Ashley realized she wanted a bigger way to help the kids she has grown to love so much, and decided to start a for profit business in which she would use to employ the youth she was working with. She wanted to be able to teach them business skills so they would be prepared for real life experiences, and give them a way to keep earning an income as they paid their way through college. That’s when Threads by The Shine Project was born.

Wanting to jump on the bracelet craze, Ashley taught herself to make bracelets and decided to teach the kids to do the same. Threads by The Shine Project sells fashionable brace-lets and are now expanding to other products in 2013. De-scription of Threads by The Shine Project below:
