Tethered Freedom

The first weekend of this month, our nation will once again celebrate Independence Day. It is a very popular holiday,

hopefully for more reasons than just the fireworks and family picnics. On July 4th, we celebrate our nation's independ-

ence from the tyranny and oppression of the British Empire. This independence is something we cherish because no one

desires to be under the control or rule of anyone else. As Americans, we never want to be under the control of anyone

ever again -- whether it be another nation or the forces of terrorism. We cherish the freedoms we enjoy in his country.

One man tells of flying a kite with his son in southern Florida during some windy weather. “The wind was strong, and

the kite grew smaller and smaller as it tugged against the string. The harder it blew, the higher it rose. Then there was a

sickening snap! The string had broken. The kite was free, but it was no longer soaring higher. It was tumbling, falling

crazily to dash itself against the ground or become tangled in the trees. What kept the kite airborne was the restraint of

the string. When that was lost, the kite was unable to fly. We are never freed until we are restrained by something that

pulls us higher and higher. It is not the absence of restraints that makes us free.”

It is easy to think of freedom as being unbound. Set loose from parents’ rules. Let out of school for the summer. Re-

leased from restrictive laws. But think again. If we’re not bound – relationally, legally, spiritually – then we’re on our

own. And on our own we will find a way to tumble and fall down to the ground like an untethered kite.

With the apostle Paul we say, “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (Philippians

3:12). The call of our God that brings us to faith and gives us unlimited life through the death of Christ Jesus holds us.

Frees us.

We are free to soar above mediocrity when we hold on to the gifts God has given us. We are able to soar above sinful

habits when we hold on to the Spirit’s power in us through baptism and the Word.

That gives a new – free – meaning to being tied “up.”

FROM OUR EARLY LEARNING CENTER

Enrollment for 2016-2017 School Year/Adopt-A-Student We are very excited about the enrollment for next year. The numbers are better than they have been at this time for a couple years. We hope that they continue to grow over the summer and we can start the year with more students than we have had for a few years. Parents in Longmont have many choices when it comes to finding a preschool for their child. All of the public schools, charter schools, and private schools in Long-

mont have preschools. There are also a variety of private preschools as well as preschool programs through the YMCA and City of Longmont. Parents that choose to bring their children to Messiah Early Learning Center are doing so because they feel that Christian education is a priority for their family. For many families in Longmont, preschool can be a financial hardship for their family. All public schools, YMCA and city classes receive government funding which allows families to attend their schools with little to no cost to the family. As we attempt to grow and stay competitive with the other preschools in Longmont, we need to provide financial assis-tance to those families that need it and yet see the benefit of a Christian education for their children. It also makes it available to those that might choose to send their children to Messiah because it is close enough for them to walk, they live in the neighborhood, and they might like the smaller classes or music program; this opens the door for us to share the love of Jesus with more and more families in Longmont. Over the past couple years we have not had many requests for scholarships. However, this year we already know of several families that will need financial assistance in order to have their children attend Messiah. For us to continue to be able to offer scholarships to the preschool families, we would like to start up the Adopt-A-Student fund once again. If you would like to donate to this fund, please place a check or cash in the offering and clearly label it Adopt-A-Student. Thank you for your generous support of Messiah Early Learning Center and helping us to welcome all families in Longmont to come hear the message of God’s Love.

Grandfriends Wanted

We are looking for church members that would be interested in spending time with the preschool children this year. The teachers feel that our preschoolers could benefit from the love and attention of our members here at Messiah. In August, we will have a sign up sheet available for anyone interested in being a pretend grandparent or mentor to one of the children in the Early Learning Center. As a grandfriend, you would be invited to join the school families on special days such as Grandparents Day, Thanksgiving Feast and Christmas Program. There will also be about three times during the school year where we will invite our grandfriends to come spend time with their preschool friend. We also ask that you pray for your grandfriend and their family throughout the year. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Kirsten Danile, Dora Busch, Donna Aigner or Paula Meyer.

Summer Happenings

On Wednesday June 15 the preschool families gathered on the playground to share a time of fun and fellowship. We also harvested radishes and lettuce from the garden the children planted this spring. The children were able to taste what they had been a part of growing! They also planted a few more seeds to have things ready to harvest when they come to school in August. Our next play date is Friday July 22 at 10AM. We hope to have more yummy things for the children to harvest and taste at that time as well.

Mrs. Busch and Mrs. Danile are hard at work this summer getting ready for the new school year. If you have any questions for us, or know of families that are still looking for a preschool for the fall, please do not hesitate to contact us Monday – Friday from 8am-1pm. We offer a wonder-ful class for children that are not quite ready for kindergarten. If you hear of someone that is not sure if their child is ready to start kindergarten in the fall, please tell them to contact us!

