WICHITA A’S MEETING MINUTES Minisa Park, June 26, 2017

Summer has arrived and is it hot, but never too hot to get the A’s out and enjoy a beautiful summer evening!!! I had a great time riding in Biking Across Kansas this past month, this year we started at the Colorado Boarder west of Tribune and 522 miles later we dipped our tires in the Missouri River at Leavenworth. There are between 800 and 850 riders from all over the world and all walks of life that come to Kansas each year to complete this ride and experience some of the interest-ing things that our great state has to offer. We saw a lot of interesting things and I particularly enjoyed getting to ride through Fort Riley. Riders that applied for a security clearance had the opportunity to ride through Fort Riley, see many of the histor-ic military sights on the base and tour the Calvary Museum. I love the challenge this ride provides, but I also reminds me of touring in Model A’s. Here are the top 10 similarities:

1. Great people that share a common interest 2. Eat great food 3. We are not in a hurry and take time to smell the roses and see the sights. 4. Eat great food 5. It’s hot in the afternoon and it is so nice to get the destination and cool down 6. Eat great food 7. Flat tires and mechanical problems 8. Eat great food 9. People are interested in what we are doing and love to visit when we stop for a break

10. Eat Great food On two wheels or four, I hope to see you out on the road soon Best Regards, Randy Frazer, President

PAST TOUR

Gypsy Horse and Kansas City Tour

Thursday, June 22nd, thirty club members in eleven Model A’s and four modern cars left for Kansas City, KS for a three-day tour. After eating lunch in Ottawa, KS., a reporter from the Ottawa Herald newspaper caught up with us and took plenty of pictures of us and our cars plus interviewed Jim Broadhead and Linda Kibbe. Saturday, when we returned to Ottawa, KS, we bought all the newspapers at the convenience store which included pictures and an article about us. Friday, we visited the Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. At the River Market we ate lunch and did a lit-tle shopping. Then we enjoyed a guided tour of the Arabia Steamboat Museum. Saturday, we left early to be at the Flynt Hylls Gypsy Horse farm by 9:00 AM. Gilbert and Joanna Adams joined us for the tour. Tracie Helgert, Gypsy Horse owner, talked to us about the Gypsy horse heritage and her daughter gave us a demonstration on the horses jumping skills and playing games while riding. After the demonstra-tion at the ranch in Ottawa, we had lunch at the Saddle Rock Café in Council Grove, KS.

All Wheels Car Show

All Wheels Car Show was celebrated at Lake Afton on June 11th. Approximately 10-12 Model A’s showed up. Jim Clark provided the lunch for everyone.

4th July Parade and Picnic

It was good weather, lots of spectators, and a good turn out of Model "A"s. Other than a short wait for our food it was a good day to remember. Thanks to all that celebrated the 4th with us. Sharps and Hilemans

Linda, My name is Steve White. I am a new member to the club this year and I had planned to go to the Omaha Regional Meet but was not able to make it work out. There is a new Model A Ford forum on the web, it is called the Vintage Ford Forum, https://www.vintagefordforum.com/ . I know the administrator and I got him to put in a section on this forum on meets and tours. I mention this for two reasons one it is a great forum and the administrator is very Model A friendly. Take a look and let our members know. The second reason is to tell you about a tour in September called the Gamarri tour, it is a driving tour and I am going. If you go to the Vintage Ford Forum and look under the “Swap Meets and Tours” section of the forum you will see the link, http://www.centraliowamodelaclub.com/ and info for this tour, just thought some of our mem-bers might be interested. I post on the Vintage Ford Forum under the name “bnchief” take a look if you please and let me know what you think. You do a fantastic job hope to meet many of you sometime and I am going to the Iowa Tour. Thanks. Steve White

From the La Crosse Republican newspaper in 1917 and reprinted in the Rush County News “100 Years Ago” section on July 12,2017. Things haven’t changed. ‘If we owned a car probably we would do the same thing, yet it’s dangerous, foolish and unlawful. We refer to the semi-maniacs who drive over our city streets as though an imp of Satan was about to harpoon them with a pitch fork. We know the country is at war but there is no use being in such a hurry when you are autoing within the city limits.”

This is an old photo of Bud Valerius and Jack Hileman (Gary Hileman’s father) with Jack’s A-400. The A-400 was in the lobby of the Seth Childs Movie Theater for the first showing of the movie “L A Confidential” in Manhattan, KS. Todd Williams ,from Topeka, KS., is the present owner of the A-400.

Richard Kibbe knows how to drive a Model A across town, to a club meet-ing, without spilling his tools.

TOOL KIT JACKS LATE 29 TO EARLY 30 Revision 4 to the Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards (RG&JS) has been released. Major revisions to a lot of sec-tions is included but one that caught my interest was Area 17 Tools. Having collecting tools along with my brother for several years. One thing that always confused me was the late 29/early 30 ratchet jacks. The RG&JS has always said that both Ajax and Walker were manufacturers but only showed pictures of the Ajax. A few years ago I contacted the “experts” and requested a picture of the Walker jack but got no response. The RG&JS state “The Ajax jack had a reinforcing rib on each side and one on the edge opposite the handle next to the base”. No mention of what the Walker looked like. The MAFCA website only shows the Ajax jack. Below is a picture of the 2 Ajax jacks showing the rib (bump) on the side opposite the handle.

Below is a picture showing a pair of Walker jacks without said rib configuration but are the same height as described in the RG&JS.

In both cases, the taller jack is the late 29 and short one is the early 30. This is my story and I’m sticking to it.—John Stone

List of Benefits The Model “A” Restorers Club (MARC), founded in 1952, holds as its aims the encouragement of members to acquire, restore, preserve and exhibit the Model “A” Ford. And most importantly, to enjoy the fellowship of other Model “A” Ford owners around the world. The annual Membership Meeting, held each spring, and the National Meet, held during the summer, are both fine opportunities to meet fellow members from around the world. These meetings also provide a time to photograph, study body styles, exchange ideas, ask questions, as well as buy, sell or trade parts. Here, “A’ers” also learn where qual-ity parts can be found for the best price from members or professional suppliers. The Model “A” Restorers Club is comprised of local regions. There may already be a region formed in your area. If not, you as a MARC member are eligible to start one. In-formation for the formation of a new region or your nearest region may be obtained from MARC.

The idea for this Dixie Tie-about came from on of the Companion’s Southern readers, Mrs. T. S. Har-ris of Macon, Georgia. “So pleased was I with this combination apron-dress,” Mrs. Harris wrote, “that I made several for friends and relatives and in each case they repeated the model again and again. My friends liked the fact that it was simple to cut out, that the edg-es were all abound with bias tape (even the bottom) and that the ties at the waist made over-the-head ma-neuvers unnecessary. The wrap-around effect also means that the dress is easy to iron and that it may be worn either as a dress or as an apron over the dress.” This quotation from Mrs. Harris letter sums up most6 of the good points about this apron-frock. There are others, however. One is the style you find in molded lines and a subtly full skirt. Anoth-er is the minimum of cash required from start to finish. Mrs. Harris actually made her first apron-frock for ninety-one cents—seventy-six cents for four yards of printed cot-ton, ten cents for tape, five cents for thread. The pattern comes in sizes 34 to 46.
