Saint Matthew’s Shelter Monthly Report

I recently read an article in an old edition of Reader’s Digest of a father who taught all his children how to bunt a baseball. Although some of the children were more interested and had better technique than others, this particular child (a daughter) learned much more from her bunting lessons than just how to choke the bat.

For years, she was curious why her father felt it was important to teach this batting technique – why not swing for the fences? The purpose of the sacrifice bunt is to move a runner into scoring position. It is often used in late innings and critical situations. However, her father (in his own way) was teach-ing the larger life lesson of how we often do not hit the home runs in life, but many times we help oth-ers get to the next base.

It reminds me of the critical work we do to help our men advance to the next base of life. For some, we help them find employment and housing, others discover St. Matthew’s Shelter to be a respite from habits and addictions that haunt them while others are able to reconnect with family and friends to begin stabilizing their future.

Although hitting home runs is exciting and energizes the crowd, there is great satisfaction in helping someone else advance to the next base in the game of life. Thank you for all you do to support the shelter.

Whew! Summer is truly upon us! If I were younger and could still wear a bikini instead of a muumuu, I

would want to be at the pool everyday! Apologies for the girls missing worship participation Fathers' Day. As you are aware we had a few family emergencies. Our condolences to Diane Justice in the death of her mother. Our prayers are for a quick recovery for Debra Noblitt. So now you can be surprised when we have all our voices praising God on a coming Sunday. As we celebrate July 4th with parties, family gatherings, and the all important "fireworks,” let us remember the freedoms we enjoy and sometimes take for granted. May we celebrate diversities and commonalities as well. Pray for peace, our friends, neighbors and our enemies! Yes, that's someplace in the Bible. Okay, I am off the soapbox. Have a safe holiday.

Love in Christ,

Linda May

News Brief from the Session, June 11, 2017

Worship committee will continue the portrayal of “Tongues” (many languages) during

future years Pentecost worship Sundays. Education Committee plans to save the $1651 donated to honor Interim Pastor

Diane Stocker for use as camp scholarships next year as no campers needed money this year.

Fellowship will be planning programming for Wonderful Wednesdays. Any sugges-

tions may be given to Betty Whitaker or Sandy Lowery. Kudos to Agnes Andruk for volunteering her cooking services to prepare meals for 4

weeks during June and July this summer for the men of St. Matthews. Additional volunteers for a one-time meal preparation may contact Betty Whitaker.

Building and grounds has had the vestibule flat roof repaired and the squeaky floor

by the pulpit stabilized. Scholarship Sunday will be held in early August for those high school graduates and

continuing college students. Session approved changing Claire Broome’s position to full-time salaried from full-

time hourly. She will also be responsible for maintaining hourly employee time cards.

Session approved motion from Personnel committee to hire Larry Cooley as security

sexton. Our routine expenses continue to be less than budgeted for.

Session to review policy regarding weddings here at Second Presbyterian.

Please note that there will be no scheduled Session meeting for July.

(Since January of 2015 Session has had 29 scheduled meetings, 7 called session meetings, 4 e-mail meetings for voting, and 9 called Congregational meetings. It has been a busy 2 and ½ years.)