Watch the newsletter next month for details on an MELC open house in August. We have found that many of our members have not been in our preschool classrooms recently and some have never seen inside them! Following a worship service in August we will offer refreshments and a time to visit the classrooms when they are all set up for the new school year. It will also give you a chance to talk with the teachers about their plans for the upcoming school year.

“Lessons Learned Through Jonah”

This year’s Messiah Music Camp focused on learning a musical called “The Story of Jo-nah”. I, like many of you, are very familiar with the story of Jonah. But I can honestly say that even though I thought I knew a lot about this story from the Bible, I still learned some new things from this story during Music Camp! For example, in different transla-tions of the Bible, the animal that swallowed up Jonah was not specifically a whale, but a

fish! See the translations below of Jonah 1:17:

17 Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. (New International Version)

17 And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. (English Standard Version) I also had never given much thought to the idea of Jonah being in the belly of a giant fish (3 days/ 3 nights – Jonah 1:17) as the same time (3 days/3 nights – Luke 24:7) Jesus’ body was in the tomb. An-other similarity between Jesus and Jonah was the casting of lots. The sailors cast lots to see who would be thrown overboard- which led to Jonah being hurled into the sea (Jonah 1:15). The soldiers cast lots to divide up Jesus’ clothing (John 19:24). I was also reminded of the significance of the number 40 through the story of Jonah, Noah, and Jesus. Jonah warned the Ninevites that God would overturn Nineveh in 40 days if they did not repent. Noah and his family were on the boat while it rained for 40 days and 40 nights (Gen. 7:4). Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after His resurrection. I am thankful God continues to guide me to grow and learn His word each day. Music Camp is just one example of God’s word shining in my life as He opens my heart to hear His Word. May you be reminded of God’s almighty power to strengthen our faith as He keeps us steadfast to His Word.

WATOTO CHILDREN’S CHOIR – CONCERT AT MESSIAH - JUNE 11, 2016

What a terrific evening for all who came to hear the Watoto Children’s Choir! God

is truly at work among this choir as they travel around the USA (and world!) We

are thankful to have had them at Messiah on Saturday, June 11. Thank You also to

the host families who opened their homes to host choir members. You are a

blessing! Through the offerings collected during VBS and a concert love offering,

Messiah was able to give an amount of $2,069.59 to support Watoto! Wow! DVD

copies are available of this fantastic evening concert. Please sign up at the Friendship Center by July 3.

MUSIC CAMP SUCCESS!

We had a great week at Music Camp this year with about 40 participants this

year! The children worked very diligently in learning lines and songs for the musical

"The Story of Jonah". We also had a great group of volunteers who made Music

Camp run smoothly, which allowed Music Camp to be a wonderful experience for

the children. Messiah Music Camp was June 20 – June 24. A big Thank You to

Messiah for all your support and dedication to the Music Ministry!

DVD COPIES OF MUSICAL "THE STORY OF JONAH"

If you would like a DVD copy of the Messiah Music Camp musical on June 24, please sign up at the

Friendship Center in the narthex by July 10.

SUBSTITUTE MUSICIANS

There are a few services in July where I will not be serving at Mes-

the National Youth Gathering on Sunday, July 17. Brian Heins, a

former Praise Team leader, will be leading the Praise Team that

day. The Sunday following (July 24), I will be camping with fam-

ily in the western mountains of Wyoming! (Hopefully no bears

find me!) Jonathan Hodel will be filling in for the traditional

service. For the Wednesdays of those weeks (July 13 and 20), Lanelle Krueger will

be playing piano for the evening services. Thank you Brian, Jonathan, and Lanelle!

NIGHT OF MUSIC ON THE LAWN – SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 The Praise Team will be leading

an evening of music on the lawn at Messiah the evening of Saturday, August 13. We are looking to include the

many talented musicians of Messiah. Look for more details in the near future as we prepare for this great event!

FROM EDUCATION MINISTRY

Education Ministry — A 5-Day Devotional

A Report on Cave Quest — Messiah’s 2016 VBS Following Jesus the Light of the World

From June 6th to 10th Messiah’s Sanctuary was a Dark Cavern in a dark world but was filled daily with over 120 hearts sharing Jesus the Light of the Word! From 9:00 AM to Noon daily 80 children (88 differ-ent attendees) of our Community (23 Messiah Children) were instructed by 44 volunteers (nearly half were Messiah Middle and High School Students) with the Holy Spirit in the Word, aided by songs of praise, Bible stories, videos, testimonies of God’s Love and presents, games, crafts and nutritional treats of God’s blessings. The offerings given at the Worship Openings for the week totaled $264.59 which were offered up to the Lord’s earthly mission of the Watoto ministries in Kampala, Uganda.

