CARNIVAL CORPORATION & PLC, the world’s

largest travel and leisure company, has just launched

a new brand called fathom™ and created a new

travel category it’s calling social impact travel. The

purpose of this new brand is to offer consumers

an authentic, meaningful travel experience where

they’ll have the opportunity to work alongside local

residents of the countries the cruise line will visit to

help improve regional living conditions.

Carnival says that what sets fathom apart from

other volunteer travel opportunities is its unique

business model. By partnering with countries and

successful non-government organizations (NGOs)

and local residents, fathom can provide ongoing

support and development to an area with each

arrival of passengers eager to make a difference.

The company’s first destination will be the

Dominican Republic, a country known for its

spectacular beauty but also a country where the

average household income is approximately $6,000

USD a year and more than two million Dominicans

do not have access to piped water.

Beginning in April 2016, fathom will embark

on seven-day voyages from Miami aboard the MV

Adonia, a 710-passenger vessel redeployed from

Carnival Corporation’s P&O Cruises (UK) for the

start-up of the new operation. Depending on their

passions, interests and skills, travelers will have the

opportunity to choose from a range of social impact

activities and experiences both onboard and onshore.

Travel That Creates Enduring, Transformative Social Impact

“fathom will cater to those who want to have a

positive impact on people’s lives and aren’t always sure

where to begin,” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival

Corporation. “We believe travel is a meaningful way to

allow for personal growth while making purposeful

and engaging contributions to the world. We are

so pleased that fathom will give travelers a unique

opportunity to work alongside local people as part of a

larger scale effort that will demonstrably improve lives.

Both our travelers and the local citizens will learn and

benefit from the opportunity to serve together.”

Donald hired a non-traditional social

entrepreneur to lead this effort. Tara Russell, founder

and chairman of Create Common Good

(www. createcommongood.org), a food

production social enterprise, will serve as

President of fathom and as Global Impact Lead

for Carnival Corporation. Russell established and

led the team that has been working on the design

and business model for fathom since late 2013.

“We created fathom to meet the real hunger

in the world for purpose, while at the same time

tackling profound social issues,” said Russell.

“Travelers will work in partnership with proven,

trusted local organizations on the ground to

amplify their missions for far greater, sustained

impact,” Russell said. “Because fathom will

bring hundreds of travelers to a destination on

a regular basis, fathom can achieve focused and

collaborative contributions in a broad region of

the country—allowing fathom travelers to make

a collective impact they know will extend far

beyond their involvement.”

According to Russell, the fathom team took

an innovative design-thinking approach to

deeply understanding both its travelers, as well

as the needs identified by stakeholders across all

parts of society in the Dominican Republic.

“fathom will educate and equip up to 700

travelers on every trip and tens of thousands of

travelers each year to provide an unprecedented

scale for impact,” said Russell. “fathom has been

built differently, having worked carefully to ensure

the efforts fathom travelers engage with are

authentically impactful, scalable and sustainable.”

According to Russell, fathom hopes to appeal

to people of all ages and from all walks of life, but

especially North American, U.K. and Australian

citizens ages 20 to 60 years old who are eager to

discover their individual gifts and unleash their

personal passions and talents to improve the

world. The company expects to be particularly

popular among Millennials, adults 50+ that want

to help other people apart from writing a check

and parents seeking a way to open their children’s

eyes to other parts of the world in a meaningful

way. In fact, fathom expects approximately half of

travelers to be families.

“During the past 10 years, in countless

conversations I have had with people eager

to serve others and make meaningful societal

contributions, there has been a common

theme—people struggle to know where they

fit in and often people have challenges finding

trusted, easy ways to make a difference,” said

Russell. “fathom exists to address this desire and

to create enduring, life-changing impact, both in

the communities where fathom operates, and in

the lives of the travelers who embark on

one of our journeys.”

Dominican Republic identified as fathom’s first social impact partner destination

The new brand selected the Puerto Plata

region of the Dominican Republic as its

first impact destination based on a number

of factors: genuine needs, infrastructure to

support social initiatives, enthusiasm for

the fathom concept by locals at all layers of

society including country officials, its location

(proximity to Miami and Amber Cove, the

new Dominican destination being launched

by Carnival Corporation in October 2015), its

innate beauty. The fathom team worked closely

with local Dominicans, resident Dominican

business and educational leaders, Dominican

government officials and leading NGOs

operating in the country to fully understand the

societal needs and determine the best way for

fathom to participate in addressing those needs.

fathom has initially identified two lead

impact partners in the Dominican Republic—

Entrena and the Instituto Dominicano

de Desarrollo Integral, Inc. (IDDI). Both

organizations have deep roots in the country,

Page 10: July 2015 Volume 68 Issue 9

10 e x c L u s i v e L Y y o u r s

including long-established programs and strong

social connections in the northern Dominican

region. fathom travelers will work alongside

these organizations across the northern region

to help Entrena and IDDI programs achieve

much greater impact.

