This July we will be promoting men’s healthwith a focus on prostate health. The prostate gland is part of the malereproductive system and can be found justbelow the bladder and in front of the rectum.Almost 50% of men in the 50+ age group maybegin to experience a weak, low volume urinestream due to an enlarged prostate. As thegland gets bigger, it may narrow or partiallyblock the urethra – the tube that carries urinefrom the bladder out of the body. This conditionis known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)and is thought to be part of the normal agingprocess in men, caused by changes inhormone balance and cell-growth factors. BPHis NOT cancer and while it is not usually lifethreatening, it can be a nuisance. And, insevere cases, if left untreated, it can lead tokidney failure, urinary tract infections, bladderstones and blood in the urine. Medicine canusually delay or halt the progression of BPH butoccasionally surgery is necessary.

Now, when it comes to prostate cancer, it’s adifferent story. Prostate cancer is the mostcommon type of cancer found in American menover 50. According to the Centers for DiseaseControl (CDC), in 2010, 209,292 men werediagnosed with prostate cancer and almost28,000 of them lost their lives to the disease.Age, family history and race are all risk factorsfor developing this cancer. Prostate cancers are typically slow growing andthere are several screening tests that can helpdetect the disease before it becomes lifethreatening. Current guidelines recommendthat men begin annual prostate screenings atthe age of 50 if they have no family history.Men with a family history should start thescreenings at age 45 or earlier as advised bytheir doctor. Please Join UH Geauga MedicalCenter during the month of July at all of theGeauga County Senior Centers for our monthlypresentations to learn more about prostatedisease and the treatment options available.