On Thursday evening congregants, VBS donors, and parents were entertained by the children and VBS volunteers and then treated to a Hot Dog and Pot Luck Dinner. Those are the facts and numbers of the Who What When and Where … but NOW it is time for YOU to share in Vacation Bible School with your own VBS 5-day devotional! This article will share the Theme of each Day, the Bible Story of the Day and the Bible Passage of the Day…but you must use YOUR Bible and heart to see the Connection and Jesus’ Message. Monday- Jesus gives us Hope. Sal the amphibian salamander goes through life changes. With the mes-sage of the prophets and John the Baptist our lives change. What is the message found in Isaiah 9:2 and John 1:1-18? The Key Verse of the Day is Psalms 71:5. Tuesday- Jesus gives us Courage. Mawtha the Moth goes through a metamorphose. Peter, a Bible hero time again, goes from weak to bold, to humble and then glorious service. What is the message found in Matthew 14:22-36? The Key Verse of the Day is Matthew 14:27. Wednesday- Jesus gives us Direction. Radar the Bat uniquely avoids obstacles. The Sermon on the Mount is well known but Jesus’ message is often lost with people. Read Matthew chapters 5-7. The message is pretty simple but it is a lesson hard to follow. The Key Verse of the Day is Proverbs 3:6. Thursday- always the key day of VBS week. Jesus gives us Love. Olivia –Barn (heart-faced) Owls love their spouses for life. With the message: how far was Jesus willing to go me… for us out of love? Luke 23:1 through 24:12. The Key Verse of the Day is John 3:16. Friday- Jesus gives us His Power. Ray, a tiny Blow Worm in the darkest vast environment is a beacon of strength and focus. Jesus physically left this world … but we are not left alone Acts 1-11 and 2:4. The Key Verse of the Day is 2 Corinthians 4:7.

IT’S HERE! We can’t believe it, but July is already here! We have spent the last year planning, FUNdraising, bonding, and growing in God’s word. Now we are making our last minute trip preparations for our time in New Orleans at the National Youth Gathering. We are so excited to attend the Gathering as it will provide opportunity to connect with thousands of youth and adults as a com-munity of God’s people to learn more about Jesus Christ, the Christian faith, and our Lutheran iden- tity. During our time at the Gathering, we will spend time together in

God’s word, worship, service, and fellowship with others from across the synod. The LCMS Youth Gatherings have been offered for over 30 years, and they provide opportunities for youth and adults to boldly come to-gether in the name of Jesus Christ to proclaim, celebrate and witness salvation through Him, rejoice in fellowship of their Church and be en-couraged and nurtured in their lives as God’s people through Word and Sacrament. In this setting, youth grow in their personal relation-ship with God and in fellowship with one another. Thank you again to all of you for your generosity and support of our youth group over the last year in our fundraising efforts. We also thank you for your prayers! Please continue to pray for us as we embark on our final preparation stages of our trip and during the trip itself.

MESSIAH WOMEN IN MISSION

Keep those mites coming in!

The MWM ladies thank everyone who contributes to the mite box in the narthex the first Sunday of the month. Every penny counts to support numerous domestic and international Gospel ministry! Seventy-five percent is retained by the District LWML for the 2016-2018 biennium and 25% goes toward the National LWML’s 2015-2017 mission goal of $2,000,000, for which $1,147,701.21 had been received as of May 31st.

Do you have garden flowers you can share?

If you have an abundance of flowers in your yard and garden that you would like to arrange and pro-vide on the altar this summer, please contact Linda Melsheimer for the month of July. Vases are avail-able in the sacristy for you to borrow. The Anna Circle functions as our Messiah altar guild to look after such things and we appreciate all they do for us. And don't forget to sign up on your chosen Sunday at the Flower Chart on the bulletin board in the narthex.

Support Needed for MWM Quilt Ministry

MWM women meet in the Fellowship Hall the second Wednesday of the month from 9 – 11 a.m. to tie quilts for which blocks are cut, assem-bled into a pattern, and sewn together in members’ homes. A minimum of three ladies are needed to set up the quilt frame for the work to begin and sometimes it’s in question if three will be arriving to do that. Can you help? The group welcomes more participants! If you are attending the Wednesday morning Bible Study, why not come early and see how it’s done? Con-tact Marilyn Rodenbeck or Sondra Hudson for more in-formation. The group over the years has sewn together and then tied hundreds of double-size and baby quilts for people in need. Currently they are dis-tributed worldwide through Orphan Grain Train.