A portion of every ticket purchase price

will go directly to fathom partner organizations

to cover on-the-ground activities in the

Dominican Republic, including supplies, travel,

personnel to assist with the activities and

funding to support the partner organizations’

overall missions. This partnership between

fathom and its impact partners allows these

organizations to have predictable revenue

streams to further their missions.

“Having led the Dominican based

non-profit IDDI, for more than 31 years, I

have worked with a very large number of

corporations ranging from energy, sugar,

chocolate and cigar producers, as well as tourism

and free-trade zone companies,” said David

Luther, founder and executive director of IDDI,

a non-profit organization with the mission to

help alleviate poverty in rural and urban areas of

the Dominican Republic. “I have always insisted

on a horizontal relationship based on a win-

win partnership, but on many occasions it has

taken a great deal of convincing on our part for

these to understand the benefits to the private

sector of improving the overall well-being of

Dominican society.

“fathom and Carnival Corporation are

without a doubt the exception. They are

making a strategic bet on contributing to

the development of the Dominican Republic

incorporating this initiative into their business

plan, which is to me a remarkable step for

a corporation of their size. This is not just

Corporate Social Responsibility, but a vision of

bringing people together as a catalyst for change,

be they passengers on a ship or members of

low-income communities—very, very innovative.

In this, fathom and Carnival Corporation are

demonstrating they are willing and capable of

creating experiences that transform lives.”

“Entrena is excited about and committed

to the fathom concept of impact travel for the

north coast of the Dominican Republic,” said

John Seibel, founder and president, Entrena, an

organization specializing in training, education,

and social enterprise. “We believe this concept

will enhance sustainable development efforts

to foster widespread prosperity among these

Dominican communities by improving lives,

creating hope for the future, and providing

profound and meaningful experiences for fathom

and for all Carnival Corporation passengers.”

The fathom experience focuses on education, environment and economic development

The fathom journey is carefully designed

and begins with one to two days at sea

preparing travelers for their on-the-ground

experience. Included are a wide variety of

fun and engaging experiences, ranging from

an orientation to the Dominican Republic,

conversational Spanish lessons, impact

activity training, creative workshops, personal

enrichment and more.

through sustainable practices and—more

importantly—create income opportunities for

rural women. Over time, this activity will allow

the cooperative to increase their workforce so it

can achieve economic independence.

Educational: Work side by side with

Dominican school teachers in classrooms to teach

English skills and to teach small groups of local

community members conversational English.

By helping boost students’ academic

performance and participating in adult-learning

programs helps improve the chances of locals

clay, a natural resource found locally—and

deliver those filters to families throughout the

With limited piped water supply, this will

make a meaningful difference in the quality of

people’s lives throughout the region.

“Together we aim to help communities and

travelers flourish by providing immersive,

on one or more projects suitable for a wide range

AN ExqUISITE GEORGIAN colonial estate,

located on Lake Club Drive, sits like a proper

lady with a graceful gaze upon Oconomowoc

Lake. The home was built in 1965 for Elsa Pabst

Byrnes, granddaughter of Captain Frederick

Pabst—one of Milwaukee’s Beer Barons.

Resting upon 1.4 acres of real estate, with

more than 200 feet of shoreline, this is one

of the most desirable properties in the Lake

Country. And, in recent years, the estate has

been meticulously restored and renovated by

the current homeowner, Marie Kasten.

The draw of this property is not only the

spaciousness of this well-appointed, luxury

estate, but the lake views that never get old.

Recent additions to the lakeside of the home add

to its grandeur and capitalize on its stunning

vistas, whether standing on the dock or resting in

a comfortable chair in the quaint screened porch.

Upon entering this home, each guest is

welcomed in the large foyer with black and white

marble flooring direct from Carrara, Italy, and

an elegant, curved staircase which leads to the

second floor. Both features are original to the

home and provide the ideal backdrop for the

family Christmas tree, bedecked with treasured

ornaments and sparkling brilliance.

“It was always my goal to preserve as much

of the original home as possible,” said Marie,

whose additions to the home expanded the

capacity to host up to 250 people comfortably,

whether outdoors or indoors.

Stepping into the expansive, formal dining

room evokes a feeling of being transported to

another era. Three beautiful chandeliers—one

made of Swarovski and two of Waterford

crystals—set the tone for dinner parties amid

opulent finishing touches.

The adjacent formal living room provides

ease of entertaining for special family

celebrations and holiday gatherings. This room

features a unique, herringbone oak floor, which

is one of many high-quality design elements

found in the home.

Each room includes a fireplace and, with 11

featured throughout the main house, one senses

the cozy, comfortable ambience that permeates

the home.

Great stories have been told of famous guests,

like Frank Sinatra, enjoying a drink at the bar in

the home’s family room and quietly chatting in

the den with Pabst family members and friends.

Natural light pours into a sizable sunroom

off of the main floor and a cheerful dining area.

Marie admits that her inspiration for both the

design of the space and the décor are reminiscent

of grand waterfront homes found in either Lake

Geneva or Newport, Rhode Island.

The sunroom leads to the screen porch,

which happens to be one of the homeowner’s

favorite places to enjoy morning coffee and a

good book. “Kids like to camp in the screen

porch,” she said, especially since the space has

a cool ‘treehouse effect’ that provides a great

perch amid views of lush, green trees and the

beautiful lake.

Page 20: July 2015 Volume 68 Issue 9

20 e x c L u s i v e L Y y o u r s

“Because the lakeside faces east, we have

the sun all day,” said Marie. And, according to

avid fishermen in the area, she can boast the

best fishing spot on the lake just 20' out beyond

her docked boats.

A large, airy kitchen is a dream for anyone

who loves to cook, like Marie, who is known to

donate dinner parties for 10 to various charity

auctions in the area. Every gathering ultimately

ends in the kitchen, where guests enjoy bananas

foster while gathered at the breakfast bar topped

in blue, South American quartz. A Brazilian

sandstone kitchen countertop in subtle hues,

resembles a wave pattern, and complements the

quartz. Also, a large gas Viking cooktop, Wolf

wall ovens and Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, and

three sinks make this a great, well-equipped

kitchen for entertaining.

An elevator is a unique amenity in a lake

property, but it is available to deliver residents

and guests to all four levels of this home of

more than 13,000 square feet.

Each lakeside room on the main floor

has access to two-tiered balconies overlooking

Oconomowoc Lake. On the second floor, the

homeowners revel in a waterfront sunrise from

the master bedroom suite and the luxury of

Italian marble in the en suite spa bath.

A stately library, with rich oak paneling and

built-in bookshelves, and game room, bridge

five more bedrooms on the second level. The

library, equipped with surround sound, also

doubles as a home theatre.

Add five bathrooms here as well—each

one unique with wildlife murals painted by

celebrated Wisconsin artists Betsy Peckenpaugh,

Wallis Coffman, and Lee Foss O’Daniels. On

the home’s third floor, there are two more

bedrooms, two more bathrooms, living quarters

and storage space. This layout is ideal for visiting

families with young children or could be used

as an in-law suite.

“With 49 rooms on four floors, this is a

great house for games of hide-and-go-seek,”

said Marie. In the summer months, her home

is a destination for many family members

and friends. The record number of overnight

guests: 54.

Overlooking the 18th fairway on the prestigious The Legend Brandybrook Golf Course, sits this stunning 4-bedroom, 3.5-bath, brick Ranch that was designed with entertaining and family fun in mind.

The chef ’s kitchen features professional-grade Viking appliances, a cooktop flanked by double ovens, wine refrigerator, custom cherry cabinetry and Australian granite countertops. Several unique features of this property

include an apartment-style coach house on

the estate and a boathouse. On the lower level

of the main residence, there is a French-style

ice cream parlor, sauna, and his-and-hers

changing rooms.

One of the many facets luring residents

to this community is its location midpoint

between Milwaukee and Madison and easy

access to the I-94 corridor. Living in the Village

of Oconomowoc Lake is ideal and combines

the best of small-town living with proximity

to work and entertainment offerings in larger

metropolitan areas.

An excellent home for entertaining guests

and hosting events, the Oconomowoc Lake

provides so many opportunities—from boating,

fishing, swimming and tubing during the

summer to skating, ice fishing, and cross-

country skiing in the winter.