A word about the “Visiting Nurse”

Messiah members may have noticed the Visiting Nurse entry on the monthly calendar. What’s that all about? From 3-4 nurses from the Colorado Visiting Nurse Association are here from 9—1 p.m. the fourth Monday of the month to conduct a medical foot care clinic, which is open to the public. Blood pressure and sensory perception of the feet are checked and medications can be reviewed. Chronic illnesses can be discussed but not treated. Appointments can be made by calling 303-698-6496. Kasier members are served free of charge (provide ID number when calling). Others pay $45 for the initial visit and $35 per visit thereafter, payable at time of ser-vice. Sorry—no pedicures!

1) Our refugee office in Colorado Springs is receiving lots of single moms with young children, so we are asking for gently used or new strollers to help the mothers get around town. Bicycles are also needed for our work readiness program and pots and pans for our housing assistance program. Please contact Laura [email protected] or at 719.572.7397.

2) Our annual Backpack Drive is underway! We are collecting new backpacks and school supplies for our foster and refugee children for this next school year. All items are due by the week of July 25th (pick-ups can be arranged). Contact Blythe at [email protected] for a supply list and more info.

3) Every day there are children in need of a safe environment in Colorado and we need more people to commit to these children! Informational meetings for foster care in the Denver Metro area are on July 13th from 12:30-1:30pm and from 5:30-6:30pm at the LFS office: 363 S. Harlan Street, Suite 105, Denver, 80226. We hope to see you! Please contact Anne Hamilton for more information 303-217-5869.

4) The Older Adult and Caregiver Services program at LFS will be hosting part one of our three-part series on Aging in Place on July 13th at 12:00PM. Aging in Place is a rapidly growing lifestyle option for Americans approaching or beyond retirement age. It facilitates remaining in the home of your choice for as long as you would like as opposed to relocating to a nursing home or other medical facility. In this three part series, learn how to plan for a safe and secure lifestyle in your home. Please visit us online at http://www.lfsrm.org/caregiver-services or call 303-217-5864 or 970-232-1180 for more informa-tion.

5) Lutheran Family Services is always in need of more diapers for our refugee families! Specifically, we are most in need of non-infant sized diapers, including pull-ups. If you or your church is interested in collecting diapers, please contact [email protected] for more information.

NEWS FROM PROPERTY MINISTRY

Thank You—Clean Up Day A great big THANK YOU to Dick Stefanski, Ed Maycumber, Carol Parker, Beverly

Keele, Joan VanderMolen, Todd, Asa and Savannah Wright for working so hard dur-ing cleanup day on Saturday, June 18th. We wiped down and restocked all the

pews, cleaned the altar and sanctuary windows, straightened up the Luther Room and narthex, trimmed the lower branches on the pine trees and cleaned out the out-

side storage area. Thank you to each of you for serving God and the congregation in this small but important way.

Can You Help? The Church and Early Learning Center property is in need of a lot of TLC. It is the goal of the property team to make the church and ELC more inviting and user friendly. If you have a few hours or a few days to spare, please contact the church office or Dawn Wright at [email protected] or (303) 678-9183. We can provide you with a list of projects that need to be complete.

Unsung Heroes of Messiah We are so blessed to have several members and staff that jump in to help with many tasks that need to be done around Messiah.

Thank you to Ed and Joni Maycumber for all your hard work and dedication to the children of Messiah and all of those who attended Cave Quest Vacation Bible School (VBS) here at Messiah. You both put in countless hours ensuring everything was ready and in place for an amazing week. Each and every child who attended VBS walked away with a the message Jesus loves and so does Messiah. Thank you!

Thank you to each to all of the 44 Cave Quest VBS volunteers. VBS would not have happened without each of you. The decorations were amazing; opening and closing were inspirational; snack were yummy; crafts and games were a blast; the cinema time and Bible stories were fun and educational and the hot dog dinner was enjoyed by all. Every single volunteer, no matter how much or little time you volunteered, made an impact on the children. What an awesome outreach ministry this is to the Longmont community. Thank you for sharing Jesus with all of the children big and small!

Thank you to Audrey Herrmann and all of the volunteers for the 2016 Messiah Music Camp. All of the children had a blast learning and growing in Christ with music as the theme. This is another successful ministry outreach to the children of Longmont teaching the love of Christ. Thank you for all of your hard work and effort.

These are only a few people we need to thank God for sending them to be of service to Him and Mes-siah. Each one of these people are so humble and Messiah’s unsung heroes. Please take a moment to thank these wonderful people for all of their dedication and efforts.

If you are interested in being a part of this team or aware other projects, please contact Dawn Wright at (303) 678-9183 or [email protected]. In His Service, Dawn Wright