The residents on Oconomowoc Lake also

enjoy amenities beyond the borders of their

respective properties. Located on the lake

22 e x c L u s i v e L Y y o u r s

proper is the historic Oconomowoc Lake

Club. Founded in 1890, the club has a rich

history of providing social opportunities

to connect both residents and visitors of

Oconomowoc Lake. Annual memberships are

available for both individuals and families,

whether or not they live on the lake. The

club features tennis, sailing, boating, gourmet

dining, social events and private parties

for members and their guests.

Dockside dining is an impromptu option

for a family frolicking on the lake. Instead of

taking the time to prepare dinner for a tired and

sun-drenched group, invite everyone onto the

pontoon and head to the club. Once dockside,

order off the menu and waitstaff will serve your

meal right on the boat.

Spending a summer on Oconomowoc

Lake is a lovely prospect and a time to create

lasting memories for the entire family. The

club invites children of members to take

tennis lessons or bike over to buy a smoothie

on the hottest days of summer. A welcoming

environment, kids on the lake thrive in a

small, safe community where everyone knows

each other. Fourth of July fireworks and

parties where residents tie their pontoon boats

together on the lake continue to bring people

together and strengthen the sense

of community.

Whether enjoying water sports or riding

bikes, a fun end to a busy summer day should

include dinner at The Kiltie Drive-In. A visit to

a retro ‘50s drive-in restaurant, complete with

teenage carhops, includes the classic American

hamburger, fries and milkshake. It’s a bit of

nostalgia that reminds us of simpler times and

endless summer days on Oconomowoc Lake.

This executive estate is a jewel of Lake

Country and its location provides opportunities

to create lasting memories for every member of

the family.

Marie takes great pride in a comment she

has heard from her many guests over the years

and that is: for a mansion, this is a family-

friendly, happy home.

“A couple of nights during the summer

when, if there are no clouds, and a full, orange

moon, the lake looks like diamonds. When that

happens, that is a magic night,” said Marie.

Things we love…“Warm cozy booths, comfortable clothes,

yummy food, lively conversations, perfect service and friendly prices.”

God’scornerby Ger t rude m . Pue l icher

ISAIAH, INSPIRED PATRIARCH and prophet

of the Old Testament, threw us a lifeline

when he said, “Behold the Lord’s hand is not

shortened, that it cannot save; neither his

ear heavy, that it cannot hear.” A lifeline is

important only if one grabs it and holds it

fast, whether it is from a national or individual

standpoint, and it would seem that a lifeline

is what we need in today’s world.

The problem is how does one connect

with the lifeline? In other words, how does

one reach this God whose help we obviously

need? If your kitchen stove has a pilot light,

you don’t need a match to produce a flame.

All you do is turn on the gas. It contacts the

pilot light, and the burner is instantaneously

flooded with a blue flame. It’s as simple as

that. Contact is the key word.

Within each of us is a pilot light, a divine

spark that is never extinguished. We may

be totally unaware of its presence, we may

completely ignore it, but, nevertheless, it is

present within us, waiting patiently to be

contacted. The instant, however, that we make

the connection, we are flooded with warmth

of love, an assurance of the presence of a

Power greater than man. We have caught the

lifeline and all we need do is hang on to it.

There has never been a time in our

country when we have had greater need

to contact God. Sometimes one wonders

whether our image hasn’t become one of a

crime dominated, drug addicted, sex obsessed

country. It is an appalling thought. What has

happened to “America, The Beautiful?” “The

land of the free and the home of the brave?”

“This is my country” with the emphasis on

the my? “The Stars and Stripes forever?”

What has happened to the American

home, that bulwark of security for little and

big children? What has happened to family

togetherness, a warm circle of affection that

holds parents and their children close?

What is happening to the importance of

marriage vows?

Doesn’t it seem to you that there is

great need of our making contact with that

divine spark within each of us? Does it

seem possible that anyone could be content

with mere humanhood? One would think

that soulnessness could be a very lonely

existence. Are we blind to the truth that

youth, despite its flamboyance, needs

love and security and faith in something?

Patriotism has become old-fashioned.

Family life has become disintegrated.

Morals are a matter of individual opinion.

Our last resource, which ironically enough

should be our first, is the divine spark

within us.

Must we not, before it is too late, turn to

the Father within in gratitude that his hand

is not shortened that it cannot save nor his

ear heavy that it cannot hear? Do we have

any other option? Why are we waiting?

The time to make the contact is now.

Rejoice, because fruitage from that contact

with the Spirit within can only result in a

great welling up of gratitude for the peace,

harmony and love that are flooding us.
